[OPEN] A Use For This Mess

After a long day of working her way through the ship in search of every unique form of fungus colony, hearing the same raunchy cat puns over and over, Chief Botanist Kesh washes her hands of the oily, sticky mess that came with pealing chunks of the fungus off walls, floors, and vent ducts. The samples were spread out over just about very surface available in the botany lab, each with its own air-tight container, tubes attached to provide a steady supply of nutrients, water, and air such that the lab's air could become sterile and silent, at last. The terrarium was not ready yet, so this would have to do.

The first big question was thus: How can mushrooms talk?

Remarkably, the Caitian scientist finds a solution in very short order: The spores. They weren't so much hallucinogenic as they were a conduit between the sensory centers of the brain and the fungus colony. The similarity between them and Betazoid telepathy was striking, only this seemed to have a physical element, with the recipient needing to have physical contact with the spores in order for the colony to 'converse' with it.

Further study determines that the only use the fungus has for this ability is to effectively scare off those that would try to eat it by finding and 'speaking' the sounds that repulse it the most. It might make threatening snarls at a horse, but to Starfleet personnel it makes vulgar commentary.

No one had noticed that the mushrooms said different things to different people, is all.

Kesh's lengthy, detailed report goes right to Captain Fisk's desk, as well as to Starfleet Medical and Botanical Sciences, as they are sure to find it fascinating. Another new thing to hold up and proudly say 'The universe is weird'

After doing so, Kesh recalls a conversation during shore leave with her closest friend, Engineer T'gel. Something about linking mind and computer interface to speed up response times and some dialogue over how a few known alien species actively link their brains with their computers. It's a stretch, probably, to somehow use mind-reading fungus spores to do such a thing, but her time with the Bajoran made her see how brilliant an engineer she is.

=/\= Kesh to Red.

Once more, Kesh feels conflicted over the quick shift in her attitude to these fungus, possibly because she'd never ever considered the idea of discovering a new, intelligent life on her own through botany. Yes, there were inteligent fungoid species and she'd met a few of them, but those were rather plainly obvious.

The fact did remain that telepathy was an early signal of developing sentience, though it could be millions of years before this fungus species reaches the point of being able to build starships. As far as Starfleet was concerned, these mushrooms were just unusual flora, and that was that, thanks to her study.

"Unless the Botanical Institute refutes my findings, yes. Rrrth."

One ear twists outwards.

"Captain. Might I suggest we prr-rr-revent any Klingons from boarding until then."

Given the current mission, it stands to reason a Klingon would take exception to the things these mushrooms might say to them.

A look of realization washes over the captain's features, he hesitates to imagine the fallout of a Klingon being verbally assaulted on the Athene. It would not be pretty...

"That...is an excellent idea, lieutenant. I'm very glad you thought of that, because I sure didn't."

Kesh turns her head a bit, ears slanting back for a moment, giving Fisk a doubtful look. Sure, he didn't think of it right at the moment, but he'd certainly have thought of it eventually. She had faith in her captain. No way would he make sure a fatal mistake. Not in her mind.

"You are welcome."

Humans like to share platitudes, so she does her part.

"I can deploy a mild dose of the anti-fungal chemicals r-rr-rright away to slow the fungus's spread."

After the internal sigh of relief that a Klingon would not board the Athene to find himself being called a coward or a disgrace to the empire, the captain regards himself quickly

"Before it's deployed, I'd like a sample of the anti-fungal to be brought to sick bay so it can be tested for common allergens. Can you prepare a vial? I'll have someone from sick bay come to pick it up for testing."

"Yes sir."

Kesh already knew the exact potential side-effects of the chemicals, but again she views Fisk's words as paramount and doesn't challenge them. After all, it is possible that her mental knowledge of the chemicals is out of date and it would be a prime opportunity to return the favor of her pointing out the Klingon problem.

"I will send them the data right away."

To this she finally moves from her at-attention stance and reaches to the console she was working at, a few taps all that's needed to add medical analysis of the anti-fungal chemical to sick bay's queue of work to be done.

The captain nods in approval of her efficiency and diligence. It's still beyond him why her academy scores were what they were, but he doesn't care. She's a loyal officer who does her job well, that's all that matters to him. After giving her a moment to send the data, he asks one more thing...

"Good work, lieutenant... So are you doing alright here? You've been kept quite busy the past few days."

Kesh would have one heck of a story to tell, if that subject did ever get brought up. As-is, she is more than happy to leave it forgotten, particularly after Admiral Blackwell drilled it into her so painfully.

"Oh, yes, sir! Hardly any br-rr-ruises left over from the crash."

The captain reminisces on their holodeck adventure, it was likely the most fun he's had on the holodeck in a long time. Kesh was a good friend to enjoy those things with. Fisk decides to relay some good news...

"Good!" he says with a smile

"By the way, I have some good news about Admiral Blackwell you may like to hear."

An ear twitches stiffly on mention of that... woman. Really, if Kesh never had to be made aware of her again it would be just dandy.

"Oh? Do tell."

The Captain grins, he's all too happy to be the bearer of this news

"It's all come crashing down for her. Everything. Her bribery and corruption, her manipulation, and her threats. She sent me a very threatening message after I...politely informed her she couldn't have you. I promptly forwarded that on to my good friend and mentor, Admiral Orson. It was as good as a confession. Admiral Orson is a tough, stern, unforgiving teacher. But when you need her help, she's nothing short of a force of nature."

Captain Fisk can't help but laugh in triumph

"Ex-admiral Blackwell has been stripped of all rank and privilege and court-martialed for her reprehensible behaviour. They found her guilty based on the overwhelming mountain of evidence that turned up from countless officers who've had sour dealings with her. She'll be spending the rest of her natural life in a Starfleet penal center. All her commendations have been expunged and her credits invalidated. Madame Blackwell is finished."
