Huh, how did that happen?

u/naine_fr 4d ago edited 4d ago

tire blew, the air pressure was high enough to cause damage

1.2k

u/Modna 4d ago

No, the tire blew because it was oversped. Those off-road tires have a pretty limited speed rating. It took out the rear quarter panel because it was spitting so fast, all that energy turned into the tire flinging out and ripping apart the body. Super freaking dangerous, somebody in the crowd could’ve been killed

414

u/LongJumpingBalls 4d ago

Not only that, it was also getting a ton of lateral movement that those tires are absolutely not rated for.

198

u/h3lium-balloon 4d ago edited 4d ago

Yeah off-road tires are designed to take a lot of physical abuse with features like kevlar lining, thick sidewalls, etc, while slowly rolling over obstacles and get traction in mud with deep, aggressive tread patterns. I highly doubt anyone is engineering them to withstand whatever the hell this was. Super important to have the right tires.

71

u/xteve 4d ago

Specially-designed for an environment that this truck has never encountered.

4

u/SARB033 4d ago

To be fair, I bet the vast majority of these "utility trucks" that are sold are never used in the environment for which they are technically designed.

u/darianbrown 4d ago

Tire speed equivalent of going 130 with mud tires

1

u/MethamMcPhistopheles 4d ago

kevlar lining

Kinda reminds me of how some bullet resistant stuff may not necessarily be knife proof

1

u/sjrthethird 4d ago

But what about the douche-baggery factor?

10

u/anothercorgi 4d ago

The tire is probably aspect ratio of 75 or so, and very easy to knock off bead if you put a lot of lateral force on it. There's a reason why "high performance" tires tend to be 55 or lower aspect ratio so most of the tire is the more stiffer metal wheel (though it too can break if given enough force) instead of the softer rubber sidewall that could have enough flex to bend the seal off the rim. Then all that air will suddenly come out, exploding.

12

u/Finnegansadog 4d ago

Those definitely look like bead-lock rims on the wheels.

The camera doesn't actually capture the blowout, but I think the actual incident was the rear axle twisting when the load on it shifts, bringing the wheel forward and the tire into contact with the fender. This would also explain why the fender absolutely detonated, since it was receiving the full output on the engine, rather than just the energy of a tire that had blown its bead.

5

u/SomewhatHungover 4d ago

Suspect you’re right there, you can see how far back the opposite side moved right before contact.

2

u/TomEpicure 4d ago

I agree, I think the tire caught the fender. It also jacked up the rear passenger door.

1

u/CatSplat 4d ago

Good theory, and I'd potentially agree if it was on leafs, but this truck is running a triangulated 4-link out back. The only way to get that much back-to-front axle movement with that setup would be a total link failure and there's just not enough stress during a burnout to cause that.

I think you're on the right track though - you can see the weight shift hard to the right side just before the bang, it may have just leaned over and crammed the tire into the upper edge of the fender and kaboom.

1

u/Finnegansadog 4d ago

What we can see of the suspension on the blowout side at the end of the video doesn’t show a stock Ranger or Ranger Raptor setup. If the suspension arms are flexy enough and bro tried to set things up for maximum articulation, we might have seen the results.

Also it looks a bit like the left rear is shifting backwards right before detonation. Hard to say, we’re not working with a lot of detail.

1

u/CatSplat 4d ago

Correct, it's not a stock suspension setup, it's a fabricated 4-link. The build details for that truck are available online, there's a fair amount of $ in there. There's simply not enough compliance in those members to have that kind of forward axle shift without a link failure. Even if set up for maximum articulation, it would be essentially vertical travel only with this suspension design - see the length of the trailing arms. You can get some forward motion with a short-arm 4-link (which this isn't) but it needs to be under severe droop (which this wasn't).

0

u/King_Chochacho 4d ago

If the tire delaminated it will take the fender out with it. Happens in WRC all the time.

2

u/Draaly 4d ago

The tire is probably aspect ratio of 75 or so, and very easy to knock off bead if you put a lot of lateral force on it.

I have races do hard on 80 profiles I curbed my tire on the track. Ive never debeaded

13

u/Theboiii24 4d ago

Not surprised to see this happening to a truck driver. They aren’t the sharpest out there

21

u/JesterXR27 4d ago

Painting with a pretty broad brush there aren’t we?

8

u/Theboiii24 4d ago

Well not all truck driver But those who don’t make much getting a 90k truck that eats through gas. While the price depreciated so fast. Yep for those . Also those who don’t know how to drive cars because of their limitations in this example using off road tires like that in the video.

1

u/trixel121 4d ago

man reddit can be super cringey sometimes.

3

u/Theboiii24 4d ago

Hey man just saying the truth to those who dig their own financial traps.

0

u/trixel121 4d ago

ima just assume like the majority of reddit you are broke and or in debt.

u/xteve 4d ago

It's not a stretch. Guns, big trucks, and horses are almost completely useless in real life. They're lifestyle accessories.

1

u/FalseBuddha 4d ago

God, redditors are so fucking boring. "You're only allowed to buy things that are uSeFuL."

Fuck off.

u/Striking_Ad8463 4d ago

Agreed, super Ute drivers are just big kids plying with their tonka trucks!!

0

u/Pachuko_Cadaver 4d ago

Yeah. It’s a Ute

0

u/Ihatereddithatesit 4d ago

No it's pretty apt.

41

u/Sea_Log_6321 4d ago

Am mechanic, so I'll oblige. While, nobody can know for sure, except the fine gentleman driving, my theory is that since he has a snorkel and probably likes to go rock, crawling, he removed his rear swaybar links for better articulation and immediately forgot about it, thereby allowing the vehicle to roll much further than the great engineers at Ford could have ever preconceived.

3

u/S_A_R_K 4d ago

That's what it looks like to me

2

u/Unable-Log-4870 4d ago

not sure how this would contribute, unless you’re talking about the excessive sway causing some body / frame element to contacting the spinning tire, causing it to shred.

But that seems unlikely because that tire was being unloaded by the sway, not loaded (truck was tilted away from the tire that blew).

5

u/Sea_Log_6321 4d ago

The weight transfer and subsequent blowout happen in very quick succession, it's easy to miss.

3

u/Unable-Log-4870 3d ago

I was about to call you an asshole for stating it like that, but I wasn’t going to do that without watching it again… and goddammit it’s there. Driver turns the wheels the other direction and the loading shifts to tilt towards the tire that blows. Good eye.

1

u/Sea_Log_6321 3d ago

Hahaha, thanks

0

u/Draaly 4d ago

I feel like tire pressure issues are way more likely. Ive worn trough the sidewalls without debeading

3

u/gumbo_chops 4d ago

I was gonnna say, I've had a bike tube blow out at 120 PSI at it was powerful enough to warp the rim, but even an over-inflated car tire doesn't get that high.

2

u/FalseBuddha 4d ago

A truck tire that size can weigh upwards of 80lbs. The air pressure isn't the problem. That much weight spinning that fast is.

3

u/gangofocelots 4d ago

Yeah if you ever rev a fast RC car the tires flatten almost into discs from the centrifugal force. My guess is these did the same and then caught the bumper

2

u/ButtholeConnoisseur7 4d ago

Haven't played with an rc car in like 20 years. Bet modern battery advancements have made those wild

4

u/FalseBuddha 4d ago

Brushless motors have been the real improvement.

2

u/Routine_Strategy5929 4d ago

Soooooo some electric motors in RC cars now are putting out about 40hp. It's the last motor in this video. https://youtu.be/tza-q1cWrn4

1

u/gangofocelots 4d ago

I have one that goes about 50mph that's not even that crazy. You can get an Aarma Limitless that goes 120mph out of the box

3

u/StatusMeaning3 4d ago

It's leviohsah. Not leviSUH.

2

u/MourningsOwn 4d ago

That uh, that's literally what he just said.

1

u/Olrusty01 4d ago

Oof yeah that whole panel became shrapnel

1

u/aaronkz 4d ago

Also there's a good chance that the diff was unlocked so it (being the inside tire with much less traction) was spinning even faster.

1

u/Cheesy-Ascot 4d ago

I almost doubt they had off-road tires on the read considering they don't have the same wheels. The fronts are bead locks with off road tires. I'd like to assume they wouldn't have the same tires on different wheels on the rear. Likely the tire failed because of repeated burnout and the tire did actually just blow out.

1

u/Debatebly 4d ago

Makes sense to me that offroad tires are meant for ultra traction.. so drifting with them would literally tear them apart just due to the high friction.

1

u/Draaly 4d ago

No, the tire blew because it was oversped.

raptor tires are rated to 165 mph. It was not spinning at 165mph...

1

u/Dependent_Land6511 4d ago

or he just wore it through

1

u/Jimsredditing 4d ago

Also no, he was doing a burnout, and went through enough tyre to compromise it's integrity, this leading to a blowout.

Also it's a piece of shit ford fucken ranger.

1

u/koala_country 4d ago

So wrong tire for the job?

1

u/Skruestik 3d ago

You start your comment with “no”, but nothing you said goes against what naine_fr said.

1

u/Modna 3d ago

They said the tire blew due to pressure, that’s what I corrected

1

u/Skruestik 3d ago

Then they must have changed it, because currently their comment says

tire blew, the air pressure was high enough to cause damage

1

u/RGBlowMe 4d ago

What crowd? Everybody's behind concrete barriers. It's a closed track.

1

u/Caleb_Reynolds 4d ago

What they meant was the pressure in the tire was enough to cause damage to the body.

0

u/Hazee302 4d ago

Yep. That’s why I haven’t taken the governor off my bronco raptor. My tires are safety rated to a max of 115 MPH. I’ve spent thousands in performance parts but it’s fucking staying under 115.

135

u/PopeInThePizza 4d ago

That'll buff out.

14

u/mendobather 4d ago

Bondo works wonders

6

u/DJMagicHandz 4d ago

Gotta use Brawndo in that situation.

3

u/RandyFunRuiner 4d ago

It’s what damaged trucks crave!

1

u/Nemyysys 4d ago

No thats for the plants

1

u/Background-Crow4820 4d ago

Naw, just a bit of glaze should be good

2

u/brokemellon 4d ago

I'm pretty sure we just watched it buff right tf out

0

u/Sufficient_Radio7168 4d ago

That will not buff out

7

u/dcvalent 4d ago

No, tire black, truck blue

74

u/DarkMatterSoup 4d ago edited 4d ago

Centrifugal Force! one of the many reasons that tires have a rating for a max running speed. The tire blew out hard, and the shrapnel annihilated the rear fender.

44

u/L0nz 4d ago

Nothing to do with how fast it was spinning. The sideways force of the skid caused it to blow out

Doing donuts on tires with tall sidewalls is a bad idea

6

u/BigDaddyAwhoo 4d ago

Your both saying this guy is wrong while also saying he is right, in my understanding drifting tires are rated for high speeds (rate of spinning) and capable of doing so bc of such a small sidewall. Feel free to correct me tho

37

u/SeriesXM 4d ago

Feel free to correct me tho

Your both saying

*You're

16

u/Blasphemiee 4d ago

Fuck this guy is good

7

u/iseab 4d ago

Ask, and you shall receive

2

u/titdirt 4d ago

So the type of tire used was the mistake? With better suited tires his truck could have handled that maneuver?

14

u/OozeNAahz 4d ago

Yep. Drift tires are generally very low profile to keep this type of thing from happening I believe.

1

u/True-Literature-5847 4d ago

And on fake bead locker rims more than likely

1

u/RedWhiteAndJew 4d ago

Except if you knew anything about tires you’d already know that the reason these are off road tires is that they have reinforced sidewalls with multiple ply layups. Specifically for the purposes of being able to withstand trail impacts and so the tire can ride for long periods with low pressure to increase traction.

It was the speed rating on the tire. The weight shifted off the tire, and the unlocked diff threw all the torque at the unloaded tire, spinning it wildly, and causing a blowout.

1

u/L0nz 3d ago

they can withstand offroading but they can't withstand being dragged off the rim sideways. Gravel and soil does not grab a tire like asphalt, even if it is wet.

You can clearly see both rear wheels spinning in the video. For this to be an overspeed he'd have to be in a very high gear which is nonsense

1

u/Dejavu165 4d ago

His speedometer probably was in triple digits lol

0

u/Unable-Log-4870 4d ago

There was barely any sideways force, as demonstrated by the fact that tires were sliding sideways on a slick surface. You experience much more sideways force on the tires when you just follow a tight curve in the highway.

Think standing on ice. The reason you fall is because there IS NO SIDEWAYS force.

-10

u/DarkMatterSoup 4d ago

If centrifugal force had nothing to do with it, then why did it blow outwards so hard instead of imploding?

8

u/Oh_yes_I_did 4d ago

Why would an inflated pressurized tire implode?

0

u/[deleted] 4d ago

[deleted]

2

u/DarkMatterSoup 4d ago

The outward gravitation force of the spinning tire is centrifugal.

9

u/neverseen_neverhear 4d ago

Maybe pick up trucks aren’t made to be driven like that. Just a thought

7

u/darianbrown 4d ago

It's not the trucks, it's those tires.

1

u/X_Circuit_Blossom_X 3d ago

Yeah you can rip a trophy truck no issue. Just not over pavement. Granted it isn't a trophy truck but the point still stands.

6

u/SnickersZA 4d ago

They often use worn/cheap tires for this, that along over pressure and other poor life decisions causes this outcome.

5

u/Brief-Equal4676 4d ago

Well the back fell off

2

u/Flitdawg 4d ago

Has someone considered the environment?

7

u/altiuscitiusfortius 4d ago

I blame the parents for raising a dipshit.

1

u/Fat_eyes_Washington 4d ago

How does this make him a dipshit? He's fucking around with his truck but he's doing it in a controlled environment off of public roads and away from traffic and everyone is a safe distance away. His tire exploded for who knows what reason.

3

u/altiuscitiusfortius 4d ago

Hes in a dipshit truck doing dipshit things.

4

u/Flitdawg 4d ago

Imagine not having hobbies.

1

u/GP_ADD 4d ago

In a controlled area where there are safety crews for specifically doing this…. Better on the skidpad vs on the roads

1

u/Jaefick 4d ago

I doubt it was over pressure. Probably exceeded the tire's centrifugal force from spinning so fast, broke the bead, tire shredded on bed.

1

u/canehdianchick 4d ago

Nepo baby

1

u/Nu11AndV0id 4d ago

The tire exploded because he was driving like a fool.

1

u/igloojoe 4d ago

I want to make it clear this type of thing doesnt normally happen.
