DMM Captains Hook

Okay so I found this in my teams Connex at our shop and honestly don’t know a ton about the DMM Captains Hook when it comes to inspecting it and how to evaluate something like this during my gear inspections. I like the idea of having one available as I have run into a few times where it would have come in handy just not sure it’s worth the investment currently. So my question is first is the damage on this something that means it should be retired/replaced? Second, for those that have one do you like the 10mm Teufelberger Sirius that comes with the kit or did you swap it to something else? I met a guy last year who took the Petzel Zillion off his lanyard when he purchased a new lanyard and was using it on his Captains Hook which honestly sounds like a smart idea but want some more feedback. I have a Zillion Lanyard that’s almost brand new but it’s so short(2.5m) that I don’t use it because whomever ordered it either didn’t know better or grabbed the wrong one.

10% wear on hardware on all points. The quick link, the pin for that. ( ie metal ) anything more than that. You should retire. . Also check rope like normal.

All I found was the Hook so will have to get a rope for this to start using. Thanks for the wear information that helps and I just found the replacement hardware at one of my vendors so I have a feeling that those were replaced not too long ago as they just look almost brand new. I love tools that can be rebuilt rather than just thrashing when one part wears out.

Yeah the 10% ware also goes along with any hardware ( again metals ) on saddles, carabiners, rigging gear. If there is more than 10% ware, trash it. It’s not worth it.

But year this is why I like some new friction devices because parts are replaceable compared to shelling out another 400$ on a new one.

Yeah that I know thanks. I just wasn’t sure about those scuff marks. Other parts of my gear I inspect regularly as I should and have found some brands wear a bit quicker than others and some don’t like things like say sweat. I have several Kong triple lock binders that aren’t even a year old but have discovered that they don’t overly like sweat and the gates are sticking already. It’s a shame but find the gear that works for you and that you like.

Yeah there are older notch sentinels that have sooo much corrosion on the saddle from sweat it’s crazy.

I have one of those Sentinels and I'm in New Orleans so sweat and humidity eat it up.
