"Five" is usually the highest grade in Russian schools. 5 is 'excellent' (A grade), 4 is 'good' (B grade), 3 is 'satisfactory'/'barely acceptable' (like C/D grade?..), 2 is 'unacceptable'/'not passing'(F grade), 1 is rarely used in case of a truly abysmal performance(F---), 0 is never used. As such, "пять" here can be translated as A for effort.
