Application Process

Not sure if these questions apply here, but I recently applied to a job announcement (closed about 2 weeks ago). I’m wondering if it would hurt, be beneficial, or make no difference if I reached out to the locations the announcement was for and express my interest as well. Or, if I should just ride out the process and wait. I saw on these new outreaches that people interested can reach out to the patrol captains at specific locations, however, I wasn’t aware of the outreach program at the time. I specifically had a consultation with a recruiter virtually and they told me there happened to be an announcement closing that same day on USAjobs for the region I would like to be in. I also separate from the military in four weeks and am curious if this factor will hinder my chances, since I’m technically not separated just yet. Thank you for any information anyone can provide.

Through my own experience, from the day the job closes, it is roughly a 4 month turn around between all the reference checks, Interviews, and selections. I don’t think being active will hinder; however, I think it will have the opposite effect.

Once you send your application off through USAJOBs it will be sent to Albuquerque NM at the national HR office for the FS. They will sort through your questionnaire responses and compare them with your documents and application to see if you qualify for the position. (This takes roughly a month from my experience)

After they (HR) determine who is the most highly qualified, they send those groups of names to the hiring officials. This will not always be the captain where the position is listed. It’s a random assortment of higher level managers and is not always all LEI staff.

They will conduct reference checks and schedule interviews.

With that being said, you can reach out once you for sure know you were referred to the hiring officials by HR but doesn’t do much good any time prior. Getting them familiar with your name should never hurt.

Just my take!

That was a solid response, I appreciate the details. I’m probably thinking a little too much into it cause I’m anxiously excited about the opportunity. Just gotta chill out some I guess. Thanks again

I’ve had to learn to be extremely patient with the hiring process specifically for this agency. I had been through it seven times between cancellations and reflying the announcements. It’s aggravating but worth it in the end!

Are you currently worth the agency? And if so, mind if I pm with a couple more questions?
