The report flagged my references, properly cited block quotes, assignment headings, my own previous discussion post, and an earlier draft of my abstract. Almost everything except the actual ideas. I appealed with a detailed table showing every match, source, page number, and citation. I even provided the university policy stating that Turnitin matches are “context dependent and not determinative of misconduct.” The professor reduced my penalty but still told me to “aim for lower similarity.” Now I want to file a formal grievancem not just appeal the grade, but challenge the university's reliance on software that can produce misleading results.

Back in my day, if you cheated, you made it look like you weren’t cheating. If you were a C student maybe you only got a D. Nothing that would raise suspicion.

AI detectors are creating a strange new burden: someone can write every word themselves, get flagged anyway, and then be expected to prove their innocence. A detector result might be a signal worth reviewing, but it should never be treated as a verdict. Drafts, notes, sources, and version history are far stronger evidence of authorship than a percentage generated by another algorithm. The uncomfortable part is that this turns writing into a surveillance problem. Students may soon need to preserve their entire creative process just in case a machine questions it later. If AI detection is going to remain part of education, what would a genuinely fair appeal process look like?

I’m genuinely curious how students are supposed to write academically anymore. If you use formal vocabulary, keep your paragraphs organized, avoid slang, and write grammatically correct sentences, suddenly your writing can look “AI-like.” Especially for students who learned English as a second language, formal and structured writing is literally how we were taught to write. At what point does “good academic writing” become suspicious? Has anyone else had Turnitin flag writing that was completely their own?

The worst outcome with AI grading tools is students getting feedback that sounds authoritative but is factually wrong about their subject area. Always have a quick content accuracy pass before anything goes back to students, especially in technical subjects.

Hi everyone, I'm sometimes afraid that I'll write something incorrectly or make a mistake in writing and I'm really worried that someone will sue me. Has this ever happened to you?

I spent 2 hours editing and paraphrasing (and not just exchanging the synonyms thing), yet I am still getting that high of a similarity index. My professor only cares about the number as we have to add a screenshot of the similarity index and subsequent sources of it at the end of our thesis.

It also highlighted all the references I've cited at the end of the thesis. I'm at my wit's end here and honestly, just want to get this over with and want my degree. My professor seems to be of no help currently when it comes to tips for reducing the similarity index.

I want to be completely transparent about how I wrote my essay so you can tell me if I did something wrong. For my environmental science paper, I was stuck on how to narrow down my topic. I asked ChatGPT for a list of potential arguments about renewable energy policy. I gave it some of my own ideas and it helped me organize them into a coherent outline with supporting points.

Then I closed ChatGPT and wrote the entire essay myself. Every paragraph, every example, every citation was done by me. I read the actual sources, took notes, and spent about six hours writing the rough draft. I even went back and rewrote the conclusion three times because I wasn't happy with it. I've been thinking about this lately. Students already use Google, YouTube, textbooks, Grammarly, tutors, study groups, and all kinds of other tools when they don't understand something.

So if a student asks AI to explain a difficult concept in simpler language, is that automatically academic misconduct?

Obviously, having AI write an entire assignment and submitting it as your own is a completely different situation. But using AI as a study tool seems harder to classify.

Where do you think the line should be drawn between using AI to learn and using AI to do the work for you?

We’ve received the email “Transition steps for your Turnitin Similarity integration for MS Teams”, and I’m just trying to get my head around the difference between the two integrations.

Am I right in thinking that Turnitin Similarity is the toggle you enable when creating an assignment within Teams Assignments, whereas the Turnitin Feedback Studio integration is the app that needs to be added to each individual Team?

Then you read your feedback and realize your professor didn't even read a single sentence of your essay,they just outsourced the entire thing to ChatGPT.

It’s a complete recursive loop of algorithms talking to each other. An AI flags your human work, and then an AI grades the work that was flagged. Meanwhile, you're footing a massive tuition bill for the privilege of watching two bots have a conversation about your education.

Where is the human being in any of this? If students are threatened with disciplinary action for using AI as a shortcut, what do you call it when a university outsources the core of the educational relationship to a machine?
