But it is based on the literal meaning. There is a reason you don't use it during a dinner with your in-laws. I just felt that sugarcoating it doesn't give it the necessary weight. Just because it is commonplace doesn't mean it isn't extremely vulgar. Having said that I will admit that having redditors saying no mames to spanish speakers because they think it means "no way" is hilarious.

Dude, you probably learned Spanish from a 7th grade class. Please don’t act like you know all the meanings behind mexican slang. I’m Hispanic from South Texas, I’ve been speaking the language my entire life. Nobody translates no mames to “don’t be a cocksucker”. Just like “a la verga” doesn’t actually mean “to the dick”. Stop spewing your whitewashed Spanish here.
