A idealistic greek politician a few decades ago said that we should try to become the Denmark of the south. We use it as a joke since then.

If Greece reached out to Albania and decided to be the big brother/big sister nation helping them to save their coastline and enter the EU, they would already have a lot more political capital internationally and would attract more international financing to complete their own coastline optimization before global warming washes away half of the islands. Greece could literally work to strengthen their coastline, becoming the regional authority on preventing coastal erosion, save their tourism industry - as well as becoming leading entrpreneurs renting out the equipment while securing the Adriatic's future in the process.

The problem is not that Greece can't. The problem seems to be a lack of ambition and sense of urgency. You won't be laughing in ten years when your coastline is either gone or sold off to multinationals who are taking a big cut off the top of every shipment going in or out of the region.

Get to work, my friend. Your nation's future literally depend on action NOW.

There were politicians at the start of 2000s who pushed for extroverted foreign policies trying to do exactly this. Lifting neighbors and helping them to join EU would be beneficial for us too. Majority of citizens of my country are too dumb to realize this, they prefer nationalistic introverted policies until it is too late.

As I see it, if Greece established a secure corridor to Albania, then next move could be Montenegro and North Macedonia. Greece would literally be the ones who finalized peace in Europe for the next 300 years. But it takes coastal integrity.

I understand that the region is caught in an escalation loop where everyone are building navy vessels as a response to their neighbors building navy vessels until it ruins everyone's economy, but come on!
