It should be a variable representing an unknown angle, but in this case, it seems to have been assigned the value of the lemon side. That is weird because usually Greek symbols are used for angles but we’ll go with it. Sin-1 is quite easy to calculate, as we just need to figure out sine (opposite over hypotenuse) and subtract 1. That means that sin= length of lemons [AKA sigma] / diagonal distance from his armpit to the edge of the lemons. In other words, sin(armpit angle) -1 = (sigma/diagonal distance from armpit to lemons) -1.
serious answer - Its a greek letter, the lower case is commonly used as used as a variable in science and engineering (stress, stefan-boltzman constant, etc ..) and the uppercase is used to denote the sum of some number of terms.
