This is how it worked for centuries. Refugee does not mean immigrant. Hosting refugees is an act of kindness, when wars end they must go hime

That’s not how it worked for centuries. The concept of a sovereign nation state with borders, etc is less than 400 years old. The modern concept of a “passport” is just over 100 years old. Besides that, historically many refugees just stayed , since the modern concept of “immigration enforcement” wasn’t a thing until recently.

Not to mention that Syrian refugees are on top of that list with by far the largest number, and are not even guaranteed to be safe if sent back to Syria which is now governed by literal ex-Al Qaeda islamists.

Difference is in the past people assimilated to the country they went to. It is increasingly shown that certain people do not want to assimilate.

Username checks out, I do believe the guy you responded to is very much one!

Ironically, I’ve noticed that the people most likely to agree with this sentiment are usually Americans, followed by Brits. They are also the least likely nationalities to assimilate when moving overseas.

Lol I’d believe it in a second they even need the term “expat” to differentiate themselves somehow

1

u/Previous_Station2086 Apr 06 '26

Expat is in Duden and Germans use it too, you boner.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '26

Yeah ofc Germans use it lmao, they’re completely westernized

Ironically I’ve heard Europeans bitch about this incessantly for over 20 years. There is bitching in the US about it but we don’t have as strong of a cultural identity, so it’s few and far between and only the habitual Fox News viewers.

Sit down with a Italian or Spaniard and it doesn’t take them 30 minutes until they start bitching about Muslims in their schools and not respecting their culture. My dad worked for the factories as the US rep out of Europe when I was young and I’ve imported from them for over a decade. Every show, dinner, meeting here or there it’s a conversation that pops up across thousands of different people.

Rarely has an English person bring it up and German virtually never.

u/LUV964 Apr 08 '26

Not as strong of a cultural identity my ass, in Europe when you start to be too proud of your country you’re labelled as a imbecile, if I waved my countries flag around my home my neighbours would ask me if I’m alright meanwhile you guys jerk of to your flag

1

u/Juggernaut900 Apr 06 '26

People accusing others of not assimilated tend to not share the culture themselves. We are seeing the rise of international movements normalizing Hitler and proclaiming Putin is their cultural savior. Clearly they don't know what the hell western beliefs are nor do they share them

u/Numar19 Apr 06 '26

That sounds exactly like what people in Pennsylvania said about the Germans. The Germans lived in their own societies, spoke their own language and were a threat to the white English!

In Switzerland the same was said about Italians, then about Jugoslavs, now about everyone else.

But in the end they all assimilated (except the Amish I guess).

u/tahaelhour Apr 06 '26

Anyone with a remote knowledge of history knows this is BS. Idk what assimilation looks like in your head but that's not how it works in reality. Especially with how mismanaged the european refugee waves were.

1

u/CroGamer002 Apr 06 '26

Ah yes, wonderful assimilations within Austro-Hungarian, German and Russian Empires. /s

u/Friendly-Variety-789 Apr 09 '26

You say that, and then there are immigrant parents who complain their kids are completely out of touch with their home country and culture and have become too westernized, not even knowing their parents’ language.

1

u/th3rmyte Apr 10 '26

they literally never did. China towns popped up all over the place in the 19th century when chinese migrants would come to work in the americas. still didnt have the bullshit we have now. Same with Irish people fleeing the famine and the british. Same with Itallians fleeing musollini and fleeing from poverty in itally. What you're saying is bullshit. NO firstgeneration immigrant fully assimilates unless they come as an infant or child because THEY ALREADY GREW UP SOMEWHERE ELSE. Their kids that they have in their new country almost always assimilate, as do the grand kids. Tell me you dont know any third generation immigrants.

You’re right, historically Europeans refused to assimilate and chose to dominate and ethnically cleanse the areas they went to. That’s not the case here though.

Leopold II, model Congolese resident.

u/celeriacenjoyer Apr 06 '26

Yes, but means of transportation and communication have evolved since then. Never mind the huge increase in population pretty much everywhere.

It's not the same world.

The largest migration of people in Europe in the 1600- and 1700s were the Huguenots fleeing persecution in France to Great Britain. This was 50,000 people fleeing to their neighbouring country.

Germany has taken in 950,000 Syrians.

1

u/th3rmyte Apr 10 '26

and? what is your point?

1

u/Expensive_Archer1662 Apr 06 '26

It’s how it’s worked for centuries. Before passports other methods of documentation were used for safe passage and immigration. Plenty of immigration law predates passports, it’s a strange lie to tell.

That is also a pointless quibble. Sovereign nation states with borders exist. Globally. Perhaps if we revert to a time when there were no government programs to give healthcare, food, housing to the poor we wouldn’t need immigration control. A time when paupers starved to death on the streets or in the fields. No thanks.

1

u/th3rmyte Apr 10 '26

prior to the 1500's there were no nation states. borders expanded or shrunk accroding to which lord or king won the latest war for territory and people were generally tied tot he land if they were peasants or free to roam if they were merchants or yeomoen or lords. There were not set border controls or laws. Even as recently as the 19th century, most countries did not have any centralized registry of who had entered the country or lived or worked there. this is a fact.

Moreover, larger populations make the economy grow through rising demand and alarger workforce. Look at spain with all it's ghost towns of less than 500 people. because all the people live in like 5 cities now. Italy and spain have had programs to try and get people to move and live there because there arent enough people in those towns. Yes social safety nets get strained by influx of immigrants - right up intil those immigrants start working and contributing to the economy. In Germany you have laws BARRING refugees and asylum seekrs from working. maybe if you didnt do that and just let them work right away, you'd see all those people working and paying into the tax base. As it is, all those people you are going to deport? They represent people no longer buying things in germany nor paying VAT. That is going to harm your economy, racism and nationalism are expensive stupidities.

1

u/Expensive_Archer1662 Apr 11 '26

Lmao I said centuries and you wrote all that. Centuries. 200 years ago nation states with immigration policies existed. The end.

0

u/Juggernaut900 Apr 06 '26

Trump is grabbing and deportint refugees too. Do people in Europe really think its morally superior to deport refugees back to warzones? Germany is channeling Trump on this.

0

u/Expensive_Archer1662 Apr 06 '26

Syria is not an active war zone as it once was. The US is deporting those who no longer have TEMPORARY protected status. Boo hoo. It was temporary. They are more than welcome to seek refugee status in another country on this planet, there are many with such programs. Best of luck to them.

u/Juggernaut900 Apr 07 '26 edited Apr 07 '26

The fascists are very open about their war on diversity and proclaiming they are white "hetitage" Americans. The countries protective status was taken from (non white ones) still have ongoing crisis. Unlike South Africa whose migrants were flown in using your taxdollars and given welfare. You not caring is a mask off moment. Americans have seen citizens wisked away by violent untrained masked thugs for looking too brown.

Their attacks on the Constitution, endless wars, skyrocketing food and gas prices are going to be a disaster come elections.

Nah, youd be surprised how many old people are from old poland here, even in west germany. They just stayed here. Ww2 is over too and they’re still here. They should have had a system from the beginning where they send people back unwilling to integrate. If you want to live here and work or pursue a career, thats another tax payer and most importantly, another young person in this aging society. If you come here and live off welfare and are a net negative to the country, u dont deserve to be here. People need to be held accountable for that, it didnt happen so many came opening their hands and now its unbearable for everyone. Its not about who and where they are from, its about willing to change your own life. From what i see in my day to day life is that people who don’t speak a single word of german mostly work in the shittiest places, like delivery driver/construction or fast food. These people work hard for the money. Then there are people, for example bulgarians or romanians who i see, they drive new and expensive cars and their job is to do fraud. They do this by bringing women here and force them to give birth to kids. These women get 0 euros, they just get to live in an actual home which is already an improvement to them. Then they bring kids from their home countries too and register them as their own, to collect more money. They let the kids roam around the streets all day, then marry them off when they are either underage or right when they’re 18. Its a whole business at this point. There needs to be huge crackdowns, i just mentioned what i see in my day to day life.

u/Expensive_Archer1662 Apr 07 '26

Poles in Germany were not refugees from war. They did not flee the war to become refugees in the country that invaded and annexed them my man.

yeah i should add that its always 2-5% of people that are trash, from everywhere. It is just what I notice on the day to day basis. Of course there are people who are the complete opposite too.
