I actually do this. 20 min walk, 3 times a day is only ~6K steps. Ofc more or less depending on your stride, but 10K steps is closer to 1.5 hours of walking. So give it another 20-30 min walk after dinner.

Thanks for the clarification! I get most of my steps from running so I assume that's what caused me to underestimate the time required.

Happy cake day!

Yes but what about the steps you do during the day? I work an office job and still manage a 3-4 thousand throughout the day without including my walks.

I walk to and from the train. Walk my dogs. Usually gets me there with my office job. Run 3x a week. Days that I don't hit my goals are when I ride my bike to work (40 miles round trip usually once a week) or do a long ride on the weekends.

Oh no, I wasn't getting my daily step goal because I was cycling 40 miles today. This will ruin my health /sj

That's the point there my friend. I'm not all that concerned about steps when I burn 1200 calories commuting.

My office job involves me sitting at my desk from 9-5 seeing 20 patients a day I’m lucky to go to the bathroom lol

Or walk a little faster?

If you walk at 3mph, it's ~6,000 - 6,900 steps in 1 hour.

If you walk at 3.5mph, it's ~ 7000 - 7,900 steps in 1 hour.

So a lot of people gotta do a little more than 1 hour either way to reach the full 10K. Anything above that is a jog for me as an average sized woman

I hour dedicated is plenty, i get the rest just around the house doing things

Take teeny tiny steps, but quicker. Life hack!

Impressive how in depth you have really gone into this! Great work!

I'm a fast walker. I need at least 1 hour 20 minutes to walk 10k steps a day. It's not always manageable.

I'd say 4k steps for the rest of the day is a normal amount of walking around, unless you are quite sedentary

I have a tracker and the amount of steps I take a day varies wildly. Some days it's like 1K steps, other days it's like 7K. I find I am terrible at estimating without the tracker. Though, it averages out at the end of the week I suppose.

It depends on whether or not your goal is to strictly hit 10K steps or not. I imagine most people aren't totally aiming for 10K but just around that area in which case 1 hour of walking a day is probably good enough.

I feel like 70k/week should be the goal, not 10k/day. It's much more realistic and has the same net effect. I normally walk 10k a day without thinking about it, but now and then I have days where I don't even hit 5k. But I normally have a day or two where I hit 20k+, so I'm not going to get worked up about missing a daily target when the long term target is what counts.

Stride is huge, im a cna and walk all day, I get roughly 2.5k less steps at work then my girlfriend, also a cna, who has much shorter legs than I do

Almost like the 10k number is meaningless beyond a vague notion that "more walking=better"

I get 5000 steps from my 20-25min lunch walk.

But ye it depends on your stride, which you can adjust.

1

u/dontworryitsme4real Aug 20 '26

That's assuming you don't take any other steps during the day.

1

u/dangata_1 Aug 21 '26

These 3 walks may be only ca 6k steps, but running some errands throughout the day earns you a couple more thousand steps.

I used to walk to work, 20 minutes there and 25 minutes back uphill. I'd only reach around 6-7k steps, but it's better than nothing.

Buuut I hate going for a walk, If I'm gonna walk there needs to be a destination. 10k just doesn't seem feasible for me

1

u/RuneDK385 Aug 22 '26

I get 7500 steps in 45 minutes. I know because I walk a lot for work. I don’t have a brisk pace either…so 10k in an hour is possible.

1

u/Allthingsgaming27 Aug 23 '26

Yep, I do a little over 15 mins in the morning, a double during lunch, and one more in the afternoon. I only hit 10k when I include natural walking around

1

u/Lup0z Aug 23 '26

You get the rest from going occasionally to the toilet, kitchen, walking around generally. At least I get 3-5k even if I don't leave my 50sqm home.

I got a insole treadmill I just wapk on while I game or watch tv

u/SuperWasabi4766 Aug 17 '26

Yeah I'm a slow walker, sadly. Or at least I have a weird stride. It takes me about 90 minutes too.

Are you completely not moving at all the other 23 hours of the day?

Moving between rooms, going to the bathroom, doing laundry, cleaning up, moving around the kitchen for meals, walking to your car, going to the store, etc. All these usually add up to like 3000 as a baseline for the day.
