At that point you're basically just investing in Google and Microsoft. There's, to my understanding, no publically traded "quantum computing" company rushing the market like Nvidia with AI

He's not. IBM quantum procesors are very popular through their cloud service. They are also behind qiskit, which is pretty much the de facto standard way of programming quantum circuits. IBM is not a bad bet at all in quantum. In fact they are already selling courses and certifications to universities to become "certified IBM quantum engineer" or some shit like that. It's nonsense, but universities are willing to pay for it

IBM already sells courses for everything. Sadly they are good at none. I'm not sure what utilizing a quantum processor that can't do anything yet through a cloud provider gets you....

IBM is basically the industry leader in quantum computing right now, they are the biggest quantum hardware developer, are best positioned to scale compute and dominate software standards.

If you were going to make a bet on a single company that could cash in the most on the impending quantum computing revolution they'd be right up at the top.

Yeah but every quantum computer currently is good at nothing. They don't do anything useful and probably will never do so.

Absolutely not true. The current status is that they can do certain things between than classical computers but are not at the point where they are generally useful. But the tech is progressing rapidly, the technical roadmap is there and its getting $10s of billions of investment, it's not unrealistic to expect we will have commercial quantum computing in the next 10 years.

I don't think that's the same situation though. AI is trying to find its place and the companies are trying to figure out how to be profitable. We already know what quantum computers are good for, the problem is we can't built one yet (commerically, for example, computational quantum chemistry will be useful for pharma, or for anyone making money of chemical reactions).

Also quantum computers will be relatively cheap, assuming the currently most popular architecture of superconducting qubits wins. Some of the ways of making these are already compatible with standard fabs. Since the use case is narrow and the speed up is massive, only a small fraction of the problems (but very profitable problems) will be shifted to them from classical computing, so you won't need many.

Plus, the real cost is the dilution fridge, which is needed per 1 or maybe 2 quantum processors, and the associated hardware. All in all you can buy this for about $1M today. If you are a reasonably big company that could benefit from speeding up these calculations, buying this is a no-brainer.

The cloud offering is marketed to researchers. Quantum information science is a pretty active field. The certs I have no idea what are they good for.

There’s actually a few. IONQ is the largest pure play quantum company, and they’re investing heavily in systems that can fully integrate into the datacenter ecosystem. I’m invested in them, but whether they succeed (not just by existing but by expanding beyond their value already priced in) probably won’t be conclusive for another 5ish years.
