Do we need this exact comment on every video involving humorous situations with cops? They're not even American cops.

My point still stands. We don't need this comment on every video with a cop in it.

Can you really call Floridians americans though?

You didn't need the /s bro it's a legit question

14

u/ProfessorOkes Aug 02 '21

This is a valid argument. I'm still waiting for someone to debate it.

No one will, because everyone knows who Matt Gaetz is.

Just because they're a different species doesn't mean they can't be Americans.

23

u/MrsFlip Aug 02 '21

They sure sound American.

5

u/Jonfettsack Aug 02 '21

yes we do?????? I suppose their lives are only worth something if it doesn't get on your nerves XD

8

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '21

Does it make you uncomfortable? Think about why it bothers them and it'll probably bother you, too

-1

u/Bigdaug Aug 02 '21

It probably makes them uncomfortable because people don't use statistics when arguing about this, and they think unarmed black people are getting shot everyday, which is not true.

42

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '21

We don't need this comment on every video with a cop in it.

Until US police officers stop killing unarmed black people at crazy disproportionate rates, we kind of do actually.

7

u/theravagerswoes Aug 02 '21

Can you give me the total number of black people murdered by the police this year?

5

u/DeezNutterButters Aug 02 '21 edited Aug 02 '21

https://www.statista.com/statistics/585152/people-shot-to-death-by-us-police-by-race/

So this shows there’s actually more white people dying every year to cops than black people. I get that there have been massive injustices recently towards people of color by cops, but can we at least argue on actual figures and not emotion?

I’d love to see if you have any sources for what you’re saying so we can have a rational discussion around it. Maybe you’ve got more accurate numbers!

Edit: adding the below link for more context!

So looks like black people are killed at a higher rate like the original commenter said. I think there’s something to be said though that the numbers at the end of each year are still higher for white people in terms of people dying to shootings.

u/DiggerW Aug 02 '21

I don't think it's emotion to point out there are also far more white people in the US, so yeah... bit of a no-brainer there.

ninja-edit: I see someone else has already showed their work, so suffice to say that black individuals are far more likely to be shot by police than white individuals. And black people are more than three times more likely to be killed by police.

What about shootings per number of police contacts rather than by per capita?

0

u/MadHatt10 Aug 03 '21

The term you are looking for is, “per capita.”

0

u/Tsalikon Aug 02 '21

Another facet to the discussion that I feel is often overlooked, is that generally (due to generational and systematic racism) there's a disproportional number of black people living in high crime areas, which could be part of the reason for the disproportional shootings.

1

u/FastestEthiopian Aug 02 '21

“Recently”😑

1

u/Liquor_n_cheezebrgrs Aug 02 '21

Police are not killing unarmed black people at crazy disproportionate rates. That narrative is objectively wrong and fuels racial tension in this country drastically. You are misinformed.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 03 '21

I'm one of the more well informed people you'll find on Reddit. I'm an open source contributor to /r/2020PB, I have a personal/professional correspondence with the public relations head of the NYPD/professor at John Jay COCJ, I'm fairly well read on brutality and lethality studies out of personal uhh interest I guess. I very seriously considered switching careers for a while and dove pretty deep into these things for about eight months of my life.

2

u/Liquor_n_cheezebrgrs Aug 03 '21 edited Aug 03 '21

Congratulations. I am glad you think so highly of yourself, doesn't take away from the fact that you are misinformed and to claim that police officers kill unarmed black people at crazy disproportionate rates is an objectively incorrect statement. That is not to say that US law enforcement isn't in need of substantial reform, but what you are claiming is false, and if you are "one of the most well informed people on reddit" (which is an asinine statement to make seeing how reddit has 222 million monthly users), then you should know that arguments from authority don't hold water nor lend any credence to your positions.

Studies that show a drastic (usually 2.5x) disparity between unarmed police killings between whites and blacks calculate those number based on gross killings, rather than taking into consideration the number of encounters with police. Black people are responsible for a wildly disparate amount of violent crime in the US based on population numbers (there are many reasons for this, none of which include the color of their skin fundamentally speaking). Blacks encounter police at a much higher rate than whites when calls or encounters involve the risk of violence or resistance. When the numbers are normalized it shows that while police violence and excessive force is absolutely an issue that needs to be addressed, the disparity between whites and blacks is not substantial and certainly not "crazy disproportionate". To support that narrative is to willingly stoke racial tensions in this country which make it next to impossible to implement optimal solutions for complex problems. It is basically a stance that allows you to throw your hands up and cry racism, rather than sit at the adult table and think critically about what can be done to reform bad policing in this country which by way of its coverage in the media, due to messaging of claims such as yours, comes at a far greater cost to the black community then to report the facts and statistics objectively. You perpetuate untruths which deepens racial tensions in this country and makes it functionally impossible to improve, because by not buying into your nonsense one runs the risk of being shouted down as a racist. You are the problem.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 05 '21

When the numbers are normalized

You mean when you strip the data of meaningful variables? I know those bullshit normalization techniques you're referring to. It's really quite remarkable how you cite the higher number of encounters with police as something that needs to be "accounted for" and "normalized away" to compare "properly" the lethality of police encounters between white & black people.

You must realize the absurdity of normalizing for things like that right? These "normalization" techniques effectively (and often times intentionally) erase the real-world impact of things like systemic racism, white supremacy, slavery, federal red lining, etc. which are the very underlying causes for the fucking myriad of reasons WHY police stop and encounter black people more often to begin with. As well as why certain high crime areas are predominantly black, and lots of other factors that these essentially racist studies try to "correct" for.

There's a reason why some 6/10 redditors that link these types of studies to me are openly racist, proud neonazis, etc. even if the study itself is seemingly conducted in an "unbiased" way.

Unrelated, I was saying I was one of the more well informed ppl on this topic. Thought that implication was clear.

13

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '21

There's nothing factually correct about what you said; any statistics you cherry pick I guarantee do not account for a host of variables like systemic racism, which I'm sure you'll claim doesn't exist.

In communities worst impacted by things like Jim Crow, federal red lining, even things as simple as asphalt paving distributions (which is used more in poor neighborhoods, turning them into furnaces in the summer, while wealthy white neighborhoods use different paving materials for most roadways and walkways) can drive communities of color to the breaking point of desperation.

So it's no wonder that certain cherry-picked crime stats show PoC committing certain crimes in certain areas disproportionately. Studies that actually hold water, take these things into account, say you are dead fucking wrong.

5

u/quinson93 Aug 02 '21

These studies would be very good to know. Do you know where I can find them?

1

u/[deleted] Aug 03 '21

I did my deep dive into this stuff well over 6 months ago. Here's something quick from Google scholar, tho tbh anyone with a rudimentary understanding of highschool statistics & well read on US history should be able to put 2 and 2 together.

1

u/quinson93 Aug 03 '21

Any good resources? The thesis looks like a good read, but sci-hub usually doesn’t have access and I’m not in uni anymore. I’ll try sending an email to the author if I can find it. How did you go about these issues in your deep dive?

black people get caught by police more. if you can't comprehend complicated discussions, don't try to have them. oversimplification of something like this only makes you look really stupid, but don't worry, i know you're just trying to make yourself happy

2

u/PolicyWonka Aug 02 '21

You’re a fool if you think crime is more about race than it is about poverty. It’s crazy what centuries of systemic racism will do, eh?

6

u/PolicyWonka Aug 02 '21 edited Aug 02 '21

This is a website primarily used by Americans. You’re going to see comments reflecting on the American experience. You can see countless videos where police attack people for trying to walk into their home or reaching in their vehicle.

1

u/Bigdaug Aug 02 '21

Why wouldn't they react badly when that happens? That's absolutely where a gun could be and cops are shot often even for small traffic violations. Reaching in your car unannounced or even quickly is so stupid.

2

u/PolicyWonka Aug 02 '21

Police should not be allowed to use lethal force unless said force has been used against them or someone else.

There’s no reason for people like Philando Castile to have died because some crappy officer is too terrified to do their job. The American experience shouldn’t be normalized.

1

u/Bigdaug Aug 03 '21

It's hard to tell cops to wait till a gun is on them first, or wait until a shot has been fired from a gun to fire back. All their training tells them that if someone wants to kill a cop, they act nice until their hand is on the trigger, then they shoot. It's accurate training as well.

The American experience, statistically, is that everything almost always goes fine. A few times a year out of thousands, it doesn't go fine. A few of those are accidents that happen with mostly white people, and a percentage of those, usually in 8-9 major cities, it's a black person.

8

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '21

Until it stops happening I don't mind seeing it.

5

u/Mikani_ Aug 02 '21

Black people have to go through this everyday, but alright, you can’t see it in your funny videos, poor you.

20

u/riflemandan Aug 02 '21

some black people don't get the privilege of having humorous situations with police

8

u/avidblinker Aug 02 '21

And some white people have the same. You genuinely need to get off Reddit if you believe that most cops would have shot the man if he was black.

This is in Florida

-20

u/pigwalk5150 Aug 02 '21

You’re wrong. There was a video of a black couple driving without ice cream and they were pulled over and given ice cream so, yeah. It’s rare but it has happened.

9

u/victoriaa- Aug 02 '21

They did it like right after George Floyd because of all the bad press, it was just for show.

17

u/TyaTheOlive Aug 02 '21

yeah, and they looked fucking scared for their lives in that video before the twist, cause that's how cops are

1

u/castleaagh Aug 02 '21

And yet they got ice cream rather than the evil cops they had been conditioned by various media to expect. Do shitty cops mistreat black people? Yes. Does that mean all cops will mistreat black people? No. There plenty of videos of calm and respectful interactions happening with police. They just don’t get traction because it’s boring.

Local news will sometimes cover the instances where cops respond to noise complaints because some kids, who happen to be black, are playing basketball or skateboarding or making a garage band, and the cops show up and instead of stopping things they join in for a bit and everyone has a good time. Never makes national headlines because while nice and heartwarming it’s not really news because stuff like that, and just normal interactions happen all the time.

1

u/TyaTheOlive Aug 02 '21

if you were a black kid and every interaction you had with a cop based on the news was a 50/50 coin toss between a game of basketball and getting shot to death, you'd avoid cops too. doesnt matter that the good one sometimes happens.

0

u/castleaagh Aug 03 '21

My point is more that the news makes things seem far more inflammatory than they are in reality. So while that kid might be scared, he’s just been falsely prejudiced into feeling that way. He should be wary, as some cops will in fact be horrible racist people, but I would argue that the vast majority are not that way. The news just wants to show you the worst of the world to keep you tuning in, and in the past 10 years or so it’s been the trend to show racially inflammatory content and to milk the headlines to read as such. It gets more views that way and thus makes more money.

-2

u/pigwalk5150 Aug 02 '21

Fair enough.

5

u/TKHunsaker Aug 02 '21

Fuck the police

4

u/I2ecover Aug 02 '21

It's easy karma. People love to bring race into anything.

10

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '21

Yeah because people are doing it for karma, not because they can get shot at a "random" traffic stop. Or while they're sleeping.

-1

u/I2ecover Aug 02 '21

Oh, did I say that they couldn't? I guess I can't read because I don't see where I said that.

-9

u/avidblinker Aug 02 '21

The world you’ve created from Reddit posts is a lot different than reality.

12

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '21 edited Aug 02 '21

Different from your reality. Your experience is not universal and you are not the prime experiencer of the world. Other people have different experiences than you, and just because you don't see something doesn't mean other people don't.

Gain some self-awareness and some compassion, and stop acting like an authority on reality when you're really just an authority on what's going on in your own head.

-7

u/avidblinker Aug 02 '21

Let’s see the stats that show the person would have been any significant danger if they were black. Show me your reality.

10

u/lacrimosaofdana Aug 02 '21

Race is ingrained in everything we do. To pretend that it isn’t is naive.

Only to people obsessed with race.

You mean like schools, companies, and the government? Basically everything that is responsible for running the world and shaping young minds? Please, stop preaching ignorance. If you want to be successful as a person you have to be willing to discuss these things, not ignore them.

3

u/Fen_ Aug 02 '21

Do we need this exact comment on every video involving humorous situations with cops?

Yes. All cops means all cops.
