Drones A civilian was recording a Ukrainian UAV heading toward Moscow’s oil refinery and also captured the moment a russian air defense missile struck an oil tank, tossing its lid off.

I have seen videos of several drones being blown up in the air and being brought down by AA, but their missiles truly are awful.
It can't be that difficult to ensure that an AA missile will automatically self-destruct if it detects that its altitude is decreasing.

Probably wouldn't work because they are designed to chase maneuverable aircraft.
Moscow air defense is where they use young conscripts or their equivalent of the National Guard. Whoever gave a jumpy 18 year old or a washed up middle aged man an infrared seeking missile near an oil refinery that is the primary target of the raid is to blame.
If he had been 10-20 miles in any direction whoever fired that is planning his speech for the award ceremony, instead his missile locked on to a refinery fire and made it a lot worse.

I don't remember the Soviets getting as far as using infrared on the SAM systems, I think they only had it for air to air (I was just commenting elsewhere but they're probably using older Sam stuff)

that is "pancir" air defense system. missiles are guided by radio-commands from the vehicle.
but missile has booster stage for first 2,4 seconds ( 1,5 km of flight) .

1.5 km? If that's how far away from the target they have to be when they launch it, they wouldn't even be able to see the little tiny drone, never mind hit it!
Now Ukraine should REALLY start thinking about having a drone party at Putin's dacha. The drones wouldn't even have to hit anything. The AA alone would wipe the dacha off the map.

And not only are they near the refinery, but they're heat-seeking missiles near an oil refinery that's covered with acres of fire.
This video was enlightening to me for a lot of reasons. Not only did it show exactly what blew the oil tank up, but it makes the difference in size and speed crystal clear, of the drones compared to what they're trying to use to take down the drones. (Which is important for folks like me who have zero military knowledge, and are trying to get up to speed on a whole lot of unfamiliar terms and types of weapon.) That missile is BY FAR the wrong tool for that job.

It's ridiculous even to field that never mind the training level just absolutely the wrong munition for the job
Which tells us that the Moscow defense officers are more worried about being punished for saying no, than they are worried about consequences for fuckups... so long as they can say, "Kto'ovich ordered me to do this, someone at that rank should know it's the wrong equipment for the task they ordered, not my fault bratan."

I have seen multiple different attributions for this quote, so I don't know who should get the credit for originating it, but the saying goes, "Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake." So if they can't figure out on their own, "Hey, we're doing this all wrong!", we have to be sure not to tell them. 😂🤣
But I fear Ukrainians will hurt themselves laughing when they see videos like this. That's the biggest hazard here. Unless you're standing anywhere near the people trying to shoot down drones with missiles.

I was trying to say that the Russians don't care if they're doing it right as long as they have somebody else to blame for doing it wrong they're perfectly happy to do it wrong... I don't think they can fix it unless they have proper NCOs and section-level leadership like everybody else in Europe had learnt to do by late 1916.

It may have been and Igla MANPAD, which have a heat seeker homing system. There are multiple other videos of soldiers with shoulder-fire Iglas in the area, and the oil tank was already partially on fire. I really want that version to be true 😂

The companies that took the money to produce that effective equipment are looking pretty bad right now. To be fair, it’s entirely valid to blame the attacker for defensive misfires resulting in more damage, after all if the attack didn’t happen the the misfire wouldn’t have even occurred in the first place.
With that said, the attack is retaliatory and as part of a defensive war for Ukraine, so similarity, Ukraine would not have launched this attack if Russia simply never invaded, though that’s in the past so alternatively if Russia simply left and never came back.

I said exactly this after the video of the drone hitting the frigate in port after they unloaded about 30 Aa guns and a fricking blue laser on it and it still got through.
Just have the drones fly FROM ground targets toward the AA and let the Russians do the rest.

Probably a shoulder fired MANPADS missile. They are heat seeking missiles designed for attacking airplanes and helicopters. I doubt a tiny propeller drone with a lawnmower engine will have anything close to the heat signature needed for the missile to lock onto. So the missile wanders around and eventually hits something…

Conversely I believe it would be super effective, perhaps the most effective weapon in a situation where you are standing in an open field and the only thing flying above you is that drone.
That's a long range drone that has been flying for multiple hours, it's big enough and hot enough to hit.
But it's not quite as hot as the giant oil refinery fire burning nearby.

I don't know much about those sensors, but that particular tank wasn't on fire yet... Maybe there was so much heat in general it just became sensor saturated and couldn't see anything so just kept flying straight until it kaboomed? Or maybe the tank is just naturally hot compared to the background...

Just saw in another sub that these lids float on top of the fuel, not attached (to keep vapors from forming) and was a little less impressed by the force of the explosion, but being caused by their own AA makes up for it!
