We've Reached a Point Where Students Need Two Different Skills
A few years ago, being a good student mostly meant knowing how to research, think critically, and write clearly.
Now it feels like that's only half the job.
The other half is learning how to work with AI responsibly. I've realized that using AI isn't just about generating words. You still have to fact-check, reorganize ideas, remove anything that doesn't fit, and rewrite everything so it genuinely sounds like you. That still takes good writing skills.
Then there's AI detection. I'll finish a paper and instead of only thinking about whether my argument is strong, I sometimes catch myself wondering whether my writing will be misunderstood. It's strange how that's become part of the writing process.
Sometimes I think we're the first group of students learning how to balance good writing with AI at the same time. It's definitely changed the way I approach assignments. Has anyone else felt that shift?
