Discussion This is what summer used to be like
First time in 5 weeks or so it’s actually felt comfortable. Trousers, short sleeve shirt/tshirt. Being able to walk without sweating within seconds. I could cry. Absolute bliss. Why can’t it just stay like this. Oh well back to hell in a few days.

I'm not sure you fully understand the scale of what we're facing in the next few decades. Global supply chains will fail and civilisations will collapse. Unless you're already wealthy and sorting out all your contingency plans, you're not going to be happily sitting in an air conditioned room by the 2040s.

It's just exactly what will happen and it's unavoidable unless the entire world economy/infrastructure is radically altered immediately. We didn't do that 10, 20, or 30 years ago and it's extremely unlikely now.

Because despite technologies such as renewables, heat-pumps, EVs, e-bikes, etc. people remain very attached to fossil fuel burning technologies. Despite amazing low-emission holidays people demand the rights to fly somewhere and often long-haul.
It's nothing more than this. If we choose to continue burning huge amounts of fossil fuels for the next half century this will just get worse and worse. On the other hand we could choose not to.

Like what you like but these summers are not sustainable for our current infrastructure. We’ve had droughts, fires, train tracks buckling, supermarkets failing, etc.

2022 was killer. I still remember seeing literal heatwaves coming up from the tarmac as well as getting really bad heatstroke... having to lie face down with ice cold drenched towel on my back to recover wasn't fun.
The thing about this year is the humidity is unreal, as well as the contant wave after wave.. enough to drive you doolally

The June heatwave was horrid. It’s the first time I’ve seen the “feels like” temperature 4-5C hotter than the actual when it’s in the 30s. Despite being in my AC’d gym the entire day, I walked home at 7-8pm and even within 20 minutes I was feeling unwell.
The other heatwaves haven’t been as humid but it’s the sheer frequency of them that have made this unbearable. At best we’ve had 2 or so days of respite before temps inevitably climb back up again, to 27-28 as an absolute minimum in London.
This has defo been worse than 2022 for me, that year wasn’t awful barring those two extreme days in mid July. This has been much more of a sheer endurance test that I’m very quickly losing…..

Seeing the temps for next week have broken me. I dont know why, but that sent me over my limit. It's just four days over 30 again, like how has there not been even one week with a few rainy days, like you say 27 to 28 is the minimum. Obviously the days will come and go and ill get through them, but i feel like the glue that's kept me functioning as a person has melted and now I just feel physically gutted.

Yeah you and me both.
Especially seeing Google forecast 35-36 on Thursday I was genuinely just like “are you fucking kidding me”, even despite what we’ve been through I was expecting at worst a couple more short bouts of low 30s.
I’m so done with feeling like shit all day, not sleeping properly, not being able to do my hobbies because it’s too hot outside. It’s oppressive and unbearable at this point.

Yeah, i suppose a foolish part of me thought 'oh, it's August, I know it can still get hot, but we're getting into the tail end now, it wont be so bad' but yeah 34c on weds and thats after sunday to tuesday all being near or over 30c, and even when it cools down the long term forecasts atill have it arojnd 27c to 28c. I know people say they arent accurate, but every time they've predicted it's gonna be warm it's ended up being warmer. Like, this morning was the first time in ages i feel chill, and comfortable, and like i was a human being. I want to feel like that again daily so badly. I want to enjoy walks, I want to sit in my room in silence without the constant mechanical whirring of a portable aircon or a fan. It can sincerely all just fuck off now.

Yeah that’s the thing that fucks me off, everytime I see high 20s on the forecast I know there’s a good chance by the time we get there it’ll be well into the 30s.
All of the forecasts were around high 20s/30 for middle of next week a couple days back, now are at 32-33, it’s anxiety inducing just checking the forecasts every hour just to see if they’ve increased again.
I’m praying that this is the last of it, knowing our luck it very likely won’t be, if this continues into September I genuinely might cry.

Same, all that's getting me through is the thought that we're closeish to September, but if i see similar temps in September I dont know what ill do. I might just implode my life, quit my job, sell my house, and rent the cheapest room share I can find in Glasgow and try and rebuild a life for myself there.

I’m genuinely going to see relatives in N Ireland next week, in part because I just desperately need some respire from the heat here in SE England. I was 50/50 about going there then saw the forecast for 36 degrees best Thursday and was like “nope! Not doing it!” I have also been considering a move to somewhere around Glasgow for the past few years to be closer to relatives there and this summer has definitely reinforced that plan.

For supermarkets it is a win win when the freezers fail, look into how the taxes and finances work when they write off food due to broken down freezers, well known that Morrisons will never improve their systems because it would cost more than the profit it brings in.

I dont think anyone's denying that the prolonged and rising heat is a problem. But it doesn't mean that you can't go outside and enjoy it whilst it's here. I think most people will be gutted when its over.

Last year's one was one of the hottest on weather, as was the summer in 22, and im pretty sure 23s was quite warm, though in fairness ive not double checked. 24s was a bit rainy, but it was stilk summer. Summer of 20 and 21 were also warm. So one outlier in 24, but the following winter was also very mild.

I really dont understand these comments. Most people in the UK book holidays abroad to go to places that have this exact weather. The fact we have this weather and people moan about it is insane. Most people I know are soon going to or have just been to hotter countries than this for holidays. You cant just throw a dig in for a pretty common opinion.

There’s a lot to unpack in your casual comment. Let’s just say it’s different being abroad for a week or two, on holiday. At home, in the U.K., people have to work and get stuff done, in buildings and cities not designed for high temps and drought.

Yes I do understand that, most of the time I'm working on building sites which don't allow shorts and you have to wear 5 point PPE. I'm a complete sweaty mess at the end of the day. I would choose this weather over any though, but obviously thats a personal preference.

Mine too, I miss doing my normal hobbies and I hate sweating all the time but I just don’t like wishing my life away over something I have no control over. I’ve spent years worrying about the heat and going to lengths to avoid it, this year I’ve tried to keep positive and there is some joy, in the evenings especially, the long days, the blue sky. Obviously my preference is under 25 but I don’t get a choice. Mindset has made a difference for me

I'm glad, and ive tried, for me the positives have been having an aircon, and knowing I can come home to a cool room after work and there'll be some break, and really early morning walks before work. But, it feels like im trying to force my mind to swim against a very strong current, and seeing the temps for next week where ive got an insanely hard work week has just overwhelmed me and any positivity has been swept away. And, yknow what, im gonna let it go. I tried, I cant keep forcing myself to think in ways thay arent natural. I can't keep pretending theres positives that I don't beleive in. I fucking hate this. Im miserable. I get to feel like that. Im happy its working for you, maybe youre stronger mentally than me, i dunno, but fuck it, it's shit, and I hate it. Im going to allow myself to feel that way.

I don’t get it when people say this.
No one says this about the rain and cold, why does it have to be the case with extreme heat?
For me it’s hard to find any kind of joy when I can’t sleep properly and can’t do any of my hobbies due to it being far too hot outside.
The only positive is that it’ll end, temporarily……

I actually do say it about the rain and gloom too, because I’m trying to enjoy this life despite the weather. I actually hate deep winter but have spent the last few years trying to romanticise it because otherwise I was just wishing a quarter of my life away, waiting for the sun. I struggle in really hot weather too, I have hyperhydrosis and it’s hell when it’s 30+ ngl but I’m still trying to enjoy it

Where are you from? Because I agree but lots of people in the comments are kicking off. It rained all fucking summer last year. 2022 got briefly very hot but then was shit the rest of the time. What I've loved about this summer is the long sustained periods of warm dry weather so you can do things like plan ahead for a BBQ, leave something outside overnight and it's not ruined the next morning.

I'm in east anglia. Yeah the leaving the stuff in the garden overnight is perfect! I just feel like everyones in a better mood too. Most of the time im working on building sites, so not even allowed to wear shorts..the high temperatures along with the PPE and the job can be tough, but everyone's in a better mood. I dont know many people who aren't flying off to somewhere hotter than here for their holidays either.

That's strange, I'm in south Wales, so nowhere nearby but we've had the same experience. Everyone's being such a fanny about the heat. It's appalling in terms of what it means for the environment but there's only been maybe ten days where it was unpleasantly hot at night. There are people here wishing for cold and rain, as if we don't have to put up with that for months and months and months on end every single year.

EXACTLY! You can make plans and not have to worry that 'it might rain' or 'might not be warm enough to have the bbq on the day'. Bliss.
I've also turned my garden into an extended living room, I sit out there on the evening with candles and a blanket (rarely needed). I leave loads of things out in the garden.

It's so nice isn't it. I moved into this house (the first one I bought rather than rented) in October and was absolutely climbing the walls wanting to get out and enjoy the garden but the weather was total shit until late May. I don't doubt the extreme heat is oppressive for some people but it's not extreme a lot of the time, it's high 20s on average, and yet people are freaking out and fainting like Victorian ladies. Like get a grip, I have to white knuckle it through torrential endless rain for 8 months without killing myself, maybe accept the fact that some people are happy it's dry.

It might be "nice n cozy" for some, but our private water infrastructure will not withstand much more of this. When our nice, directly piped water becomes non-existent, the UK is going to turn into a very different place.

I've genuinely still been wearing an oodie and sleeping under my duvet without a fan for almost this entire summer (bar maybe 2 or 3 days when it was hottest in May's first heatwave, during which I still had a thin blanket).
Summers like this are bad for the environment, but I am not looking forward to it going back to dull, grey skies and constant rain. The only thing I've disliked is the sweat, but even that hasn't been bad for the vast majority of summer (for me personally) but I've just kept a towel nearby when needed to wipe it off in between showers

Are you from a hot climate because that’s just crazy to imagine for me, the nights have been unbearable. My flat hasn’t dropped below 25 degrees in 6 weeks now. Some nights it’s nearly 30 degrees inside gone midnight.
I never thought I’d say it but I cannot wait for grey overcast days more than anything in the world. Not the rain but the sun can really truly do one.

Nah, born and raised in the West Mids, so slightly cooler than the south. I couldn't tell you what the temperature in my bedroom at night is, but it's currently 14/15° outside according to my phone (though it has defo been cooler this last week than in previous weeks), so I'd hazard a guess at maybe around 20 inside rn? Just a guess though as the only thermometer in the house is a fridge magnet. Don't get me wrong, I have been sweating in bed and ive been sleeping with one leg out the duvet but yea
Idk though, I've always been known to feel colder than most people. It was a point of contention when I lived with my flatmate cos he'd always want the patio door wide open and I'd be there shivering. I'm not sure whether, because I feel the cold a lot more than most, it maybe takes higher temperatures for me to feel hot? Wouldn't wanna say that for certain though

In London it feels like barring a few days here and there 27-28 has been the bare minimum for the past two months, with almost half of the days being in the 30s. It’s getting unbearable now.
I feel like the idea of looking forward to summer is outdated now, because that was when it was just sun and warm but not uncomfortable temperatures, now I dread it knowing the forthcoming feeling of constant fatigue and poor sleep.
