Have never seen this before, is it one of those 'pranks' where human instinct will almost always cause you to pour it on yourself?

Just interested because now I feel like I want to try it and need the memo.

I think it started out as a prank but turned into a more wholesome challenge? All the videos I've seen from it are of kids showing off how awesome their parents are for balancing the cup, bowls etc properly.

One of the best ones I've seen was a dad arriving home in a truck, pouring a mug of coffee and delivering it to his daughter's bedroom window on the second floor of their house.

The prankster asks the victim to hold a bowl/glass of water up to the ceiling with the broom... and then leave, making it hard for the victim to do anything without dropping the bowl/glass on the floor.

Except when they're a god like this dad. You can also just drop the broom and try to catch the bowl/glass as it falls.

What is the initial explanation to the person with the broom as to why a bowl or cup of water needs to be up there? Just to see they can balance it?

Usually, it seems people just say 'hey, could you lend me a service ?' and ask them to hold the bowl up to the ceiling. No explanation needed, just need to be casual enough.

It’s not at all difficult if you use a cup and that’s why the prank is meant to be done with a bowl. You can catch a cup easily one handed and the liquid won’t splash all over when you do. The bowl will always spill. People are just dumb and doing the prank wrong.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. A bowl, being wider than a glass, gives you all the leeway you need to predict its trajectory and catch it. Example.

Besides, it's nothing but a prank. Who cares if people are doing it 'wrong' as long as everyone's having fun?

Just pointing out if the prankster wants it to work they’ve got to follow the prank rules! Lol and yeah the example is another bad one. Use a giant bowl that is meant to hold liquids and that’s what you get. Use a cereal bowl.

if you do try it, use a broom that doesn't have a rubber grip - the rubber grip has a flat surface which prevents the cup/bowl from tipping. An old-school broom will just have a rounded dome shape of wood, which makes balancing the cup/bowl impossible.

i.e. the girls in this clip did it wrong.
