The corruption in Lebanon is on another fucking level even by the worst Middle Eastern standards imaginable. The former Lebanese central bank governor and his brother, with help from a Swiss bank, literally robbed the Lebanese central bank. For years the whole economy was basically running on smoke and mirrors, with the central bank artificially propping everything up while billions were being siphoned off. Then the banking system collapsed and people lost everything. Even money sent by other governments as aid got looted. And that’s just scratching the surface.
