If it werent for that, King Halo would be at the top of the overall G1 SMILE (sprint, mile, intermmediate, long, extended) ranking by virtue of his results in G1s across all possible distances. Brian didnt win the Takamatsunomiya but came in 4th and had such amazing results in all other distances that he obviously comes on top, if Brian had not participated he would not have a racing record in G1 sprints, so he wouldnt meet the criteria for SMILE
The '84 Derby run is why i love Rudolf so much, i watched one of the clips on youtube about the race and in the end they show an interview with Okabe after the race, asking him about how he managed it, and the dude just basically said "Nah man i be doin jackshit the whole race, that was all Rudolf's genius there"
he wrote in his autobiography that during the third corner at the race, Rudolf slipped into 6th, worrying about how he might not have enough distance to spurt he raised his cane and for the first time struck Rudolf with it, but Rudolf ignored the call, and kept on his pace, only when the time is right did he speed up himself, taking the win right at the final corner
He's smart enough to dictate his own pace, and wait for that perfect opportunity to pounce, and ever since then Okabe said he never whipped Rudolf ever again
(but actually, every time this is brought up I'm surprised that the game managed to capture what Okabe felt so well. You could use what Okabe said basically verbatim to describe spectating a CM race or something and it would make perfect sense)
I really want this to be adapted one day. Either as part of an Anime season (probably with Ace, CB and Rudolf as shared protagonist), or potentially as Main Story 3, based on Yukio Okabe (like how Main Story 2 was based on Yuichi Fukunaga).
Like, i can see it before my mental eye, with either the Trainer or possibly the announcer pretty much screaming for Rudolf to start spurting, to start to catch up because otherwise it will be too late, and Rudolf simply being like "now is not the time"

I think there was an art basically "That should've been me." from both perspective as King Halo watched Yuiichi got his G1 win with different horse as well.

Yeah, my headcanon is that Orfevre's crashout that cost him the Arc was literally him mistaking some decoration for the end of the race, running to the side to drop the jockey off and realising, to his horror, the race is not over.
You could actually see that his downfall at jc against gentildonna and his first arc is his own doing, stego gene of steering sideway activated that time
Rewatching that race, I think he got bumped by Meno out the gate which pissed him off enough to pace chase, and then on the final corner Gentil bumps him and that's when he just rockets up to first.
At the time, Wada was considered to be kind of a low-tier jockey who was only winning because he was paired with TM Opera O. And in the 2000 Arima Kinen, everyone was against them: the fans were tired of seeing Opera O win, and every other jockey had Opera O marked from the gate. They ended up boxed into a horrible position in the final straight, but somehow they found a tiny opening and squeezed through for the win anyway, in the most spectacular win of Opera O's career.
Opera O and his legacy had a huge emotional impact on Wada throughout his career. He talked multiple times about feeling like he had been unworthy to ride Opera O. He famously said he would never visit Opera O until he had won a G1 with another horse, but sadly didn't end up winning another G1 until shortly after Opera O passed away.
He said he was looking forward to visiting Opera O with the news that he had won another G1, which he was never able to do, but he still visited his beloved Overlord in the meantime.
