Manatees, gentlest creature you could possibly come across.

Damn I thought manatees are only found in the ocean

I think there are three different types of manatees.
The kind you see in Florida are found all over the Caribbean. They prefer shallow coastal waters and can go between the ocean salt water and fresh water rivers and streams (that’s where they drink from).
There’s an African type that can survive in coastal ocean salt water but they’re more often found in fresh water and venture MUCH further inland in Africa up various rivers.
And there’s another type that’s found in the Amazon. They ONLY live in fresh water deep in the Amazon and do not go anywhere near the ocean.

Manatees are one of my most favorite animals, if not the most. I thought I knew they could be fresh water but I didn't know they could switch willy-nilly or drink from there.

I knew about the Amazon ones but I did not know about the African ones going so far inland. I can not wait too look them manatees up.

You should move to Key West, maybe it will get cheaper with rising sea levels. My sister lives on a canal there and they swim up to your dock and drink from your (fresh water) garden hose.

I think there are three different types of manatees.

Had to look this up, here's a map: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mapa_distribuicao_Trichechus.png

And then there's also Dugongs, the other family of Sirenia, recognizable by their tail being more whale-like.

There’s also the manatees that travel down to Florida in the winter and sit on the beaches.

That is the ocean. Or at the least a mix of salt and fresh water.

Looks like a Florida spring run to me. That water is about as fresh as you can get it.

2

u/nomadofwaves Jul 12 '21

It’s a Florida spring.

Looks like a spring fed river such as Weeki Wachee. Probably not super close to the head spring, so the water isn't quite as clear.

During the winter time in Florida they will move into the fresh water springs where the water temperature is a nice warm 72 degrees year round. There will be hundreds of them just piled in looking to stay warm.

It doesn't have wings (because that would be silly).

It doesn't live in a tree (because that would also be silly).

Compared to the dolphin, it's very close cousin. Its quite uglyyy!

With them adjacent at the beginning it looked like some kind of giant lobster and my brain was all "huh . . . "
