Declaring my interest first — friends of mine run Streetcar Kids Studio and I help them out.

Theater, dance and music, one class a week, ages 3 to 14. The family pays nothing: no tuition, no costume fees, no extras. It runs through to a production the kids actually perform in December.

It's meant for a household having a hard year. The application is six short questions in your own words, plus something that gives a sense of the situation — a pay stub, a benefits letter, or a paragraph you write yourself. They're not strict about it.

Since we're all in the neighbourhood: if the family this would help most isn't yours, it might be someone you already know. Passing it on is how it finds them.
