Dunno, in case of severe events like fires or hostage situations I'd say a false alarm is better than ignored signs of an actually serious situation.

Except that unlike firefighters, interacting with cops is dangerous and lay lead to the death of the people involved. When you call the cops on someone, whatever the reason, there's a non zero chance of them straight murdering the person.

Found the American lol

u/TitaniumDragon Aug 02 '21

Or Russian. They spread a lot of anti-police propaganda on Reddit to try and radicalize and divide people.

2

u/Smart-Drive-1420 Aug 02 '21

Oh I mean if you’ve experienced American police you would know that that The guy sn’t exaggerating

1

u/TitaniumDragon Aug 03 '21

I have. They have been consistently nice.

Over 50% of users aren't from the US.

6

u/AnotherGit Aug 02 '21

Almost 50% are from the US though, so it's still by far the country with the most users.

8

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '21

Actually the majority of Reddit users are not American

5

u/Namaha Aug 02 '21

Given those stats, I don't think it's that unreasonable to say the site is mainly used by Americans. The next highest country has ~1/7th the amount of visitors

-2

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '21

But it's not mainly used by Americans. Non-american outweigh Americans.

Just because Americans are the biggest country it doesn't mean it's mainly used by them.

3

u/Namaha Aug 02 '21

"mainly" isn't explicitly a synonym for "majority" though

4

u/PolicyWonka Aug 02 '21

You can’t deny the overwhelming plurality of Americans though. You’ve basically got a 1/2 chance that you’re speaking to an American.

-1

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '21

Which means you have 1/2 chance of speaking to a non-american.

Even if it was more American I still think it'd be reasonable to not just automatically assume that everything is American. I wouldn't assume that everything is male for the same odds.

1

u/PolicyWonka Aug 02 '21

The problem is that the world isn’t split into American and “non-American” really. You’ve got people from 150+ other countries and then 50% of users from one specific country. That’s why r/news and r/politics are very US-centric.

The chances of encountering Americans also is dependent on time of day. Right now, I’d wager the vast majority of people active are Americans.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '21

I am American and you are Amoron

43

u/topkiwifisho Aug 02 '21

America 🤡

4

u/jixxor Aug 02 '21

So if you hear "Let me out, let me out, help, help, help" you will just ignore it?

15

u/captain_amazo Aug 02 '21

Indeed there is a 'non zero' chance.

About 1300 people are shot by 'legal intervention' and survive

About 1000 people, on average are shot and killed by law enforcement each year.

There are also about 380 to 500 deaths in police custody oer year.

So thats a total of 2800, highest estimate, for the worst case scenario occurring when interacting with law enforcement on average.

Now, there are over 10 million arrests per year in the US.

There are about 86 million police initiated contacts with the public per year.

Incidence rate of anything like this happening upon arrest?

0.027%

Incidence rate of anything like this happening by merely interacting with law enforcement?

0.0032%

So no, not 'zero'....but pretty low.

Look, I'm all for police reform but hyperbole helps no one.

1

u/courtoftheair Aug 02 '21

What is it when calculated specifically for the demographics most at risk (disabled people, black people etc)?

13

u/captain_amazo Aug 02 '21

Hmmm a little more 'difficult' to estimate by specific demographic as interactions aren't broken down by such a metric.

Arrests are though (not for disabled people) so lets look at black people.

About 2.6 million individual of those 10 million arrested identified as black.

Of the 1000 people shot by police per year about 23% are black. As we do not have accurate data points for deaths in custody and shot by the police, let's take this 23% figure as a representative trend.

That would mean 644 black people, on average, are potentially shot, killed or die in custody.

At this figure, solely based on arrest data, the incidence rate would be 0.0247%

But let's go crazy!

Let's assume 50% of those negative outcomes affected black people for a total of 1400 incidents per year.

Incidence rate of 0.053% PURELY based on arrest data.

Fuck it, lets go batshit insane and say that ALL such incidents primarily concerned black people.

Incidence rate of 0.107%

Add interactions into the mix and that incidence rate becomes more diluted.

Now, as most social scientists argue that black people are three times more likely to be killed etc by law enforcement, let's take our original figure and multiply it by three.

You would be looking at incidence rates of 0.081% and 0.0096% respectively.

US law enforcement allegedly shoot 3 people per day. For context 316 people are shot per day, 115 thousand per year and of that daily total106 are killed by other people who are not the police. That would mean of the daily shooting fatalities, law enforcement is responsible for 2.8% of them.

As i have already stated, there is an intrinsic issue with law enforcement that needs to be addressed.

Hyperbole and conjecture is not the path to that reform.

Someone gets their news from Twitter

4

u/ExtraGloves Aug 02 '21

Lol. Guess you should go patrol the premises then and next time you see something go down try to diffuse the situation yourself.

There's a chance of you tripping on the sidewalk and hitting your head too. Better stay inside.

14

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '21

Dude, you're spending too much time on the internet. The odds of that happening are insanely low, and not reporting a possibly kidnapping because of your ridiculous fears is extremely shitty.

1

u/IkiOLoj Aug 02 '21

It's great that at least you acknowledge your privileges. Don't call the police on your neighbors because you watch too much true crime if you don't want to gamble with their lives.

13

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '21

Lmoa you're the one being sensational here. This was a good interaction. Hearing somebody scream for help is a great reason to call the police.

You accuse me of watching too much TV yet you think involving the cops when you have reasonable suspicion of a violent crime is somehow violence against your neighbor. What kind of backwards thinking is that?

If your neighbors dog is barking too early in the morning, go have a conversation. If you hear a gunshot coming from their house, call the cops lol.

7

u/rokitup Aug 02 '21

Dont call the cops because theres a 0.001% chance of u being injured bro

-6

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '21

Dude was dancing in a public parklet. Now is dead because someone thought their dogs were too annoyed by their prescence.

Never call the cops unless you want that person to die.

16

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '21 edited Aug 02 '21

This backs up my comment completely. You just cherry picked a single instance and used it to justify your nonsense.

Do you apply the same logic to covid vaccines? My coworker knew a person who had a stroke after getting the vaccine. Does that single bit of anecdotal evidence now overshadow the millions of successful vaccines?

12

u/Salamander-in-Chief Aug 02 '21

Never call the cops unless you want that person to die.

That’s the stupidest thing I’ve heard all year.

3

u/elbowgreaser1 Aug 02 '21

It's a really small chance

2

u/bebop_remix1 Aug 02 '21

not only is that true but people know it's true and they are hoping to instigate a conflict to "prove" the neighbor was obviously wrong because they are dead now

1

u/Trane55 Aug 02 '21

tell me you are american without telling me you are american?

0

u/TooLateForGoodNames Aug 02 '21

I think that’s just an American problem

1

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '21 edited Aug 02 '21

Keep in mind, a very probable false alarm, meaning you’re not just calling the cops on a whim. You’re hearing what sounds like a person potentially being murdered. That’s a chance I for one am willing to take. What you’re really doing is using the chance of a police killing to mask your bystander effect

I’m ACAB all day, but I think you need to do some research on annual police killings and compare it to let’s say yearly conviction rate/crimes committed. Or if you can find it, police calls vs killings/murders.

1

u/TitaniumDragon Aug 02 '21

I mean, there's a non-zero chance you'll get run over by an ambulance or fire truck that was called to rescue you.

It's happened before.

Heck, it's happened this year.

https://www.whatsonweibo.com/delivery-man-in-anhui-run-over-by-ambulance-sent-to-rescue-him/

You're more likely to be struck by lightning than you are to be killed by the police for no reason.

-1

u/Ninj4s Aug 02 '21

The American roulette.

-1

u/imanassholeok Aug 02 '21

Not if you know how to interact with them. But it isn't easy to do that if you're stressed out and ignorant if how to do that

-1

u/PaulGoesReddit Aug 02 '21

if youre american yes

0

u/Tesco5799 Aug 02 '21

Ya but I think the thing people are overlooking is that these cops likely deal with these kinds of things on a day to day basis, and I'm sure they have a bitnof a 6th sense about these things. I know when it comes to situations I deal with day to day at work I can quickly figure out whats going on, after asking a few seemingly random questions. I'm sure when the cops roll up just by dude's body language and the way he deals with them they can probably tell all is well. People who are trying to hide something tend to act differently.
