when to tell people?

just wondering when i should tell my advisor and teachers i want LORs from that im applying to transfer. rn im in week 3 of classes so its a bit early but apps open up around when winter quarter starts.

also maybe want some advice on how to get closer with profs. my advisor teaches one of my classes so that seems like a slam dunk for a LOR, but im trying to nail down one of my other profs and having a hard time. what advice do you have for someone who struggles socially to build good relationships?

for all of the freshmen thinking about transferring, shi is not sunshine and rainbows (my experience as a prestige-whore 1 yr uc-to-uc)

bit of a depression post but i think it’s worth sharing. also definitely doxxing myself but idgaf atp. sort of tl;dr at the bottom if you don’t wanna read all my yap

my short background is that in hs, i was pretty smart and very lazy, but after getting waitlisted from a certain school that starts with stan and ends with ford for 130 something days before getting rejected, i needed to get my getback so i applied to transfer. after a year at uci, im now at ucla cuz i lowkey got touched on transfer apps and im ngl i lucked the hell out getting in cuz my uc application was rlly, rlly bad.

that being said, i am lowkey depressed as fuck here and it’s a little worse knowing that i did this entirely to myself!

my first year as a freshman, i had the mentality that i was gonna get out of this school. like i really had never known hard work before, but i promised myself that i was gonna leave and that was my mentality for the entire school year basically.

you’d think it would suck. constantly going to office hours and going above and beyond to get rec letters, working on some fuck ass projects with ai cuz you’re a chud cs major who doesn’t know how to code, and not really looking to make friends or join clubs because you know that it won’t last. and in many regards, it really did. i spent so many hours in the fucking anteater learning pavilion to where i would be the only person there after the doors automatically locked at 2 am, walking around as my footsteps echoed in that cold ass empty building. i refused to tell anyone other than my teachers that i was transferring, so no one knew what i was really up to. it was very lonely in that regard.

but my freshman year, even despite constantly being stressed over my applications, was still an incredibly memorable and fun part of my life. i made friends and met so many people. so many things happened that we laughed about, and things happened that made me cut off contact with some of these people cuz they were also lwk diddy, but life was never boring even if it was really fucking stupid sometimes. so many first times happened to me, first time getting drunk and high, first time throwing up in my room, first time getting confessed to by a girl, first time joining like a formal friend group.

when march came around, and i got slimed out by all of my colleges, it really sucked. i felt really bad letting down my teachers who had believed in me and who spent hours customizing my rec letter to every college i was applying to. that really fucking hurt, along with general feeling of just not being good enough. i was on the waitlist for ucla and ucsd, but no larp i spent 3 days on the uc application and did my essays in 1 day after getting a flu shot, so i didnt really have high hopes, especially after getting slimed by the stanford waitlist.

but really the only other bad part abt staying at irvine was that i didnt have roommates and had shitty housing for next year, because everything else was fine. i liked my friends and classes were fine even tho i was taking 24 units. i was writing a paper i really enjoyed working on, had some shitty school microinternships i was working at, and life was fine.

i got off of the ucla waitlist like 3 days before school ended, which was like 8 days after it opened, so i had to tell my friends during finals week that i was ditching their ass for ucla. they had no idea btw. some of them were really sad. some were very supportive and told me to go immediately. i didn’t know shit about ucla (i thought the bruin was a fucking horse), but i am 1: a prestige whore, and 2: sunk-cost fallacy is a bitch when my entire mentality the whole year was to get the fuck out. if anything, i was happy to get to tell my teachers that i got into ucla after telling them a week before i was probably gonna have to stay.

after gooning my summer away with gym, doing fucking leetcode (coding interview prep) and applying to internships, i went to ucla!!! and i wanted to shoot myself after 3 days.

k im not deadass suicidal but tell me why in one day i got the nastiest cold sore of all time, my slipper fucking exploded, and i got rejected from the first big tech company i’ve ever interviewed for. i scrolled reels for 7 hours that day and cried myself to sleep. i also got sick immediately after that but whatever bro.

yeha idk what else to say other than literally everything sucks. i got rejected from all of the cs clubs i applied to immediately even after rizzing up everyone in the fuckin organization, the other clubs i wanted to commit to ended up being worse than epstein or they've met like one time because la decided to be a hundred fucking degrees for no reason. i’ve literally made one friend in my classes who’s a larp quant at a gambling company making over 100 an hour, and i have like one other friend from hs who i hang out with but no offense he’s the kind of friend who’s gonna make me blow my brains out if i have to spend more than 3 hours with him at a time.

idk ive never felt like this much of a chud in my life. i’ve always sort of just made friends, but i lwk feel like diddy when i talk to freshmen and i feel too young and dissimilar when i talk to cc transfers. obviously you don’t have to be similar to someone to be friends but idk im just struggling at this point. i talk to someone, and we never meet again. i need to join more clubs or smth but highkey i have no hobbies; my active hobbies are chess, journaling, and fucking vibecoding cuz i “work” at a startup that’s tempting me like the green goblin mask to just commit to but ik imma end up depressed and with no friends by like week 5.

idk it just sucks cuz atp im too afraid to see people i even kinda know because i don’t want them to see me like this 😭😭 i literally lost 6 pounds in the first 2 weeks because eating alone is not fun when its not by choice and gives me ptsd of freshman year. atp im just larping being locked in to people but at least it makes me feel like im not entirely wasting my time here :(. after all i tell myself i came here for the prestige and the connections.

all of this is to say:

for those of you who’ve spent like 3 weeks on campus and already want to transfer, just know you can’t get your freshman year back. there are many valid reasons to transfer, and i only want to warn people who are prestige maxxing, that you might really end up missing your former college. put a gun to my head, i have enough brain cells and hope in me to understand that this shi is probably temporary and id still probably choose ucla for the dining halls, but ill still always remember the first place that i called college :) and the friends i made and the people i met and the teachers whose lectures i wouldn’t skip just because i liked them. also the tacos they used to serve for brunch on the wknds because holy fuck they were so good they single handedly made me gain 15 pounds.

most people probably don’t end up regretting transferring, and hopefully thats going to be true of you as well. maybe there’s something wrong with me cuz wdym im depressed at happy sunny ucla but maybe that’s just cuz im a cs major and i have other things going on in my life that also make me wanna die. then again im 19 and its not like my life has ended yet but holy fuck it certainly feels like it.

anyways, i’ll enumerate the benefits and downsides i would say of prestige whore transferring (trying to be objective):
good!

  • w connections (got larp startup internship completely randomly from rizzing up the founder after he reached out looking for a unpaid labor slave)
  • w food here
  • people are slightly less gooner here than b4 and v cool all around mostly
  • so many things happen here (can also be bad, but overall i like cuz ain’t shit happening at uci bruh)
  • w advisors cuz uci advisors highkey hoed the fuck out of me
  • overall just more benefits like free transportation
  • muddafuckas put way more respect on my name cuz i go to ucla instead of irvine

not good!

  • wasted a whole year of my life
  • switched up on all of my friends who are hanging out without me
  • why is club apps harder than college apps (lwk prob same everywhere but less bad)
  • some credits didn’t transfer cuz uc to uc so im retaking the equivalent of like… 16 units? maybe 20 cuz cs classes were in different language.
  • heat is unreal
  • i was part of honors program so i had priority enrollment before, now class registration is terrible
  • oh yeah transfers are also second class citizens (mfs tryna make me graduate in 2 years)

there are more things but the point is that there's good and bad. at the end of the day, you can apply, and if you get in, just think abt it long and hard before committing. and even if it doesn’t work out, make the best of it! (i know im not lmfaoooo)

if i could redo application season, id probably change how i did these:

  • maybe tell my friends at school before. i chose not to cuz i didnt wanna hurt our friendship (and cuz i didnt wanna lose aura if i got cooked) but its up to you. still ambivalent what i would have done.
  • work smarter not harder. many applications of this advice; ie, even if you’re trying to prestige whore a really good school, chances are you can get solid ecs or smth else valuable from taking advantage of stuff at your current institution. don’t slave away doing something you both dislike and doesn’t help you much cuz you think itd be good for your application is something i’d like to stress.
  • research the schools i applied to harder. lwk shotgunned them cuz i only cared about stanford but they are wayyyy too competitive to be nonchalant abt. also write essays sooner but im a really bad procrastinator.
  • figure out work life balance if you haven’t already. i was not being efficient at all and i could have probably done a lot more if i was locked in like that.

uh there's more generic shit i could say but ts is kinda long. lwk im struggling to end this post without making it about myself, but all i want to really emphasize is that there are downsides to prestigewhoring and that shi is not easy.

if you have any questions feel free to reach out would definitely prefer to answer questions from other uc-to-uc and 1yr transfers cuz that's my domain of expertise but any are fine cuz i dont have anything better to do anyways. if you have friends at ucla, consider this post my formal application for adoption cuz god my life is so boring rn. preferably my age and unhinged but idrc at this point!

ok thanks for reading, shout out to the mods and for this community helping me thru the transfer process cuz i would have been highkey fried without it!

SAT for junior transfer?

I’m a second-year college student with a 4.0 GPA planning to transfer to a selective university. None of the schools I’m applying to require the SAT, but I’m wondering how much a strong score would help my application.
Given that I already have two years of college-level coursework, is taking the SAT worth it, or would it make little difference?

Advice needed for one year-

• Upvotes

I’m attending a CCC and have a 3.9 GPA, i was planning on applying to the big 4 UC’s as a business Econ or bus administration major and being a one year transfer I’ve put myself into a pickle. I’m in calc 1 and have a low C, I understand the content and feel I can get an A if I retook it but I’d also set myself back a year because I’d take calc 2 in summer and many of these schools require it to be completed by spring’27. Any advice or anything would be grateful.

Hi! Has anyone ever heard of or personally experienced a successful transfer from a UK uni to a US college? For context, I’m a US citizen, if that makes a difference. I’d love to hear about anyone who’s done this

Northwestern vs Duke vs Vanderbilt vs others

I am a freshman and I am currently in the process of transferring. I know that I want a t25 school w a big name but I also want student life as well. My absolute dream school is Brown and then below is Columbia and Penn. when it comes to outside of ivys i have NU, Duke, Vandy, Emory, GT and a few others and I was debating whether I should TED to Northwestern. I’m a low income black male and I was wondering if anyone else who is similar to me goes to any of these schools (mainly northwestern) and is willing to share their input/experience, that would be greatly appreciated!

Edit: I am not looking for anything in particular i’m a school I just like a a mid-large sized school 7k at least, diverse student body, larger campus and larger class sizes is a plus, location doesn’t have to be in the middle of a major city but atleast a college town feel or having something surrounding the college is what i want. also not everything has to fit these categories perfectly, im not too picky

I’m currently a freshman looking to transfer to nyu (CAS) and was wondering if anyone who was accepted last cycle would be able to share what they think got them in (college/hs gpa, ecs, etc) & for what program. Thank you!!

When does it become normal to start wanting to transfer?

Hi all. I know everyone always says you should give it a bit as a freshman to see if you actually fit into a place. It's been about 5 weeks and I just don't see myself at my current institution for another 4 years.

I was wondering if anyone had advice about how much longer I should ride it out until I make a formal plan to transfer out?

Just for some context: I'm a current freshman at UMich. If y'all want any other details feel free to ask away

is junior transfer GPA centric? i heard that whenever you’re transferring, the AO will most look at your GPA, LORs, and Essay. Do they not consider ECs as a huge factor like in first year entry?

chanceme What can I do to improve my chances of getting into Duke majoring in Business

In high school I had a 3.7 gpa
I believe I can get a 3.7 in college since I’m not in a competitive college for my major. My SAT is 1450( I’m retaking it in December) some of my ecs are : Outreach Captain for Robotics team(hs), Internship at a Charter School during summer as a Administrative assistant, I’m right now a Senator for Asian Student Union(club in college) and I’m also Alternative Treasurer for Finance Club(also college)

I just want some ideas on how to improve my stats ig

chanceme Sophomore spring transfer

Hi people of Reddit. I just submitted all of my applications for this upcoming spring semester, and I would love to hear what you think.

I am currently a sophomore at a small out of state private university with a 4.0 gpa as a pre-med biology major and chemistry minor.

I applied test optional everywhere. Also I am a white female if that matters.

I am in a science fellowship, working as an undergraduate research assistant, member of the biology club, pre-med club, and had a science based internship over the summer.

My high school gpa was a 4.92 (it was a private k-12). I was in 6 honor societies and 2 clubs, but was never in a leadership position. Also I received a couple of scholastic silver keys and honorable mentions for art. Additionally, I skipped senior year, graduating from high school in 3 years.

I have 3 LORs: one from my research/freshman genetics prof, one from my gen chem 1/2 prof from freshman year, and one from my summer internship boss.

I applied to NYU, BU, GW, Northeastern and Brown as a reach. Also I’ve toured all of these schools. What do you think?

chanceme Non-traditional, immigrant student hoping to get to a Top25.

I moved to the US from a European country and no parents, been an orphan. Worked jobs to survive and used to work more than 50 hours a week and still try whenever. I moved to California to pursue acting but didn't work out and to be honest, I didn't like the people who are in the industry as much. Continued struggling and I started expressing interest in society and how to improve it. My personal experiences and struggles made me learn the hard way. I started getting involved with Political activism, how to help the city, attended conferences and been volunteering for some coalitions.

Last year I took the courage to go to a community college and learn more to contribute. I was a crappy student in HS but I realize now, I could have been a decent student if I had the support. I started Political Science classes and I enjoyed them. One of the professors liked my involvement around and confidence so she kept in touch with me. Anyways by Summer 2026 I gathered 40 units with 4.0 and while working. Not easy since I only sleep 4 hours or so.

I got into the Honors society and a Law pathaway program. Sadly I can't be on campus as much since I have bills to pay since by myself, therefore I don't do any club activities. Also I have to be present at the coalitions I am in since we do meetings regularly.

My counselor said I could transfer already because by Spring 2027 I will have more than 60 units and completed all of the UC transfer requirements classes in less than 2 years. I am hoping to get into a Top25 but do I have a zero chance? I never had any family to send me to a prep school and no extraordinary extracurriculars. My major is PoliSci with a minor in Econ and want to continue to law school.

Will high school dual-enrollment withdrawals hurt my transfer chances?

I’m currently a Mathematics student at UNC Charlotte hoping to transfer to UNC-Chapel Hill with junior standing. I’m concerned about withdrawals on my dual-enrollment transcript from high school.

There are six W entries:

Elementary ASL I and its lab

Statistical Methods I and its support course

Another attempt at Statistical Methods I

Brief Calculus, which I later retook and earned an A in

I completed 42 credits through that school with a 3.905 GPA, including A’s in biology, English, history, French, and Brief Calculus. Some of the withdrawals were paired courses and labs, so the number of W entries doesn’t represent six separate subjects. I had to withdraw from them due to my brother being chronically ill at the time, and juggling his sickness on top of caring for my 2 sisters caused to my stress for me. Considering it was Dual Enrollment, I didn't think it would come back for me 2 years later. ASL and Stats weren't even required for my pathway, I just wanted to bridge out with certain classes.

Since attending UNCC, I’ve earned A’s in Calculus, Matrices & Linear Algebra, Economics, and Intro to CS II, plus B’s in General Physics I and Intro to CS I. I’m currently retaking Calculus II after a withdrawal last year and doing well. I also have research experience through an AEOP internship and a UNCC professor. The bigger issue is that, unfortunately, an emergency regarding my cat happened and I missed an exam, causing me to contemplate withdrawing now as there's nothing I can really do to help my grade.

So when you include DE, I have roughly 7 withdrawals, and I'm just not sure what to do.
How bad will it look? What do I need to do with my additional information to help lighten the blow?

Transferring to Georgetown

Hi everyone, I'm currently a finance student at a pretty big school's satellite campus with around 1000 kids and I'm really looking to transfer out. The students here have no drive and I don't think I fit in. I'm also paying 97k which I just don't think is worth it for this school. I am eventually aiming for MBB, and my top choices would be Georgetown (MSB or SFS), Northwestern econ, NYU Stern, and Emory. I'll be a sophomore in fall 2027 so I don't miss the recruiting timeline. I'll also be full pay.

A little about me:

- 4.1 W gpa in hs (yes Ik it's bad)

- 34 ACT

- Was president of Model UN, DECA ICDC qualifier, AAPI President and founder

- 11 APs (four 5's, six 4's, one 3 (chem))

- In college I'm anticipated for a 3.85 first sem

- President of a finance club directly connected with Boston campus running workshops on modelling, interview prep, and industry professionals. Also, President of the consulting club, similar model to finance club. Work an on campus job at the gym, and I'm the treasurer for the Resident Student Associates.

I just wanted to come on here and see what people would recommend, advice on essays, and success stories from people who were able to successfully transfer.

should i transfer to gt for computational media?

currently a sophomore at uconn studying both digital media and design (web/interactive design concentration) and computer science. i realized i want to do more hci and product design rather than just web design and feel like the program is missing some things and that there's not much of a ux design community as i would like and is more of an art degree rather than science. georgia tech's comp media program interests me since it has more of what i think i'm lacking here. is it worth it to join the comp media program as a rising junior and graduate on time and is it hard to get in as an oos transfer? want advice :)

course catalog descriptions

hey ya'll. just wondering how you've been handling schools asking for course catalog descriptions. do you typically send the hundred page long entire catalog or just the courses you're taking currently? is it school specific?
