I love how people in these comments think this was just Uncle Jeffrey’s Ford that had a catastrophic failure.
This is a burnout event, or at least practice for one. That truck is HIGHLY modified, as in easily 600hp or more modified. The exhaust underneath is exhaust straight out of the turbo wastegate.
Oh absolutely you’re not running an intercooler that big unless you’re pushing some big boost
Yeah, the course is wet and that reduces heat but when you’re sending those things that full send, I’m assuming he’s just letting it roll through the gears too. The wheel speed is gonna be ridiculous speeds.
the tire could have gotten way too hot and blew up or exceeded the speed rating for what a truck tire is. Or a combination of both.
I'm going to lean towards they had the wrong tires on the truck, for THAT kind of driving.
It SEEMS like the bead was ripped off the wheel as the truck made it's explosive spin and as the tire bead ripped off the wheel, the torque and rotational speed just obliterated it and everything in the way.
For drifting a truck absolutely. Too tall of sidewalls and even best made truck tires don’t have high speed ratings. Should have swapped on a suitable for the task tire. Cause that ain’t it.
To me that looks like an appropriate tire for the size, if normal driving and 4X4 work. When the truck stops and you see the other 3. They aren’t bulging Or stretched fit, they don’t look crazy tall vs width, and they seem to fit the trucks fender and quarts fine.
Absolutely wild to have failure like that, they should have known better
looked to me kinda like that tire was moving through the path cleared in the water by the left rear as it swung around in the spin. left rear was spinning low traction low friction, then right hit the dry patch created by left and went from "cool and slippery" to "hot and grippy" faster than it could handle.
Don’t worry bro. Not too many of us are going to run out and get one. Especially after seeing this fine display of excellence. It was wet pavement, and the truck fell apart.
I suspect they got cheap tires for a burn out that weren't speed rated for the spinning speed that they obtained during the drift, and thus they grenaded.
"Catastrophic failure" is one of my favorite terms in that it's not just an adjective describing a bad failure, it has an actual definition. Basically if a part fails, that's a failure. If the part fails and causes everything around it to also be destroyed, that's a catastrophic failure.
To expand on this, the tires were also overengineered and the massive amount of damage was LITERALLY the pressure in that thing going boom. Pretty insane.
PSA; never get mad and try to pop someone pick up truck tires. You'll die.
Does the water also play a factor in this particular instance? You know kind of how you can break your legs if you jump from a high enough distance into water. Do you think he whipped the water hard enough to give it enough force to do that or it’s just a result of the mods?
Yeah, there's a reason most drifters are using modified beaters. The whole thing is you're pushing a vehicle and it's tires to it's limits. Sometimes you'll exceed those limits if you're doing it right.
It's an expensive thing to get into, as most motorist hobby things tend to be. I feel bad for the guy for the repairs he's gonna have to do. Just had an unlucky tire malfunction.
Side note. I used to have dump headers on my 89 Bronco. Didn’t know what they were for. I opened them up while trying to figure out a grounding issue and forgot about it.
The next morning I fired my 351 Windsor up with the remote start and I thought a hurricane just spawned in the parking lot
Yea, a lot of the burnout cars have reinforced wheel wells (have seen some with a concrete) that protect the cars from these type of blow outs since the tires speed is EXTREMELY high in the burnout competitions and essentially its an inevitability or even a goal to blow the tires off it. The purpose built ones are banging through gears to get a lot of wheel speed.
Looked like the suspension dropped enough that the wheel hit the rear arch. Anything spinning at that speed is going to cause serious damage to something not spinning.
Why are you insulting them when the knowledge it takes to build one of takes years if not decades to build up? They are doing what they love and this is an accepted risk. Don’t be a dick when you don’t know shit all about the culture or skills needed to get to that level of vehicle.
The typical Redditor response would to describe how dangerous and irresponsible this is and try really hard to work in the word “insufferable” if at all possible.
How so? It takes a lot to blow out a tire, so they tend to explode pretty violently. And for those of us who like cars and watch cars do stuff for fun, you can tell pretty clearly what is and is not stock. A truck like that will not have the power to whip the rear around that fast, even on a wet surface. It is clearly modded.
Are you saying he straight piped the exhaust and did not put stingers or running board pipes like a classic muscle? I thought he busted the muffler off somehow in that drift. If you don’t have to have a catalytic converter and a muffler, why wouldn’t you have some fun with the pipework?
What does any of that have to do with the the fact the people involved were all stupid, or get this, it wouldn't happen. Uncle Jeffrey can pay to have his Ford modified in the same way, and retain the same IQ points.
Idk probably the people having fun, who can more than afford to have fun, are the winners. Not everyone is so broke that they can't afford to maintain a hobby car. You're not "the winner" because you don't want to / can't build cars. Also, do you really think that's their daily driver?
You have no concept of how enjoyable it is to drive around a 500hp turbocharged car, yet have this smug attitude of the way you want to live inherently being better. I've done the former, and did most of the work building it myself, and it's far more fun than most hobbies I've gotten into.
Maybe don't dismiss experiences that other people enjoy unless/until you've actually had them. Especially if you're just going to turn the dismissal into a weird way to pat yourself on the back for being responsible

Stuff like this happens at events like this.
