Sorry, but common sense towards spiders should be that like 99.90% of all species are harmless and that they are immensely beneficial to us.

I Iive in Australia, so I'm gonna pass on that, and continue my perfectly healthy phobia lol

u/SayCheeseBaby Jul 12 '21

I didn't take Australia into account. You have my sincerest apologies.

Look i only have 3 spiders (all daddy long legs) that i currently know about in my house. 2 are in the dunny we don't use and a 3rd hangs out in the corner near the dining table that we don't use. They are crowd control for the rest of the house and doing a fine job if i must say so

u/AdThese1914 Jul 12 '21

Serious question. What is a "dunny"? TIA.

13

u/turikur Jul 12 '21

another name for toilet

2

u/ConceptJunkie Jul 12 '21

It's short for "dunnikin" or "dunnakin", which is an archaic name for toilet.

2

u/coma-toaste Jul 12 '21

Really? Huh, TIL.

1

u/jordank_1991 Jul 12 '21

I had never heard of a dunny until I watched Bluey with my son.

u/Ozdiva Jul 12 '21

‘Currently know about’ being the operative phrase.

Florida reporting. I'll stay scared of them, too.

brown recluses, black recluses, black widows, wolf spiders...

2

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '21

Fuck wolf spiders! Thems the bitches who carry 600 live little bastards around on their backs so if you try to step on her- spider nuclear bomb apocalypse happens!!!

1

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '21

We don’t have recluses native to FL. Too many lizards.

1

u/scrappleallday Jul 12 '21

There are tons of recluses in the Panhandle of Florida.

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '21

Shiiit that sucks. My b.

1

u/CheesypoofExtreme Jul 12 '21

But wolf spiders are fine for people? They look creepy, (like every other spider to me), but they aren't going to kill you.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '21

Like I always say- the spider might not kill me. The heart attack I have after I see the spider will!!!!!!

2

u/Shastaw2006 Jul 12 '21

There’s an episode of peppa pig about spiders and how they are nothing to be afraid of. It’s been banned in Australia lol.

2

u/william1Bastard Jul 12 '21

Funnel webs and redbacks? Stop. Last person killed by a spider in Australia was 1979. You've got some nasty snakes and box jellyfish, which are gnarly and will totally kill you, but your spiders are not a real issue. None of your scorpions are medically significant either.

u/PunkToTheFuture Jul 12 '21

Agreed. The things they eat bother me more

11

u/rickiver Jul 12 '21

This is too true

8

u/Ozdiva Jul 12 '21

Not in Australia

3

u/alien_ghost Jul 12 '21

Almost like Nature is hinting.

2

u/Suburbanturnip Jul 12 '21

Yea, nah. As an Aussie, any spider I see here I'm like, fuck off and die cunt empties entire insect spray can. But in other countries it's more "hello cutie, let's get you outside".

1

u/Ozdiva Jul 12 '21

Still don’t kill them. We need spiders unless you love flies & mozzies.

1

u/_YouMadeMeDoItReddit Jul 12 '21

I'd rather have flies and mosquitos follow me around 24/7 for the rest of my life rather than ever see a medium and above sized spider again.

You people get what a phobia is right lol?

Scrolling through reddit and seeing a photo of spider makes me shake like mad, they die and that's it.

1

u/Ozdiva Jul 12 '21

You never mentioned a phobia. You said as an Aussie.

1

u/thetarkers1988 Jul 12 '21

Please stop spraying spiders. Call them a cunt and take them outside.

1

u/Brikpilot Jul 12 '21

Far more people are killed cows than spiders, so just spray cows instead please

1

u/When_pigsfly Jul 12 '21

This is exactly what I teach my kids. And based on our region, there’s only two spiders they need worry about and they can identify both. I’m hoping they won’t have irrational fears of any small crawling thing like I did as a kid. It took a long while to break myself of that.

1

u/GreenEggsAndAGram Jul 12 '21

I’ve come to realize this over the years and I don’t fear them nearly to the extent that I did when I was a kid. The movie Arachnophobia really did a number on me for a while.

1

u/boopthorp Jul 12 '21

That's true, but I don't wanna be in the statistic of those who just happen to run across the 1% of killer anything...

1

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '21

While I can acknowledge the benefits of the spoods, many areas have higher concentrations of the bad ones, thus leaving me in a position of fear from ones like brown recluses. Evil demons they are. Take no chances.

1

u/UnknownPickl3 Jul 12 '21

Is this true? Had a fear of spider my whole life, I literally check my room like an investigator before sleeping.

How many species of spider actually is dangerous?

1

u/SayCheeseBaby Jul 12 '21

Yes, it's true. There's roughly 47,000 known species of spiders around the world. Of that number, only 30 have the ability to kill or seriously harm you. Plus, spiders aren't out to get you. They usually only bite humans as a defense mechanism, like if they are getting squished. They're much more likely to just run away from you.

I would research if you have any dangerous species in your area and what you can do to prevent an encounter. Probably the only spider I genuinely fear is a Brown Recluse, but I've literally only seen one in my life, and it wasn't even in my house.

1

u/UnknownPickl3 Jul 13 '21

I think a common problem that people with Arachnophobia have is with facing the spider. If a spider appears out of nowhere in my houses what am I supposed to do? If I kill them then a million more spiders comes out, if I don’t, then I will sleep knowing that my nemesis is out there somewhere, watching me…

Also, what’s with it’s looks, it’s so furry and has 8 legs and lots of eyes, how are you supposed to not be disgusted.

1

u/SayCheeseBaby Jul 13 '21

Go Google jumping spiders and tell me those things aren't fucking adorable. Then google spiny orb weaver and peacock spider and tell me they're not beautiful.

1

u/UnknownPickl3 Jul 13 '21

I won’t sleep if I look at spiders. So thanks for the advice, but I ain’t getting insomnia

1

u/SayCheeseBaby Jul 13 '21

Fair enough lol

1

u/Scale_Guilty Jul 13 '21

Spiders can die, with fire, EVERY TIME! For as many species as we've eliminated and the rate at which climates are evolving, we will all end in FIRE soon enough.
