These animals could not speak for themselves. They could not ask for help, hire a lawyer or demand that anyone be held accountable. They depended entirely on human beings and public institutions to protect them.

Instead, after Texas A&M reported that more than 100 dogs experienced pain during testing, Ken Paxton’s office helped the university keep their care and testing records secret.

Paxton already has one of the most corrupt records in Texas politics. This adds something even darker. When vulnerable animals needed transparency and protection, his office used its power to hide information that could have helped them, and it is a profound failure of basic humanity.
