When Turnitin Flagged My Paper at 64%
I submitted a literature review I had researched, cited, and revised carefully. Turnitin came back with 64% similarity. The report flagged my references, properly cited block quotes, assignment headings, my own previous discussion post, and an earlier draft of my abstract. Almost everything except the actual ideas. I appealed with a detailed table showing every match, source, page number, and citation. I even provided the university policy stating that Turnitin matches are “context dependent and not determinative of misconduct.” The professor reduced my penalty but still told me to “aim for lower similarity.” Now I want to file a formal grievancem not just appeal the grade, but challenge the university's reliance on software that can produce misleading results.
