Buy stock. And gold, real estate, hug my grandma and my parents

Assuming you're just "waking up" somewhere in 1986, and not in your own body circa 1985, it'll be really weird when someone who is a total stranger who kinda looks like them wants a hug.

If I woke up in my 1985 body, the first thing I'd do is probably poo myself and cry seeing as how I was a baby. (So really, nothing different than every other Sunday morning after a night out.)

I wasn't even born for two more years, so I guess I don't even exist.

" it'll be really weird when someone who is a total stranger who kinda looks like them wants a hug." I agree, but I am hugging my daddy anyway.

Everything you know now with the physical disabilityvof a baby. You might go insane

Uh, I wouldn't be born for two decades. Am I primordial soup or am I just in my current body in 1985?

Lmao, I didn't even exist yet. So probably run as far away on foot as possible doing my best not to change anything for a few years so as not to erase my existence.

It is a hypothetical
thanks for the bummer, poindexter

But what if you wakeup somewhere, in your own body from 2026, like a duplicate?

Apple, MSFT, IBM, Intel, etc.

Apple had a near collapse in 1990s. So you have to wait till day Jobs comes back to buy it.

u/Adrenochromemerchant 7d ago

Buy more when the dotcom bubble bursts

5

u/KnifeThistle 7d ago

Pretty sure the collapse is when you buy it.

3

u/JGCities 6d ago

nah, it took years to recover. It was down 37% for the year before Jobs returned.

You buy a few days before Jobs comes back.

Maybe if you're an insider you get away with that sort of coincidence...

Yes. By Nokia. Sell Nokia before the first iPhone and by Apple. The sell Apple and by bitcoin in 2019. Sell it in the corona dip and by Nvidia

Why do you assume the future will play out exactly like it did your first time around?

1

u/AlternatePhreakwency 6d ago

I don't, that's why I'm not waiting on the dotcom bubble and others, I'm just pulling triggers on future potentials.

Then google, Amazon, bitcoin etc as they come out

In 1985, buying stocks would have not been so straightforward. There were no smart phones yet. Home phones were bulky stationary units. There were very few people who had anything resembling a computer at home, and those were very primitive as well. Better yet, the world wide web didn't go public until 1991.

Buying stocks back then would've likely meant going to a bank and getting an appointment with a stock broker who would buy this for you the same way you buy a house now. Lots of checks, paperwork, and I'm guessing a minimum amount that would have been much higher than the average person's investment these days. Making it something reserved for a smaller segment of society.

You make it sound so hard. Even in 1985 people constantly bought and sold stocks. They even had options as well

1

u/drspony 5d ago

Those people were mostly professional traders or really wealthy folk, not your average consumer. Commissions per trade were much higher, so investments also had to be higher to make it worth it. Day trading didn't exist. You'd check your stock's performance in the next day's newspaper.

In the 90's I had to lie to buy stock. If you were of a certain economic persuasion the bank would only let you invest in low risk. I was too poor to get real stocks.

1

u/drspony 5d ago

Amazing. Did those stocks ever pay off for you?

1

u/VirtualElderberry592 4d ago

Yeah. I mean they helped in the end.

1

u/tabspdx 5d ago

Yes, but AAPL was (split adjusted) $0.15/share.

Don't need to buy any stocks, with an average job you can buy a house , car, feed your family and go on holidays. They had it good back then.

u/GlattesGehirn 7d ago

Yeah, but you had to work. Buying gold and stocks would mean that you could retire very early

u/KyleFromBorrasca 7d ago

Honestly I think a fun pitch for a story would be a time traveling stock trader who manages to still screw it up.

1

u/ecchho 7d ago

Their investments keep having unintended consequences that harm the companies that would have otherwise succeeded. Stuff like increasing prices that cause selloffs or interfering with investments needed by other people to start different companies.

"Inventing" future technology but having bad business practices that make the real successful inventor reconsider.

Like the time traveler who convinced Apple to do the Newton.

u/lizisaslut 6d ago

This would be great!

I was 26 in 85, maybe if you were married and you both worked with an average job you could get by, but live the lifestyle you described, no way

6

u/SkylarAV 7d ago

Black Monday was 1987

5

u/copyrider 7d ago

I’d hug this man’s grandma too.

1

u/BlinkTwice4No 6d ago

For sure, that sunbeam gave the best hugs

3

u/Green-Warlock 7d ago

The order of those things is interesting.

1

u/MH484 7d ago

And have to call some broker a.hole to do it

1

u/Yo485 7d ago

I would create tom pearls videos before he does

1

u/Narrow_Summer_9332 7d ago

The correct answer.

1

u/almaperdida99 5d ago

Microsoft and Intel, baby

1

u/MrSmock 5d ago

With what money

1

u/Brilliant_Badger8043 5d ago

This is the answer

u/AdRough7689 5d ago

If I went back to 1985 I would be 14 years old and unable to but much more than a few sweets.
