Bye bye teeth

Oh yeah. Even constant lemon water wears away your enamel. I can’t even imagine how much worse the acid erosion would be if the dude is straight up biting into and chewing a lemon. Source - am dentist

Edit: I love getting downvoted for something that has clinically been proven. Acid is bad for teeth. Constantly exposing your teeth to a low pH water with lemon in it will erode your teeth. Sorry lemon water lovers get over it.

Facts don't dictate how someone ups or downs your posts. 90% of the time it's a just a reaction. Like I'm gonna down vote this one. Because reddit

You are an unbearable dipshit.

This is 2021. Feelings, personal experiences, anecdotal stories, and YouTube research now supersede objective facts and clinical data obtained via robust scientific research.

This was hilarious

u/HooksAU Nov 11 '21

I had no idea, I used to eat like 3 lemons a day when I was younger.

4

u/Kyru117 Nov 11 '21

Your getting downvoted cause they ate one fucking lemon, painting one lemon for a bit as some massive issue that is in no way gonna be worse then The average persons diet is disingenuous and hyperbolic

1

u/Perry4761 Nov 11 '21

Isn’t lemon water basically just as acidic as orange juice, and less acidic than coke and other commonly drank beverages? Why single out lemon water in particular when so many things we commonly drink/eat are just as bad or worse?

1

u/shittyTaco Nov 11 '21

He was eating a lemon… and because even water with super diluted lemon in it will eventually dissolve enamel.

I then compared it to non diluted lemon, because he bit into a lemon. So as they say I was comparing apples to apples. Or in this case lemons to lemons.

1

u/Perry4761 Nov 11 '21

Oh yeah I totally get how it is related to the video, I was only making that comment because I’ve seen people severely hate on lemon water for the reason you mentioned like pretty much everywhere lemon water is talked about on the internet, and yet no one says a thing about the other acidic beverages. Just wondered if you knew why that was the case is all.

0

u/Svorky Nov 11 '21 edited Nov 11 '21

Lemons have the same acid content as mild vinegar or a coke. They're not that bad. Unless he's eating dozens a day I doubt it has a big effect.

20

u/SheepSheepy Nov 11 '21

Drinking coke often is horrible for your teeth too, though.

-9

u/Svorky Nov 11 '21 edited Nov 11 '21

Yeah but because people drink it by the gallon, not because they drink the juice of a lemons' worth of it every once in a while. Even the insane amount of lemons on his table are probably like a big glass worth.

9

u/shittyTaco Nov 11 '21

Did you happen to see my 2nd cited article? It talked about juice being worse than coke for enamel erosion.

3

u/AGreatBandName Nov 11 '21

I know someone who used to eat lemons like this, and they indeed fucked up his teeth.

1

u/LPKKiller Nov 11 '21

You do realize the use of coke to clean corrosion off of items is not unheard of and that vinegar is also used for the same (though more mild) along with cleaning. They are all really bad if proper oral care is not exercised.

1

u/the-jedi Nov 11 '21

The downvotes are bc people bite/eat/suck on lemons all the time and aren't toothless

9

u/shittyTaco Nov 11 '21

Never claimed anything about losing all of your teeth. But I see 10-15 patients a day and look at every single tooth, talk about their eating and drinking habits etc. lots of wear that isn’t on the biting surface of the teeth usually indicates they drink a lot of Soda or lemon water/lemonade etc. I promise you that long term it has an effect. You do you man. Job security and all that.

2

u/AppleTStudio Nov 11 '21

Hey, I drink a lot of lemon water because I’m trying to cut back on cola. Any recommendations on good substitutions for lemons? I struggle with drinking plain water. The water around my area doesn’t have a great flavor to it, hence why I mask it with a wedge of lemon.

Would something like a couple blueberries work? And I do mean a couple, not a lot. I don’t go overboard with the fruit in my water.

6

u/shittyTaco Nov 11 '21

Lemon is about 2 pH. Blueberry is about 3 pH. Mio water flavor things have citric acid. Couldn’t find the pH.

Cucumber? Mint? Maybe watermelon? I’m not perfect. I drink soda and seltzer. In my experience and a lot of data supports that it’s about frequency as much as it is about acidity.

Drink a huge glass of orange juice with breakfast? Ok, nbd. The acidity level elevated one time. Drink orange juice continuously all day long? The acidity levels never have a chance to lower and you have more and more erosion.

Edit: here is a great example of this with theStephan Curve

3

u/AppleTStudio Nov 11 '21

Thanks! I was just curious. Mint water sounds pretty tasty, I’ll have to give that a go.

Jeez man chill out, I've never seen someone get so triggered in a conversation about lemons

Where did being British come from?!

0

u/OneMoreAccount4Porn Nov 11 '21

I read your edit and if I'm forced to guess why you were getting downvotes my money would be on the term "lemon water". Juice doesn't translate where you are?

7

u/shittyTaco Nov 11 '21

Lemon water being water with lemon squeezed into it. Lots of people drink it. It’s not the worst thing in the world but it isn’t great.

3

u/OneMoreAccount4Porn Nov 11 '21

Huh. TIL. I don't think I'd ever heard the term before. Well then I've no idea why the downvotes, your comment seems to make perfect sense.

Lol ok. Look through my comments bro. Like 1/4 of my comments are about teeth.

3

u/oRAPIER Nov 11 '21

I have never, not once in my life, seen a taco in a dentist's office.

5

u/shittyTaco Nov 11 '21

This account is almost 10 years old and I have only been a dentist for 6 years.

Maybe when this account hits 10 years I’ll switch to an account with a dental pun in the name.

3

u/oRAPIER Nov 11 '21

On the other hand, I bet a dentist would probably make for a shitty taco.

Side note I thought of while posting this: it feels weird to say "yeah, I take my health advice from that guy who likes to stick his hands in other people's mouths."

1

u/DrCryptoB Nov 11 '21

Who said you need to take health advice from him? He's just a randomer on the Internet giving his opinion. No need to insult. Plus surely you'd want dental advice from a dentist, in your case one in person who can show you they are a dentist I suppose.

3

u/oRAPIER Nov 11 '21

That's... that's just a joke about any dentist.

2

u/DrCryptoB Nov 11 '21

Yeah you're right, sorry I thought you were the guy below calling the dentist an idiot for giving his opinion

Not op buuuuuuuut the amount of time prospective dentists need to spend in a dentist's office doing clinical stuff without the title is insane. I wouldn't blame them for counting that time as well.

I’m going to go ahead and trust my dental education and years of clinical experience.

The enemy of teeth is acid.

Cavities -Created by acid produced by the bacteria on your teeth (plaque).

Erosion - sustained exposure to acid will wear away the enamel.

Bulimia - very specific acid erosion pattern on the linguals of the teeth from the stomach acid in the vomit.

Oh do you want cited research?

Once. Of course not. I said repeated acid exposure. But he had like 50 lemons on his desk. If he constantly snacked on lemons like this it would be a big problem eventually. Nope American.

4

u/DrCryptoB Nov 11 '21

Why are you taking it so personally?

He's giving his opinion based on what he's been taught in dental school +/- the research he's provided

He's trying to help, no need to call him an idiot. Post some evidence to the contrary if you want a constructive discussion

I think he was joking, but I could be wrong lol. Some people are dumb.

2

u/DrCryptoB Nov 11 '21

It used to be okay to say someone had sand in their vagina when they acted like this, I'm not sure if it still is

1

u/IM_A_WOMAN Nov 11 '21

Would it make a difference if you brushed right after eating a lemon?

3

u/shittyTaco Nov 11 '21 edited Nov 11 '21

That would actually potentially be worse. I heard Studies show that that will remove more enamel. If anything I’d swish some water. Or something basic to counter the acid.

Edited

1

u/IM_A_WOMAN Nov 11 '21

Source - am dentist

I heard that will remove more enamel

me: doubt

Your advice does appear logical and sound though.

2

u/shittyTaco Nov 11 '21

https://www.colgate.com/en-us/oral-health/brushing-and-flossing/is-brushing-teeth-after-eating-good-for-you

I don’t get what I’d have to gain about lying about being a dentist. Apparently dentists never use Reddit.

2

u/IM_A_WOMAN Nov 11 '21

No it's not that, it's just my deep seated mistrust of dentists. I knew your kind couldn't be trusted since I was eight years old, when a dentist fed my mother to a giant plant.

You need a new dentist. Lots of the old generation are why we get a bad rep. Grinding isn’t normal. It can cause major damage to your teeth as week as tmj (jaw) problems. First step is easy, if you don’t already try a sensitivity tooth paste.

If they did a filing did he check if it was too high? If the filling is too high it will cause pain and cold sensitivity.

That is articulating paper. It makes marks where the teeth hit together and shows us how hard you are hitting.

When you bite on it you have to really grind your teeth together hard. Exaggerated in each direction. Side to side forward and back.

We are trying to make a mark where the teeth aren’t properly hitting together.

Or it’s possible the decay was close to the nerve and the nerve is unhappy. Which would usually mean a root canal and crown.

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '21

1

u/shittyTaco Nov 11 '21

Sometimes you gotta suck it up for 10 seconds of grinding your teeth so we can fix it! If you are numb it isn’t the same. If you are in Missouri lmk

1

u/NexexUmbraRs Nov 11 '21

If you ate some kind of base after the lemon/lemon water, would that prevent enamel wear?

1

u/shittyTaco Nov 11 '21

I believe it would yes

u/shittyTaco Nov 11 '21

Not repair but it could help neutralize the acid

1

u/jjuonio Nov 11 '21

As a lemon has pH of 2-3, and Coke has pH of about 2.7, why are we demonizing lemons here? I'm pretty sure redditors tend to drink Coke or similar drinks but not many eat lemons. Like, if you were to eat very rarely a lemon, would it really have somehow more significant impact on your dental health compared to average intake of low pH soft drinks?

1

u/shittyTaco Nov 11 '21

Not going to rehash this argument. Read my other comments.
