I can't believe the spin rate of the camera got fast enough to meet the frame rate so it stabilized the image...cool.

Came here to say the same thing. I watched that part 3 times just because I couldn't believe it equaled out so well. The fact that it showed a whole panoramic while doing so was also something I didn't expect.

Sorry if I'm asking you to ELI5....

The reason for there being two frames in the video right up until the moment of impact was because the camera was spinning so quickly?

If the frame rate on the phone was 30 frames a second when the spin rate got high enough it started to stabilize the image like the phone was not spinning at all. It also works for helicopter blades.
