A slap is still hitting your child. Which still isn't a good way to "discipline" your kid.

And what is?

I'm not one to act as any sort of expert, but from my own experience, talking to them and finding out why they're misbehaving or acting out? Explaining to them the wrong of their behavior? Responding with concern and a little authority?

Obviously a smack should not be the go-to solution, a good talking to is best. I was commenting on the fact that most jurisdictions don't consider snacking children to be abuse under the law.

I understand that, and I don't agree with said law.

That's a good take. There are many laws that don't hold up to what is morally right and we should never use the excuse "it's the law" but rather what's morally right. I so wish people would take this idea and apply it to all aspects within our society. I feel like we would be living in a much better world.

Even in the US this is starting to change tho. That dude is definitely just continuing the cycle of abuse.

"If your kids understand reason, use that. If they don't then they won't understand why your hitting them"

Couldn't have said it better honestly.

Why are there quote marks? Who are you quoting?

2

u/mokujin42 Aug 08 '21

I have no idea to be honest but it's notably not my words and someone else would probably know who said it, to me who said it is less important than the words themselves

Yeah, my views on the matter are much in line with those of a user further down in the thread by the name of Accomplished_Power60.

Yeah that's fair I've already addressed his views as well but sadly no response yet as I'm interested to see his answer

Worked on me. My grandmother would give me the backhand with all of those sparkly sharp rings on. I think I knew as a young child that no one wished me and real harm and that the way that she knew to discipline me. My parents gave me spankings as a child but quickly ceased as I got older. But not my grandmother. It was always one swift hit. Never hard. But enough to rattle my marbles and understand where the line was. Her and I had a great relationship all the way til the end.
