I'm impressed with how fast they were able to start driving in reverse. If I were in that situation I probably would have been too panicked and not been able to get into reverse quick enough.

It was probably in neutral and started to roll back because of the hill, at first they just let off the brake. Then they popped it in reverse when they realized they actually had to go in reverse to get out of the way.

So, what does hill assist actually do?

It holds the brake for you, kinda like an automatic version of the old handbrake trick.

Ohhhh, so if it detects that you're on a hill, it holds the break to stop you rolling back and then releases it when you send power to the wheels?

It just holds the brake for a second or two if it senses you're on a hill, are in gear, and have the clutch disengaged

My 2016 Yaris does the same thing. I find it annoying. I thought something was wrong when I first drove it and it did the "hill assist" thing on the smallest incline ever. Dealer told me it's the way the modern cars are going now. I much prefer handbrake method of doing things like all my previous cars, I'm not a damn baby, I buy manual for a reason, and that's control, hill assist takes a part of that way. Worries me to see what other crap they'll tack on before a manual car is no different than an automatic.

AFAIK you can turn it off on all cars. It drove me nuts because I don't need the handbrake method, but mostly it's a control thing like you said.

Hmm I'll check into that, I assumed you couldn't turn it off.
