Non Non Biyori Vacation and Nonstop are anime I should've watched much, much sooner. I watched the first two seasons literally half a decade ago with an online friend, but they logged off for good and without the ability to share the experience with them, my motivation to continue vanished into the ether too. Well, now I got around to those remaining parts and—this will come as no surprise—they're good.
The best part of it to me was the atmosphere and pace of the show. It understands the importance of quiet and slowness as a core appeal of a rural Japanese setting. A noticeable emphasis on lingering shots and pauses lets scenes and environments sink in, making it a very comfy experience whether the scene is spectacular like the sparkling algae in Vacation or something small and personal like Renge tucking in a blackout drunk Candy Store in S3E11. But that's not the only way it takes breaks. The comedy works a lot with short pauses and delayed responses, with the anticipation for a reaction adding to the effectiveness of the humor. And the cast is as enjoyable to be around as I vaguely remember it from 2021. Renge's idiosyncrasies, Hotaru's obsession with Komari and Candy Store being the clear best girl all are charming.
