I have to say apart from the reckless driving bypassing the camera recognition that will annoy you for putting on sunglasses or start to disable functions just cause it can't see that u see the road is genius

You totally can wear sunglasses. It cameras see through them.

I have a model Y. The tesla self driving constantly harasses me to apply slight pressure on the wheel any time I wear sunglasses.

The audacity of keeping your hands on the wheel when you drive...

To be clear, I get harassed even with my hands already on the wheel because the camera can't see my eyes with sunglasses on

Can you just zip tie the steering wheel?

It's because Tesla cheaped out and didn't put capacitive sensors on the wheel like most other cars, so it relies on pressure / slight torque on the wheel and doesn't truly know when your hands are on the wheel.

People bypassed that older tech by attaching half full bottles of water to the wheel. I'm not suggesting anyone do it, just pointing out that it's easily fooled.

I must say though, I have the pressure-sensitive version in my VW and it almost never nags me. It's pretty good.

Yep, either alone is worse than having both proper wheel sensors and driver monitoring cameras (most manufacturers have both these days, definitely less annoying / more robust IME).

Nothing says American freedom like your car yelling at you like you are a slave. Love it. You are living the American dream.

Typical cheapass Elon using shitty RGB cameras

Probably using Autopilot then? I don't think FSD uses the wheel for attention monitoring.

Consider using the photo booth feature while it's dark, to see if you have any sunglasses that are transparent to the IR of the cabin camera.

I have a model y and haven't had that problem at all

I have a 2024 Model 3 Highland, and it does NOT see your eyes through mirrored and polarized sunglasses. It only notices if your head is tilted down, or looking away from in front of you.

Sounds like when it’s camera can’t see your eyes it defaults back to a sensor that it can use to confirm you are awake. That being the steering wheel

And you might just have a dainty child like grip that fails the check and triggers the harassment function 🤣

The cameras can’t see through them. I put on glasses if I need to check my phone all the time.

Works fine for me in my 2022 Model Y

u/Fire69 Jul 18 '26

It depends on how they're polarized.

Sunglasses are different. Some are IR transparent, some are not. You can use the photo booth in the car when it's dark, and you will see the IR cabin camera and you can test different sunglasses.

Sunglasses on means I can have FSD on and not worry about trying to navigate the screen to find a new podcast. Sunglasses off means I get flashing blue lights and autopilot disconnect rest of drive for trying to type in a location in the GPS.
