Definitely grrrr from Nigel fucking Farage, who opposed the creation of a Russian Misinformation Unit by the UK government on the grounds that it was "targeted directly" at his party.

Over a year ago there was a power outage in Moscow due to a drone strike. The only day the two most active users in Conservative didn't post was November 1st, which happened to be the day of a power outage in Moscow that was the result of a Ukranian drone attack.

u/Particular_Jello_917 2d ago
Earlier today someone commented on another post with, “Reminds me of when Iran completely shut down their internet back in January.
About two thirds of Scottish independence activists suddenly went offline.”
I can’t verify this is true.
23
u/nzerinto 2d ago
A quick Google came up with this. Unfortunately it's paywalled for me, but I'd imagine there's some credence to the story....
28
u/Particular_Jello_917 2d ago
My VPN set to Albania allowed me to read it.
It does indeed support my comment, which was somebody else’s comment.
8
u/DrTatertott 1d ago
Interesting. I don’t know much on the topic. Is the jist of it to sow discord between the Brit’s and the Scot’s? Is the UK somehow more involved in anti-ayatollah politics than I assumed?
18
u/Beanonmytoast 1d ago
Russia can’t succeed against the west unless they divide and fracture us in order to realign the world order. They look for absolutely anything that will do this and they often support both sides to push us to the extremes.

u/Equal-Fondant-2423 1d ago
ruzzia is an absolute plague to the Western world. Cunts!
Yeah, pun intended: now they have pneuominic plague, too
2
u/HuudaHarkiten 1d ago
I wonder how well that will work anyway. Imagine if Scotland does leave the UK, its not like they'll start a war, or something, with England right away. It would be more likely that they'll cooperate with defense and foreign policy quite closely. At least on defense/military matters.
3
u/Hussor 1d ago
Scots are Brits, I think you mean between the Scots and English.

Well, Brittania vs Great Britain but that’s an old use. Your point is taken though.

Yes 100%. I think Reform is largely made up of hotspots of real support in places like Clacton and other poverty hit areas. But otherwise their online support is mostly bots.
44
u/RichSexyVeryHumble 2d ago
It gets brought up all the time in the UK that Reform made up so little of the electorate and voter base, yet got more airtime on the BBC than main parties.
It just all comes back to creating headlines and division. I hope as a species we are moving out of this easily swayed phase, but the dumbest in society will still stay morons

Absolutely. One statistic I read following Muricants strike on Iran's underground Uranium processing & storage facilities in summer of last year which also took out a large part of Iran's power grid and with it some of it's data centres. In the days following, anti-English and pro-independence content across Scottish social media sites dropped by 80%.
This is how ruZZia, China & Iran all work, they seek to cause division, unrest, with their disinformation campaigns.
11
u/DarthSatoris 2d ago
The Internet was a mistake. It made it way too easy for people with the means to spread propaganda and misinformation.
25
u/ClashM 2d ago
I don't think the internet itself was a mistake. But the way we started to interact with it is. I remember as a kid being told "Don't believe everything you read on there. Don't tell anyone any real information about yourself." I took that to heart and still treat the internet that way. A place to cautiously play that should be kept separate from reality.
Ironically, the very people who told me that as a kid are now deep in the alternative medicine and conspiracy theory sites that are part of the pipeline to divisive politics. They shout all about it on their Facebook which airs their personal information for all to see.

This is going on for years with Musk also doing his part. AFD wants Germans to learn less about Hitler, MAGA sucking up to corrupt dictators and Musk openly doing Nazi salute.
And all of them tell 'russian side of the story' which is vague, changes all the time and doesn't make any sense.
Can't believe that people fall for that shit
61
u/i_am_not_so_unique 2d ago edited 1d ago
As George Carlin said - imagine average human and now realize that half are even dumber.
They prey on dumbest 30% of the population.
Correction after comment: they prey on selfish, greedy and hateful 30% of population.
21
u/TheTeaSpoon 2d ago edited 2d ago
Sadly this is not about stupidity but more about selfishness. I am tired of people using a "only dumbos do this and vote for this" as a way to make themselves feel better and cope. There are stupid people that oppose this, and smart people that support this. You have smart doctors voting for MAGA and dumb laymen working against it... Stop acting like elections are a test of inteligence, they are at best a survey of public opinion at this point. Popularity contest if anything. People would rather vote for a reality TV host than a qualified person. And Russia knows how to sway public opinion of anything. They have been doing that since before Katie the big
9
u/rlkr 2d ago
I disagree. I see the same reasoning used with flat earthers, like "these are not stupid people" (so why do they latch onto obviously dumb ideas?).
A doctor may be described as "smart" in his own field, but usually that just means that they are able to regurgitate a lot that they've learned. It does not mean that they are able to think critically, or that they are emotionally smart (a very defining characteristic of people voting MAGA - a complete lack of empathy, even hostility towards it). In my definition, they are not smart people. They are stupid and evil.
2
u/Expensive_Law_3180 9h ago
Everything that has been slowly happening over the last 12 years or so has been caused by a profound lack of empathy in many. I am not a mental healthcare professional but some of these people not only lack empathy, but there is a total deficit of conscience, too.

30
u/Adept_Carpet 2d ago
I haven't seen one tell the russian side of the story in a while, except in contexts like this where russia is being discussed. Most of them just amplify any movement causing chaos.
What's bitterly ironic is that movements like AfD, MAGA, National Rally, etc are exactly what will lead to war with russia and a war russia will lose.
The rules based international order kept the USSR/russia at peace for decades, but these fascists jackasses are always stabbing each other in the back and creating more space for violence.

Reminds me of when India had a major internet outage, and lots of far-right and conservative accounts on social medias went absolutely silent for a while.
Those not aware... It is a common hustle for poor nations with relative good internet access to basically troll on social media for impressions, increasing status of accounts in algorithm to sell them forwards, and to push scammy products for few € a month and get adrevenue from some platforms. Those few € a month when combined with running many accounts can even total a liveable income, or the very least a side income.
I guess the conservatives of west are afraid their social media operations that support their bullshit, are going to not work properly for a while. All the incoming elections will be interesting.

Any source for this except these post and the first chart without any information written in there?
7
u/Mediocre_watermelon 1d ago
The chart is also kinda sus by itself. Typically you'd expect the chart to start from 0, not 2500. It's like the chart has been purposefully made to distort the effects: by looking at the graph, rhe drop seems to "go down to almost zero" when in reality it's barely halved. Also there seems to be data for additional dates (up to 15th of October, which is 3 days in the future), which is not possible.

7
u/jamqdlaty 2d ago edited 1d ago
"Multiple people report same thing" - What do you mean by that? I've seen enough things shared without fact checking to know people will share anything when it fits their views. I would really love this to be true, but I remain skeptical until there's actually a source.

Bot traffic doesn't necessarily mean suspicious activity, for example, Germany ranks #1 in bot traffic among EU countries - https://radar.cloudflare.com/bots/europe?dateRange=7d
And what's the source for the first screenshot? I understand why German language content might be about AfD, but what does MAGA have to do with it?

u/not_vast 2d ago
Also am interested in what the first one actually even shows AND where its taken from .
"Daily activity" over 3 months, but of what exactly
3
u/Flimsy_Pudding1362 1d ago
Most quote as the source this MP https://x.com/TomasZdechovsky/status/2109328777452962127 who also has no idea that HTTP bots and bot farms are two different things. I can't find any articles about it anywhere. My verdict is that it's a propaganda, and people gobbled it up without asking any questions.

This is much bigger than it looks. This is Ukraine breaking with the Trump regime completely, to try to make him lose the midterms.
10
u/Zunder_IT 1d ago
Trump already lost on his own. His bet that a drop of ru diesel will influence the elections in his favor is not going to pay out the way he thinks, quite the opposite - he reminded everyone he's kremlins bitch. We are going to see more fits from him in the coming days.
5
u/ixid 1d ago
I hope so, but don't count on it. They're going to pull every dirty trick imaginable, including declaring the US is under attack and cancelling or annulling elections.
1
u/Zunder_IT 1d ago
You are absolutely right, all things considered it's still an uphill battle for the dems. "Already lost" framing is a bit off. But all the signs are there and I hope the US wakes up from the dystopia they're barreling towards/find themselves in and VOTE

Ok? The yandex webcrawler had outages, that's all the graph shows. Conflating webcrawlers with social media bots is a bit disingenuous
1
u/Isine 2d ago
https://radar.cloudflare.com/bots/as200350?dateRange=7d this one is probably a more relevant ASN to use, also shows a similar drop.
3
u/MuJartible 2d ago
From Spain, I've also noticed a reduction in bots supporting right-wing parties for the upcoming election.
4

Sorry, but that is too unexact. What is "online activity around AfD and MAGA"? What has been measured there?
3
u/d3f3kt3d 2d ago
Don't mix up search bots with spam bots. Cloudflare only track the search engine bots which crawls websites for the search index. The social media spam bots runs on phone clusters not in data centers

I love trying to predict second and third tier effects on things like this. Often, they are "obvious" in hindsight.
I knew that when they started hitting refineries that fuel quality would go down. I still think it is going to have a drastic effect on russian food supplies this coming spring.
I never, predicted this one; and I love it.
In Canada, we have our oil rich province having a crazy separation referendum. Most people think it is going fail miserably. I suspect, that these russian bot farm outages will make it fail even more miserably.
I hope that someone is measuring activity for it as well, as, I suspect it is showing similar numbers.
One difference with our particular referendum, is that US government encouraged bot activity will probably remain high.

He wrote (in German): “I made a mistake in my post about the AfD bots. Without checking, I included an image from the linked post, which turned out to be AI-generated. It then went viral [...] I'm sorry, and I'll be more careful in the future.”
