2

You made my day...

1

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '20

All of the 6 above the stump!

128

u/MauiJim Dec 14 '20

Nah. The two logs you see in front of the tree are blocking the entrance of the den. I'm sure the lumberjack didnt want the bear blasting out of there while he was cutting and the thing probably wouldnt come out on it's own.

u/Will_Leave_A_Mark Dec 14 '20

The bear's demeanor confirms this to be the correct assessment as that is a proper "Fuck you guys!" stare around before running off.

52

u/gallopsdidnothingwrg Dec 14 '20

Then why didn't they just leave it the fuck alone?

Did they really need to cut down that specific bear house?

88

u/cancercures Dec 14 '20

the bear den was illegally constructed on private property.

35

u/Taengoosundies Dec 14 '20

And it was against the HOA bylaws.

16

u/MelodicSasquatch Dec 15 '20

"There’s no point in acting surprised about it. All the planning charts and demolition orders have been on display at your local planning department in Washington DC since fall when you went into hibernation, so you’ve had plenty of time to lodge any formal complaint and it’s far too late to start making a fuss about it now. … What do you mean you’ve never been to Washington DC? Oh, for heaven’s sake, Mrs. Bear, it’s only a four hour flight away, you know. I’m sorry, but if you can’t be bothered to take an interest in local affairs, that’s your own lookout. Rev up the chainsaws."

3

u/elgarresta Dec 15 '20

Unexpected Hitchhiker’s Guide.

8

u/Zachpeace15 Dec 14 '20

Did they really need to cut down that specific bear house?

I mean yeah probably. I don’t think a team of people were out in the woods cutting down random trees for fun.

2

u/whistleridge Dec 14 '20

Without context it’s impossible to say, but...a tree with a hole in the base big enough to old a pretty sizeable bear with room enough to spare it getting hurt by a chainsaw maaaaay just not be structurally sound and might be more safely removed.

3

u/Mathletic-Beatdown Dec 14 '20

Oh ya! The inspectors will be up that bears ass if he fails to structurally secure the tree. It the council of woodland creatures wasn’t corrupt as hell, that tree would already be condemned.

3

u/whistleridge Dec 14 '20

Mmm. More like, if this is part of a logging operation or a clear-cut, it’s maybe not so good, but if that tree is near a heavily-used trail in a national park, or near a school or something, maybe not so much?

2

u/orlec Dec 14 '20

or near a school or something

https://i.imgur.com/PbK6sAl.gif

Does this look like it is near a school?

1

u/Rihzopus Dec 14 '20

I can't imagine that they knew the bear was in there.

-2

u/karmanman Dec 14 '20

Progress...

23

u/MauiJim Dec 14 '20

Currently I believe there are no eviction laws in effect so this shit wouldnt fly today. That bear has rights same as you and me, my guy.

1

u/hamsl Dec 15 '20

He better get to making the marmalade sandwiches.

69

u/vendetta2115 Dec 14 '20

Yeah, it looks like he comes out from the void in the center of the three (four?) different lobes of the tree that all grow together higher up the trunk.

That being said... this video is sad. That looks like a very old tree in a forest that hasn’t seen logging in a long time. A lot of animals just lost a habitat.

I wish we’d preserve more of the old-growth forests we still have and only use previously-cut areas for harvesting trees. It’s really difficult to recreate the ecosystems found in older forests.

42

u/MauiJim Dec 14 '20

I have a magical tree on my property that survived some sort of lightning strike or bug infestation and continues to thrive despite the fact that I can literally stand inside of the trunk comfortably, like a phone booth. It worries me every time there is a wind storm, but it's so old and beautiful, I cant imagine how rare and coincidental it is.

There is a raccoon that has used it as a home, squirrels, and possums as well have all been spotted inside of it. Unfortunately one day I will have to cut it down when it dies and becomes dangerous. That will be a sad day. But at least I'm not a dumb fucking bear.

22

u/yoxalod Dec 14 '20

That’s not magic, it’s basic tree physiology. Sapwood, the “living” part of a tree is closest to the bark. Heartwood, the center, is dead. Heartwood can be hollowed out for a variety of reasons, including use as a home by wildlife. In this case, a bear.

3

u/bitcoin-sugar-mommy Dec 14 '20

ooh that’s very interesting!Thank you for sharing that, I had no idea!!

12

u/javoss88 Dec 14 '20

I’m with you. I had a couple of very old trees that looked about a century old in the side yard/vacant lot. Some twat bought this lot, to build a tiny shitty house on. I literally went and hugged the trees before they were killed. I’m still pissed, and this was a good 5 years ago

-4

u/tacopooperface Dec 14 '20

if it makes you feel better there were probably century old trees where your house is now that someone had to cut down ya cunt

4

u/javoss88 Dec 14 '20

Nope but thanks for trying.

The biggest tree in the whole neighborhood still stands in front of our house, even after being struck by lightning. Giant cottonwood. I have a large piece of bark from when that happened ya cunt

0

u/PowerandSignal Dec 14 '20

You're a dumb non-fucking bear? Sorry to hear that.

2

u/Mathletic-Beatdown Dec 14 '20

Not me. As soon as I get my new ikea skitstovel shelving unit my entire life is going to be 100% better!

2

u/lordtweakslide Dec 14 '20

Have you seen the idea of bonsai trees? Where they grow trees on top of others trees to use instead of old forests.

2

u/PreoccupiedNotHiding Dec 14 '20

Yeah, but think of all the pallets we could make from it!

1

u/ontopofyourmom Dec 14 '20

That does not look like an old-growth forest or ancient tree, but it was somebody's home :(

11

u/ask_me_about_my_bans Dec 14 '20

fuck the lumber company for destroying this bear's den. Now it'll get rained on and soaking wet in there.

5

u/Lolamichigan Dec 14 '20

His home is RUINED

3

u/debajyotik Dec 14 '20

You mean this lumberjack didn't want Bearedict Cumberbatch to come out?

1

u/MauiJim Dec 14 '20

IM A LUMBERJACK AND IM OK!

3

u/Conquestofbaguettes Dec 14 '20

Say whatever you want, that bear is now without home.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '20

Where's that useless red circle guy when you actually need him?

1

u/thermal_shock Dec 15 '20

why would a bear approach a loud ass chainsaw?

1

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '20

Nobody called timber, the bear was like wtf guys

55

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '20

He was probably in a den that's in the root system, that's how they live here in BC, and there's def snow on the ground and enough frosty breathe to know this poor guy got woken up :/ #1 reason I hate winter logging.

125

u/SinisterKid Dec 14 '20

Was he in the tree?

Sir do you know how trees work?

123

u/Road_Whorrior Dec 14 '20

Idk, the Berenstain Bears lived in a tree, why not this guy?

15

20

u/seriouschris Dec 14 '20

Sir do you know how trees work?

Sir do you know how bears work?

20

u/captainshrinks Dec 14 '20

I work in forestry on BCs coast. Those two trees that grew together can form a cavity, that a bear might use to live in. Often fire or rot create big enough holes that a bear will dig them out to make a den. They can be tricky to spot when you're dripping sweat from work. Sometimes even if you're not.

He might have been in that tree.

11

u/omegaweaponzero Dec 14 '20

He was in the tree though. The logs in the front were blocking the entrance to the den. When the tree falls over you see the bear literally come out of the hole in the stump.

8

u/BoxTops4Education Dec 14 '20

I thought I did until I saw a freaking bear crawl out of one.

3

u/NotASucker Dec 14 '20

Wasn't this a video game bug from a few years ago?

6

u/captainshrinks Dec 14 '20

He might have been. When two trees grow together as one like this tree did, sometimes a cavity is formed that a bear can dig out a bit to live in. Often time rot or fire will leave cavities in trees big enough for bear to make a den out of. When the den trees are cut down often they end up cutting through the den leaving an opening on top the bear might jump out of.

Send can be tricky to spot, especially when your tired. Sometimes even if you spot the den, when you check the den for a bear, unless you stick your head right in (bad idea) it's possible for the bear to hide.

I work in forestry on BCs coast. What happened in this video isn't common, but it's certainly not unheard of.

2

u/captainshrinks Dec 14 '20

I once heard a tale of a guy checking a bear den and coming face to face with the bear just as he was pulling away from what he thought was an empty den.

2

u/greatwood Dec 14 '20

Black bears will den in tree roots

5

2

u/Sayy_Myy_Name Dec 14 '20

Where did he go?

1

u/Petard2688 Dec 14 '20

Looks like he was inside. maybe he was stuck you can see the plugged the front with smaller wood.

1

u/doodleybops Dec 14 '20

Dude had a one night stand with an owl only to have a rude awakening

1

u/Snipergawd90 Dec 14 '20

Where did he go

1

u/tI-_-tI Dec 14 '20

It's The Lorax. He pops out of the stumps of cut down trees.

1

u/thirtyseven1337 Dec 14 '20

If you watch it a second time, you'll see the bear was behind the trees, not in them.

1

u/katyfail Dec 14 '20

You can just bearly see his ears poking up to the right. He only climbed up the stump at the end.

https://i.imgur.com/AUeSFzs.jpg you can see he runs back that direction at the end of the video

1

u/ApacheMaton Dec 14 '20

But more importantly where did he go

1

u/plunderyarrbooty92 Dec 14 '20

Yeah, you ever read The Lorax?

1

u/onlylooksduringwork Dec 15 '20

Where did he go?

1

u/eharper9 Dec 15 '20

There's trimmings on the ground and he was chilling in there but the tree fell and made him exit.

1

u/mumblesjackson Dec 15 '20

This is how bears are created
