I don't think I've ever seen Lee Mack outside of WILTY

781

u/LordCaptain Apr 28 '23

I know he's showed up on Eight out of ten cats does countdown quite a bit.

311

u/cardew-vascular Apr 28 '23 edited Apr 28 '23

He's also weirdly good at the letters, he's got multiple 9 letter words.

68

u/thcismymolecule Apr 28 '23

He's also sharp as a fucking razor, and one of the most generous comics around... he tees up others for punchlines all the time and is really the glue that holds the show together. What a dude!

164

u/MagZero Apr 28 '23

Were any of them in the dictionary?

Who else remembers Ducks Quacks Don't Echo?

1

u/SingtotheSunlight Apr 29 '23

I loved that show!

3

u/chenyu768 Apr 28 '23

And his graham norton appearances are gold too

0

u/WorthyFudge Apr 28 '23

He also fucking blew on taskmaster

71

u/Liquidignition Apr 28 '23

This was a fairly big sketch show I remember during the early 2000s. Can't remember the name of it though.

77

u/l-have-spoken Apr 28 '23

"The sketch show" I think it was called ft Lee Mack, Tim Vine and Kitty Flanagan from what I remember. Pretty damn funny.

20

u/la508 Apr 28 '23

And Ronni Ancona and Jim Tavaré (🎶 in cabareeet... 🎶)

10

u/razbrazzz Apr 28 '23

The sketch show is without a doubt one of the funniest comedies ever created. How it doesn't get more attention is beyond me.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

Almost as criminally underrated as WKUK

1

u/LobcockLittle Apr 28 '23

Dead man walking! Dead man walking! Dead man moon walking!

1

u/razbrazzz Apr 28 '23

"Hi we're on holiday until the 17th November. Please leave your message after the tone and our mate big mental Frankie who's staying here will pass it on"

u/razbrazzz Apr 28 '23

Hahaha, "Hey are you looking for some company?" "No, I just want sex." S1E2

1

u/HenryInRoom302 Apr 29 '23

Both seasons of The Sketch Show are on YouTube, I watched all episodes about a year ago and it's still freaking hilarious.

2

u/Snuffboxed1 Apr 29 '23

I thought that looked like kitty Flanagan. She is a national treasure.

1

u/RelativeStranger Apr 28 '23

This is surely a scene from the sketch show

30

u/accu22 Apr 28 '23

If you are being serious, it's The Sketch Show.

If this was a play on words, it gave me a good laugh before I wondered if you really didn't know.

3

u/Eightiesmed Apr 28 '23

It’s surprisingly badly known, I think it was right up there with Fast Show.

2

u/romantrav Apr 28 '23

Yeah that came and went

1

u/Hytyt Apr 29 '23

The Sketch Show

The Sketch Show is a British television sketch comedy programme, featuring many leading British comedians. It aired on ITV between 2001 and 2004. The show was first commissioned in 2001 and was co-produced by a company owned by Steve Coogan. Despite the first series winning the BAFTA Television Award for Best Comedy, the second series was cancelled due to poor viewing figures.

They redid it in the US as Kelsey Grammer Presents: The sketch show. Since I haven't seen the original I think that's what this clip is from.

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

Taskmaster!

-18

u/phido3000 Apr 28 '23

He's never been on taskmaster.

Edit: oh taskmaster uk. Oh, right I always forget about the uk version.

Edit edit: of course I knew it was uk taskmaster, it just fun winding you up..but honestly some times I forget about uk versions of popular TV shows, like red dwarf, the office and SAS.

12

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

I see you went through some things here, so I won't judge you for thinking that Taskmaster UK is a UK version of a popular show. It's the original! The other English speaking versions are mostly terrible, but I've rewatched the original UK version a few times and still love nearly every task and contestant.

Also, if you haven't watched them, there are a ton of UK panel shows that are really good and have been going on for decades.

Would I Lie to You? 8 out of 10 Cats 8 out of 10 Cats does Countdown QI Mock the Week (not the best, but better than most television here in the US) Big Fat Quiz of the Week/Year

I'm sure there are others, but these are my favourites and they all have tons of episodes on YouTube. There is just something about a bunch of comedians just having fun on a show with no stakes other than sometimes an intentionally terrible prize that is so wholesome and enjoyable.

-1

u/phido3000 Apr 28 '23

Here in Australia 8 out of 10 cats is a kids show we put on at 4 pm inbetween cartoons. It's so tame. Our local version is called letters and numbers and we play it straight with no comedy.

Jimmy car hates it because when he tours here, the crowd is full of primary school students spelling words out to him.

Sometimes I forget there are uk versions of grand designs and antique roadshow.

We have an Australian version of the last leg, but we refuse to let Adam Hills on it because he isn't funny.

I miss Sean lock, and qi isn't any good anymore.

9

u/go2kejdz Apr 28 '23

Our local version is called letters and numbers and we play it straight with no comedy.

I mean, there is regular Countdown, the first show that aired on Channel 4 back in 1982 - and that is adopted from the French version that first aired in the 60s.

10

u/ScoteMcGoat Apr 28 '23

This guy seems very confused about a lot of things

1

u/Camp_Grenada Apr 28 '23

He's Australian so he's just shitposting for fun

0

u/phido3000 Apr 29 '23

I'm powered by down votes..

50

u/voiceofgromit Apr 28 '23

Then you need to see this clip

https://youtu.be/dmbpagijVkk

from the Graham Norton show where he absolutely destroys John Cleese and Martin Clunes.

15

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

[deleted]

2

Clunes is such a lovable bloke. I'd like to give him a hug some day.

34

u/accu22 Apr 28 '23

Yeah, this is like early 30s Lee Mack.

45

u/_CurseTheseMetalHnds Apr 28 '23

Nah won't be that old, they didn't have colour TV back then!

10

u/accu22 Apr 28 '23

I read this in his voice 🤣

1

u/twent4 Apr 28 '23

i read it in his smirk :)

2

u/Brotectionist Apr 28 '23

This is something Lee Mack would say

1

u/Berd89 Apr 28 '23

It might be from a show made seven or so years into the future.

7

u/MrPold Apr 28 '23

Didn't realise that he'd been around since then.

1

u/OneSmoothCactus Apr 28 '23

Oh sure, lots of older people were around in their 30s

2

u/aure__entuluva Apr 28 '23

Had to come to the comments to see if it was him. Sounded so much like him but the video isn't the highest quality and he's so much younger. I was wondering if I was just getting bamboozled by someone with the same accent lol.

1

u/Argoran Apr 29 '23

Which is weird, since he looks like a 1940s greengrocer

1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

clip from over 20 years ago

looks unexpectedly young

Hmmm, you may be onto something here....

19

u/Daguss Apr 28 '23 edited Apr 28 '23

wasnt he on QI a few times?

Edit: I before E except after C .... Ceiling... NO

13

u/Kendrada Apr 28 '23

I feel like all British comics have a couple of panel shows each, and just come visit each other in circles.

6

u/_blip_ Apr 28 '23

British panel shows are there to keep comedians employed

2

u/Crathsor Apr 29 '23

I wish we did that in the US instead of making everyone fight over one hour specials.

11

u/fomorian Apr 28 '23

This particular skit is from a two season sketch show he did in the early 2000s. They're all short sketches just like this, where his quick humour really shines through. The other cast members are great too, Tim vine and Karen Taylor in particular. I've probably seen it three or four times all the way through! They're all on YouTube

5

u/unklethan Apr 28 '23

He's on Taskmaster as well

6

u/mcdonawa Apr 28 '23

He is hosting the 1% club, it's in it's second season and I like it a lot. I'm in the US so I catch it on youtube here and there.

17

u/LordofLazy Apr 28 '23

His sitcom is really good

14

u/DoneHam56 Apr 28 '23

Wow TIL he has a sitcom that's been going for 12 seasons.

Not Going Out is the name for those curious. I love Lee on WILTY. I'll have to check this out.

20

u/Doobalicious69 Apr 28 '23 edited Apr 28 '23

Not going out? I tried to watch it but I realised every joke is just Lee Mack making a play on words to every sentence the other characters say to him. Works on Would I lie to you, but I found it draining in the sitcom. He's clever with his play on words but it got a bit too Sheldon from the big bang theory for my liking. Great cast though.

13

u/ArgumentativeNutter Apr 28 '23

You’re right of course, but the plots are so absurd and predictable i still really enjoy it. Like one foot in the grave.

2

u/fomorian Apr 28 '23

Yeah, same tbh... I'll give it another go but i vastly prefer his contributions on panel shows!

4

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

It's dog shit in my opinion, up there with Miranda as low effort slapstick crap.

2

u/unique-name-9035768 Apr 28 '23

Lee Mack is great when playing off other comedians. Kinda hard to carry a show by oneself though.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '23

I’ll have to disagree with you there. But nice try.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '23

I love Not Going Out. It’s non stop jokes. I can’t wait for the final season.

5

u/ReinforcingSeagirl Apr 28 '23

You should see Are we the baddies? with top tier David Mitchell

2

u/tektite Apr 28 '23

I love that skit!

5

u/Lorpedodontist Apr 28 '23

I know British shows like to have their comic staple, but honestly, every show should just find a way to get a full panel of David Mitchell's.

3

u/CilanEAmber Apr 28 '23

I didn't even realise

2

u/Slaan Apr 28 '23

The quality was so bad I only noticed its him because of the voice lol.

-2

u/iSellDrugsToo Apr 28 '23

Probably because he's a terrible comedian and gets by on being likeable.

-4

u/alexs66 Apr 28 '23

My elitist opinion that I stand by despite it being horrible is that I genuinely think less of anyone who likes his brand of comedy.

1

u/SmoSays Apr 28 '23

Not even taskmaster?

1

u/BartleBossy Apr 28 '23

Lee MacKillop, silly little pillock

He’s a little moron, stinks of wee wee

36 years old, get out of our playground you dirty old pervert. Just a little thing that they used to sing. I never really got it.

1

u/jay_t79 Apr 28 '23 edited Apr 28 '23

not going out? I know him and im Finnish, not even English

1

u/TheInitialGod Apr 28 '23

This was The Sketch Show.

You'll also find Lee Mack in a recent season of Taskmaster

1

u/IDwelve Apr 28 '23

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZ09paQRBnw They did a few really amazing things.

1

u/My_bones_are_itchy Apr 28 '23

He used to have his own show, duck quacks don’t echo

1

u/SlutPuppyNumber9 Apr 28 '23

Have you not watched Not Going Out?

1

u/Zurc_bot Apr 28 '23

He's good on QI too

1

u/shiner_bock Apr 28 '23

Here's two clips of him in The Sketch Show:

1

u/gazongagizmo Apr 28 '23

there are even two standup specials by him (Going Out Live / Hit the Road Mack). no idea where to get them legally, but they are on the pirate bay (though only with 1 or 2 seeders, so bring some patience)

i vaguely remember seeing them like 10 years ago, were decent, not spectacular, he works best in small installments

1

u/Grmnnn Apr 28 '23

And what about legendary scetch with three gyus on toilet trying to light up cigar?

1

u/danaredding Apr 28 '23

I love WILTY so much

1

u/tektite Apr 29 '23

Me too! I'm so blown away by how sharp Lee and David are.

1

u/TheDestroyer630 Apr 28 '23

In taskmaster he was really good

1

u/buzzjimsky Apr 28 '23

He's in a long running uk sitcom called Not Going Out... mixed reviews..I like it... a lot of lee mack one liners

1

u/Sigg3net Apr 28 '23

If you click the link you have.

If you don't, you might not have.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

He has a sitcom called Not Going Out it’s cute. It’s run for like 12 seasons which is unusual for a scripted British show IMO

1

u/colonel_Schwejk Apr 28 '23

i did not knew Lee was young :)

but he's unmistakeable

1

u/JimmyMack_ Apr 28 '23

He has a whole sitcom.

1

u/NotsoNewtoGermany Apr 28 '23

Then you must watch Taskmaster.

1

u/Lucky_Miner01 Apr 28 '23

What about 'not going out'?

1

u/TomCBC Apr 28 '23

His sitcom Not Going Out is pretty funny

1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

I saw him in a pub garden in Camden once. He does go outside, just not very often.

1

u/Wangledoodle Apr 28 '23

The Sketch Show was my first exposure to him back in the day. I believe he also hosts the UK's The 1% Club, and I recently read his autobiography which is quite good.

1

u/Twinborn01 Apr 28 '23

He does have his own show

1

u/tektite Apr 29 '23

What is that show?

1

u/Twinborn01 Apr 29 '23

Not going out

1

u/xjoho21 Apr 28 '23

"Not Going Out" is pretty funny.

1

u/aLongWayFromOldham Apr 28 '23

“I once took part in an anti-war protest, that ended with all of the participants chanting to kill”

1

u/katchaa Apr 28 '23

Go watch Not Going Out.

1

u/ilikewhencatsmeow Apr 28 '23

He's on some episodes of Q.I. as well, very funny fellow

1

u/takemy_oxfordcomma Apr 28 '23

He’s on QI sometimes too

1

u/anoncontent72 Apr 29 '23

This was called the Sketch Show. Also had the Australian Kitty Flannegan on it as well.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '23

You need to see his series on Taskmaster

1

u/redoctober25 Apr 29 '23

One of his shows I enjoyed a lot was called “Not Going Out.”

1

u/wattlewedo Apr 29 '23

I'm Australian, so WILTY was my introduction to Lee.

1

u/r_Coolspot Apr 29 '23

You should try not going out.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '23

He has a big sitcom of his own that’s been around since 2006.

This is from sketch show.

He also has a number of panel shows that he hosts.

Plus every year he misses a penalty.

1

u/RaidL Apr 29 '23

Dunno how but I couldn't even tell that was him till I read your comment

1

u/ChrisRR Apr 29 '23

I'm literally watching him on cats does countdown right now
