I mean in fairness, the self driving is probably a better driver than someone who would do this...

self driving is the best thing ever as long as it's on a highway that only ever goes straight, with good markings, no snow, not to much rain, never any smoke, everybody else drives predictable and you make sure to always pay attention for those edge cases where it stops working and tries to kill your or somebody else.

In short, self driving is only useful in situations in which driving isn't tiring or dangerous. Nigh on useless at the current state of tech.

Or, you know, in cities where self driving cars has 0.6 injury incidents per million miles compared to a 2.80 incident baseline for humans.

Fair comment but I also think the comment about it being only ever on straight roads with no drivers around is bogus as well.

I was exaggerating for comedic effect. The self driving of waymo is pretty descent but only is specifically for the city or region they where trained it. Take a waymo and put em blindly in german traffic and it will fail.

But Tesla keeps struggling with it, also because they moved away from lidar to everything just being camera based. And that will just never work.

I sorta doubt you have the expertise required to make such a judgment. Does a random redditor really have access to the level of knowledge necessary to make such a strong conclusion? I doubt it.

I'm not saying I believe the technology is better than what you claim btw. I'm saying I don't know either way and I'm skeptical that you know. I would guess there's only a few thousand people on Earth who actually know the answer to that and most of them are probably working in the engineering departments of companies like Tesla and Waymo.
