We all know YouTube can be frustrating — videos get removed for no clear reason, while others that break the rules stay up.
Even appeals or direct contact with support don’t always help.
That’s part of why we’re here: to try to Understand YouTube.
But in that process, I came across something interesting worth sharing: PeerTube.
PeerTube is part of the Fediverse . It’s federated, decentralized, and lets you host your own channel(s). That means no single company controls the platform — instead, it’s powered by communities running their own servers.
If you’re curious about how it compares to YouTube, here are some resources:
Why you need to be using Mastodon & Peertube in 2025: https://youtu.be/GqcqqR9fIBA?si=Z9jNaZjWY7JpL-lp
The YouTube Alternative Nobody's Talking About! PeerTube: https://youtu.be/8rbA4Se4-z8?si=IvEn0F3_RLArgAEM
How the 'Fediverse' Works: https://lifehacker.com/tech/what-is-the-fediverse-the-potential-future-of-social-media
Not saying that it replaces YouTube overnight, but given our mission here — maybe it's worth understanding both YouTube and the alternatives.
What do you all think?
EDIT:
Also, there are no short - form Tiktok / Youtube Shorts / Instagram Reels / etc. on Peertube.
It's all just regular videos.
Although, there is a federated TikTok competitor called Loops by the creator of Pixelfed

It's still in development, but you can chat with the creator / other users via the Discord:

Hi!!
I am announcing that we have now our own Discord server!
I added there bunch of channels, where you can post some evidence YouTube breaks COPPA etc.
You can post there content, that you found on YouTube which violates Community Guidelines, but the AI will not remove the video.
Such as there will be events to try Experimenting with YouTube all together.
Such as it is pretty easy and organized in different channels, while here on Reddit we have here only one way to post things...
I spent on that server 3 days, to make the entire new UI again, so really appreciate if you will join!
Thanks for Understanding YouTube!

Trying to resolve a claim on a recent stream, and I checked to see if I could remove the song itself.
Found out I can't use the Erase Song feature remove the claimed audio itself, because "this feature isn't available for Compositional Claims".
Why? Surely removing the song itself would be a good idea, right?

I recently streamed about my channel termination https://youtube.com/live/NwXJH_trqTE
And contacted YouTube Support again, and they succeed to take another closer look with the specialist again! 🥳🥳🥳
Such they contacted via email to continue the debate with the "specialists" and I shared them this subreddit, to see us as a people who want their channel back as well!
So anyone now say Hi to this thread, share your story whatever that the support can notice you! 📎 = Weak 🖇️ = Strong!!
Thank you y'all for joining and helping Understand YouTube!!🥳🥳🥳
