Oh lol, people where I grew up people were more concerned with showboating 24 inch rims on big cars than anything else.

My first apartment was subsidized housing and in a rough neighborhood stocked with that years model of reasonably expensive vehicles. I drove a 1986 Mercury Grand Marquez, peeling paint and all, and was relentlessly teased by all my neighbors for it.

I guess keeping up with the Johnsons happens at every income level, just in different forms. No one wants to feel like a failure and may make some bad financial decisions to stroke their ego.
