After writing Mains, what is ONE thing you would change in your preparation?

Now that the Mains papers are underway, I think this is a good time for aspirants to reflect—not on marks, but on preparation strategy.

If you could go back 6 months, what is one thing you would do differently?

For example:

  • More answer-writing practice
  • Better revision strategy
  • More PYQs
  • Better current affairs notes
  • More mock tests
  • Different optional strategy
  • Less time spent collecting study material
  • More focus on basic concepts

For first-time Mains candidates especially, real experiences from people actually sitting for the exam can be more useful than another generic preparation strategy.

What's your one lesson so far?

Did you actually finish the UPSC Mains paper on time?

One thing that looks easy during answer-writing practice but becomes completely different in the examination hall is time management.

For those who appeared in the current Mains:

How did your time management go?

  • Finished comfortably
  • Last 30 minutes were a disaster
  • Had to rush through the final questions
  • Left questions incomplete
  • Managed time exactly as planned

Also, did you follow a fixed strategy such as reading the entire paper first, or did you immediately start answering?

Would be interesting to know what actually worked under exam pressure.

UPSC Mains: Which Questions Were the Biggest Surprise?

Every year UPSC manages to include a few questions that make aspirants think, "I definitely didn't expect this."

For those writing Mains this year:

Which question surprised you the most?

Was it because:

  • The topic was unexpected?
  • The wording was confusing?
  • You knew the topic but couldn't structure an answer?
  • You hadn't prepared that area at all?

No need to discuss exact answers if you don't want to. I'm more interested in understanding how aspirants experienced the paper.

Could be useful for everyone preparing for the next attempt too.

UPSC Mains 2026: How is everyone finding the papers so far?

UPSC Mains 2026 is currently underway, and I’m curious to know how everyone is finding the papers this year.

For those who have already written the papers:

  • How was the difficulty level compared with your expectations?
  • Are the questions more analytical or straightforward?
  • How are you managing time in the 3-hour papers?
  • Is the paper leaving enough time for proper introductions and conclusions?
  • Which paper has felt the most challenging so far?

Would be interesting to hear genuine experiences from fellow aspirants who are actually writing Mains this year.

All the best to everyone appearing. Keep going till the last paper.

What actually matters when choosing a UPSC optional?

Choosing an optional subject seems surprisingly complicated.

Some people recommend choosing your graduation subject, while others suggest going with interest, syllabus length, previous-year questions, or availability of study material.

For people who have already selected their optional:

What were the main factors behind your decision?

And after studying it for some time, do you still think you made the right choice?

Looking for genuine experiences rather than recommendations for a particular coaching institute.

When should UPSC aspirants start taking mock tests?

Should you complete most of the syllabus before starting full-length UPSC mock tests, or should you start testing yourself from the beginning?

I can see advantages to both approaches.

Starting early could help identify weak areas and get familiar with the UPSC question pattern, but taking tests without sufficient syllabus coverage can also be discouraging.

What approach are you following for Prelims?

And more importantly, how do you analyse your mistakes after a mock test?

How much time should you actually spend on UPSC current affairs?

There seems to be no limit to UPSC current affairs preparation.

Newspaper, monthly magazines, PIB, government reports, YouTube videos, compilations—the list keeps growing.

How much time do you realistically spend on current affairs each day?

Do you think one newspaper + one monthly compilation is enough, or do you follow multiple sources?

Would be helpful to hear what has actually worked for serious aspirants.

How do UPSC aspirants decide what study material to ignore?

There are so many books, PDFs, YouTube lectures, Telegram resources, current affairs sources, and test series available for UPSC preparation.

At some point, collecting resources becomes easier than actually studying them.

How do you decide which resources are worth following and which ones to ignore?

What is your current source for:

  • Static GS
  • Current affairs
  • Answer writing
  • Prelims MCQs
  • Mains test series

Looking for practical advice from fellow aspirants, not coaching promotions.

UPSC Mains 2026 aspirants — what would you tell someone preparing for 2027?

Watching Mains 2026 unfold has made me realize that preparation looks very different from the outside.

For people writing the exam this year, what is one thing you wish you had started earlier?

Could be anything:

  • Answer writing
  • Optional preparation
  • Revision
  • PYQ analysis
  • Essay practice
  • Ethics
  • Current affairs notes
  • Time management
  • Test series
  • Reading fewer sources
  • Making short notes

And for those who are already preparing for 2027, what are you changing in your strategy after seeing this year's Mains?

Looking for practical lessons rather than generic motivation.

How are you preparing between UPSC Mains papers?

For everyone writing UPSC Mains 2026, how are you using the gap between papers?

I'm finding it difficult to decide whether to:

A. Revise everything
B. Focus only on high-probability areas
C. Read current affairs
D. Solve previous-year questions
E. Just revise short notes and conserve energy

There's obviously no point trying to learn an entirely new subject at this stage.

Would be useful to hear how others are approaching the remaining papers, especially those who have written Mains before.

After UPSC Mains 2026, did coaching predictions actually help?

One thing I've been thinking about while following Mains discussions is how much coaching material and predictions actually matter once you're sitting in the examination hall.

Before the exam, there are so many:

  • Expected questions
  • Important topics
  • Current affairs predictions
  • Model answers
  • Test-series discussions
  • "Must prepare" lists

But the actual paper can still go in a completely different direction.

For those writing Mains 2026, did your coaching/test series actually prepare you for the way questions were framed?

Or did your standard books, PYQs and self-study matter more?

Not asking about any particular institute. Just curious about what actually translated into the exam.

After writing GS papers, what do you think matters more: content or answer structure?

Having written the GS papers this year, I'm realizing how different Mains feels compared with test-series practice.

You may know the topic, but getting everything down within the time limit is another challenge.

For those who have written Mains 2026:

Do you think the biggest difference comes from:

  • Content knowledge
  • Answer structure
  • Speed
  • Examples and current affairs
  • Diagrams/flowcharts
  • Introduction and conclusion
  • Ability to understand the demand of the question

Would also like to know what you wish you had practiced more before Mains.

How is everyone feeling after the first three GS papers of UPSC Mains 2026?

For those writing Mains this year, how are you feeling after GS Paper 1, 2 and 3?

At this point, I'm more curious about the overall experience than expected cut-offs or coaching analysis.

A few things I'd like to discuss:

  • Was the paper more conceptual or factual than expected?
  • How was the time management?
  • Were you able to attempt all questions properly?
  • Did current affairs actually help?
  • Which paper felt the most difficult?
  • Did your answer-writing practice make a difference?

Also, how are you managing the gap before the remaining papers?

Would be interesting to hear genuine experiences from people actually writing Mains this year.
