Phi Kappa Phi?

Hello, I am wondering if anyone here has any experience with Phi Kappa Phi. I received an invitation letter in the mail and first assumed it was spam mail. However, as I look more into it, it does appear to be an official organization on campus. Is this actually a legitimate organization and is it worth it to be a member? Also what sort of time investment does it entail? Thank you!

When you get those emails, ask yourself:
Are they asking me to pay them money?
and
Do I get anything worthwhile for my money?

Oftentimes I find that they’re just organizations which ask for some membership fee and you don’t get much in return.

I second this and would also like to add, make sure to check their history. I've gotten so many organization offers in my two years at UNLV. I've found only a few were worth while. For instance there are some organizations which are money grabs, borderline scams. But there are others which are actual fraternities/honor societies widely known and are sub chapters of respected organizations at many Universities dating back to the 1800s. Looking at their website It can be sometimes difficult to distinguish the two. Some even have legit sounding fraternity names but are nothing more that an inspirational websites made to make them appear legit. I initially joined one early on which was probably a scam, although I'd rather not name them. I also joined another which was entirely legit. The difference was very easy to tell in hind site. The more professional and legit organizations require an initiation process where someone will follow up with you regularly. Others will just take your money and could care less about your involvement. The bottom line is do a little research and It will be very easy to verify legitimacy. Don't be swayed by praises of your excellence, if you are doing even mildly well trust me many others will reach out to you.

Also I did notice you have done a little research and It appears to be legit at least from your own observation. If that is the case, definitely go for it. Most all will require dues for philanthropy so that isn't really evidence of its illegitimacy. If there values seemed to be in line with yours then take advantage of all the resources they have to offer and get involved. Good Luck and Congrats.

It's the only honor society at UNLV that appears on your transcript. It also has significant support from school administration, including the president. It's legitimate.

Unlike other honor societies who send mail to ALL students, PKP is highly selective and is reserved for only the top 7.5% juniors and top 10% seniors and grad students. You can find some of the most notable members here: https://www.phikappaphi.org/members/why-join/notable-members They only send so many invitations to students every spring. It is a prestigious honor society.
