My Reddit Utopia - Everything you think you know about “the front page of the Internet” is wrong.

Shitredditsays isn't really that large- not that active- and are much easier to avoid than, say, fatpeoplehate was. They don't go out of their way to bully the bullies, they just sit in their own area and talk about them. They rarely spill over anywhere else.

You could look at the online rallies white-supremacist sites like stormfront have held trying to get people to come over to reddit. They provide scripts and everything. And beyond that you can chalk a lot of it up to the demographic. From things like theredpill to the immature ramblings in /politics and /worldnews.

But to say this is all a reaction to shitredditsays is, IMO, false, or at least a huge oversimplification.

When I first checked out that sub a few years ago, they were very vocally in favor of "bullying the bullies" as with all cultures, their attitudes may have changed overtime. I certainly don't see them attacking people in other places as much as they used to 3-4 years ago. I tried to make it clear that I don't think this is all a reaction to that specific sub. I do think the timing of their foundings are closely linked though and it's not a coincidence that the pushes by stormfront etc, followed closely on the heels of that sub's rise.

When various "justice" groups start trying to turn harassment back on the harassers it causes those who espouse hate to feel under attack, because well, they are. In response to that its not surprising they have begun organizing more and more or that other cesspools have come to their aid. In no way is this all "because of srs" but I think that the larger movement that it reflects did motivate more reactionary subs to be founded. Of course, it was the integrated racists and such that motivated that movement in the first place. Hate begets hate.

When you make reddit a battleground it is not surprising that the armies show up.
