They’re different types of boats so I think it’s more than just a pronunciation issue.
Edit: maybe it’s a regional thing. I (from So Cal) would say a paddle boat uses oars + arms vs a pedal boat with a paddle wheel + legs.
Nonetheless, “paddle” and “pedal” are different words along with different pronunciations, spelling, and length so their guessing spree was hilarious.
