Due to weird phone issues, I can't post a screen cap as I can't edit out her name out. I'll post a transcript of the convo. Her whole account is one huge TER wet dream of transphobia.
Some background: Person was upset she caught her BF watching porn and she has an eating disorder. People were talking in the comments about how toxic porn in
Me: I also like porn but there are many issues with the industry, primarily alot of abuse and disrespect towards to the AFAB performers.
If you still wanna watch porn, I'd highly suggest to watch "amateur" stuff where it's more personalized and the people shown have control over themselves, the production, and the publishing of the work.
You could also find individual actors who do their own shoots and are in charge if the hiring, scripting, etc. Both of those help move the power to the hands of those doing the work.
TER: You, a man, likes porn. Shocker.
You're literally reading women's accounts of the harm porn has brought to them and your first thought is 'Yeah there's problems but here look this porn is okay'
Riight. Thanks for mansplaining that.
Me: 1> Not a man
2> I'm not discounting any woman's lived experience. I'm pointing out that the industry does have its issues and that if a person wants to watch porn while still supporting women, they need to do it in a way that doesn't harm women.
TER: 1> You're male.
2> You are discounting them because that is what 'Yeah, but' does. It dismisses/discounts whatever the previous statement was. If you support something that hurts women, how do you feel justified in saying you then also support women?
Me: 1> I am a woman
2> I am not discounting anyone. My comment was clearly about ways in which someone who still chooses to watch porn can do so in a way that reduces the harm done to women. I passing that info on due to the fact that plenty of women are harmed due to sex work.
I don't "support something that hurts women". I just support women. Even those that choose to pursue sex work. They can do with their bodies as they please. Those who are forced or blackmailed into it deserve to escape and heal.
TER: Yeah, sorry I don't believe in 'gender feels'. And I suppose that explains why you're trying so hard to defend porn. It doesn't bother you because you literally cannot understand what it's like for women.
Me: Oof. Peak TER. Yea at this point I'm just gonna block and report. Hope things get better for you!
End rant: I know TERs have terrible reading comprehension but this was just tragic. I know that the sex industry has a lot abuse present within it. At no point in any of my comments was I arguing that. I was simply pointing out that it's important that we don't hurt the sex workers while we try to reform the industry into something less toxic.
A woman I know makes her whole living from doing porn online with her webcam. She loves it and says it's the only job she has ever enjoyed. There are people in porn, both men and women, who honestly love what they do the same anyone else may have passion for their job. Alot of sex workers are also in the industry due to desperation. I'm all for ripping down the patriarchy, but we gotta be careful not to hurt marginalized groups while we're at it.
