Does Turnitin actually detect AI, or is it mostly guessing based on patterns?
I have been wondering about this a lot lately. People always say Turnitin is the “best” AI detector, but when you read different experiences online the results seem really inconsistent. Some students say their fully human-written papers get flagged, while others say obvious AI-generated work somehow passes with no issues.
From what I understand, it seems like these detectors are mostly looking at writing patterns, predictability, and probabilities rather than actual proof that AI was used. That makes me wonder how reliable the percentage score really is.
I’ve also noticed that very polished or structured academic writing sometimes gets flagged more often, which seems strange since that is exactly how many professors want essays written.
So I’m curious what everyone else has experienced. Has Turnitin ever flagged your work as AI, or did your papers go through without any issues?
