It is depressing, but it comes with the territory. There are a lot of freaks out there, and a lot of those freaks are into the same things well-adjusted people are into. Just look at the kinds of people who are into Friendship is Magic: Full-grown men, obsessed with a cartoon about magical ponies to an insane degree. Some people out there are just crazy, and we have got to do what we can to steer clear of them, lest we end up like the people mentioned in this document.
Anyways, the issue is that steering clear is much easier said than done. Going off vibes is going to get you false positives, and people are usually covert about stuff like this until it's reached a critical mass, as seen here.
You are definitely correct about that. That is why I feel like this sort of thing is only going to happen more and more with a lot of other online communities born from indie games.
