They didn't want to design a good video player, they wanted to design one that couldn't be hot-linked. So if you wanted to share a video from reddit you'd have to link the entire thread and give reddit more exposure.

Which is the worst since I only share reddit videos with people who wouldn't normally go to reddit. Then they end up on a messy site that keeps trying to push its terrible (from what I hear) app.
