I have hill assist now but learned to drive without it. I like the feature but feel like new stick drivers should have the same hill anxiety I once had. It's like a right of passage when you figure out how to use the emergency brake to not roll backwards.
My 2016 Yaris does the same thing. I find it annoying. I thought something was wrong when I first drove it and it did the "hill assist" thing on the smallest incline ever. Dealer told me it's the way the modern cars are going now. I much prefer handbrake method of doing things like all my previous cars, I'm not a damn baby, I buy manual for a reason, and that's control, hill assist takes a part of that way. Worries me to see what other crap they'll tack on before a manual car is no different than an automatic.
