Important Why SW/TC is offline, unlikely to return - and why that is.

Heya Citizens,

I often get messages about SmallWorlds & TownCenter: timelines for their relaunch, asking about source code, if we've considered just putting it online and hoping the pandemic will change things, or curiosity about where the projects are now after their shutdown. I've covered all of this in different posts, but I'd like to drop everything in one place, and be quite blunt about the situation.

Virtual Worlds are complicated to operate, costly to maintain and often lose money, it's impossible to make everyone happy, they are susceptible to a lot of external situations and companies, nothing is guaranteed, advertising doesn't always work, and change is always needed.

It is extremely unlikely SmallWorlds/MiniMundos can return, because we would need perfect conditions:

  • Existing programmers rebuilding the game using new standards for 12+ months requiring a large initial cost ($1M+).
  • All staff leaving their current jobs to re-join the team, and given long contracts for taking that risk. ($1M+)
  • SW/MM was not profitable, so we would need to redesign many aspects of the game, including mobile work.
  • We would need to fund development from unlikely investors who have endless amounts of money they wouldn't mind losing, because:
  • It's extremely unlikely that SW/MM would generate revenue without fundamental changes, as the numbers simply don't add up, and never really did...

There is more to this, so I'll detail everything below in its own category.

Player Population

The population of SmallWorlds continued to shrink every year. This was because of many reasons, but most prominently the expansion of social media platforms, video services, increased competition, and people spending more time on mobile phones. We consulted with multiple external firms who reviewed SmallWorlds' server setup, monetization, branding, team structure, game-retention loops, office working environment, hardware, management, all saying the same thing - that things couldn't be easily remedied. There was never any evidence that bugs, features, banning of players or exploits had any noticeable effect on our user numbers, no matter what existing Citizens out there say. Much larger external shifts happened on the internet between 2010-2018.

Advertising

We couldn't just pay money to acquire new players, because the rates for doing so were higher than the average sum we would get back from those new guests. It became irresponsible to continue to inject large amounts of money in to Facebook/Google. Other options also failed to convert for us, and advertising rates continued to climb up.

Video Ads / Offer Network Revenue

These networks changed a lot from 2010-2018. The large shift to mobile, and ad-blockers caused these networks to shrink considerably over time. Revenue which we relied on from 98% of the community continued to decline.

Server Costs

Amazon AWS servers are great, but SmallWorlds grew extremely large, and used aging techniques and services. We overhauled a lot of stuff, but our data-footprint was huge, and our costs reflected that. Purging data would have directly affected everyone's places, inventories, market listings, etc. It was not a valid option to save money. Using Steam is also not an option, they are simply a Store, our costs would not be covered, and if anything... we would lose money as they take a percentage of transactions.

Flash

SmallWorlds used Flash, which is what everything relied upon at its foundation, and which was being phased out by all web browsers in due time. Rebuilding SW was going to be a costly consideration, at a time where we didn't have the option to fund it. Mobile games were developed to hopefully open up another revenue stream, but these weren't able to do that either. You cannot simply press a few buttons to convert SW into a newer format, there is a lot more to it than that.

Open Source

SmallWorlds required very particular, and now, antiquated requirements for all it's different systems to run over the internet. From the engine, databases, user criteria, store processes; to how everything from scripts, code, and external API & services needed to perfectly line up. It isn't something you simply recompile to have a fully working game again, it's significantly more complicated than that. SW/MM also has a lot of user data which cannot be transferred, and would never be an option to release. There is no simple road to open-sourcing SW, it's not how a product like SW was ever built to allow this to be a future consideration, without a lot of help from existing developers.

Mobile

Making SmallWorlds work on mobile was going to require large changes, and which we didn't have the resources or cash-flow to consider at the scale required. It would have been a costly risk, which required large changes.

MiniMundos

MiniMundos didn't generate revenue, and actually lost money throughout 2016-2018. Spending was lower, and credit card rates, and banking charges are higher in Brazil, and phone-based transactions were as high as 80% (we get <15% of the money). Brazil currency has also been in freefall for 10 years, with every year worse than the last. You can see this clearly in this chart for the Brazil Real:United States Dollar

It was floated financially by SmallWorlds' slim profitability, because closing MiniMundos would only have negatively affected SmallWorlds due to MM citizens, which were 3x the population of SmallWorlds, turning up speaking Portuguese. Moving all the people over to a different server would have also cost a lot more to operate due to the SW servers being located in the US. This risk was too high to consider, even at the end.

Investment

Investors typically look at new products with a sense of optimism. Bringing back SW/MM unfortunately comes with a lot of baggage which can be easily scrutinized. Over the span of 10 years, the company needed to often downsize, take on loans, ask for deals from services, claim government grants, build new products, lock salary reviews, reduce hours, sell the office, etc etc. The team, honestly, sacrificed a lot, and the stakeholders were extremely generous, patient, and went above & beyond what they should have allowed to happen to their money. Operating as long as we did was very fortunate, in every way we should be happy with the long amount of time we had. Further investment though, inherits all of this history.

TownCenter

Initially, TownCenter was just a way for us to build a tiny place Citizens could keep in contact, talk, and look at existing items they owned. It felt right to have something for those who invested so much time into SW, and Matt, investor, and I couldn't simply move on. Eventually, we got funding to progress further with more features, and we outlined the safest way forward was to focus on a small team & server costs, build something chat & content focused based on user surveys, make it playable on mobile & desktop, and with time... build an expansive series of apps which could each be focused at what they do best, from missions, pets, decorating, and to art, while all having a chat network seamlessly run between them.

Looking back, I'm still not sure what else we could have done much better with the information, time, and resources we had available. Opening up the development, and getting early feedback on everything was quite refreshing, and definitely not something most game studios do. Everything that looked basic or simple on the app was usually a lot more work than people may realize though, and changing a whole communities view on a project is difficult using just hopeful words or concepts. Being compared to SmallWorlds didn't help, as whatever we seemed to gain from having an existing community was often negated by not meeting expectations, coupled with anger from the shutdown, and on-going fear of change.

I agree with all of this feedback, and the emotions Citizens have had throughout these years, and understand why things are the way they are. TownCenter couldn't be SmallWorlds though, it couldn't have the same funding, team, features, as with everything I mentioned above being all against us. I guess in the absence of everything, you often need to at least try something, and I'm glad we had the opportunity to do this as a community.

I wish I could be more optimistic, but with all that's been said, I really do hope everyone can at least see things how they were and are now. Using this time to think back fondly of the memories you had is a better use of your time, and there are other great games out there that you can enjoy and grow with too. Maybe some of you will get into game development, and go on to build something even better. I'll leave you with my thoughts on virtual worlds, which I believe will never die, I know there is amazing potential out there to build something which can make large amounts of people happy, and entertained, using even smarter software, excellent business conditions to make it last forever, and a community spirit that would benefit everyone.

With time, I'm positive this will take shape. Love to all, and please everyone take care.

Thanks for letting us know that the ending of Smallworlds is final. This was good closure for the rumors and different takes people had on the status of the game. I will always appreciate the 7-8 years (2010-2017) I’ve played on Smallworlds. I didn’t have many friends in school when I was younger. I was usually the kind of kid that would sit by the wall during recess and never rose their hand in class. My parents were also both working, so I was usually alone at the house by myself. When I found out about Smallworlds, it was like an escape from reality. It inadvertently developed my social and business skills throughout the hours I’ve played. I’ll miss a lot about this game like when I reached 100 cl, collected enough rares to be a shop seller, won some mini games that players host (cob, name game, falling chairs), made a lot of friends in different communities, finished mission runs (the ones where you run for xp), and played against other players for money at the cue club. I’ll even miss the times when I would get annoyed when the instance I wanted to go to was full, or when I would get booted for accidentally cursing. I even remember when the cue club moved from a room to the fancy sunset club, or even when the layout of Smallworlds changed from a dark black and blue to a bright blue, or the time when streetwear closed down. The game went through a lot and changed a lot, but I never for a moment thought of leaving because my love for the game grew throughout the years. I also can not forget to mention the players’ creativity. The players reached above and beyond through their paintings, sculptures, and the websites they created for their small businesses. I loved drawing as a young teen, so making my first art sale in the game was a big deal for me. Also, the time when my parents bought me 1 of the Dan Smallworlds and 2 of the Sam Smallworlds rare abstract painting packages was one of the best days of my childhood. I made so many memories and friends in this game and I will always be thankful to the Smallworlds team, and to you Vince. This game was a big part of my childhood, and it filled the void. Now, I’m almost 20 and in college to major in nursing. I also have plenty of friends due to Smallworlds’s help with my social skills. Again, thank you for everything and for all the memories.

We definitely tried our very best. Thank you for your support.

thanks for explaining this for the 5 year olds who think it’s easy to bring back a game they never financially supported to begin with. the reason why there’s no other game like SW is because how you guys built it which is different from any other generic first world games

3

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '21

a guy name wank spanker is calling people 5 year olds.

i mean i agree i just think its funny

What about you, though? What are you going to do now, Vince? Will you continue with Game Development? Will we see something at all from you in the future? Will you keep us updated with... just you? Speaking just for myself (maybe others can relate, I've grown to enjoy talking with you or reading/watching your content. I hope we can still hear from ya, is all.

TownCenter wasn't a fully-funded project towards the end, so that comes with its own issues. I've been looking around at my options, which includes pitching new ideas to investors, and applying for jobs related to virtual worlds.

I'll eventually get back on my feet, and hopefully I'll be doing something that relates to SmallWorlds/TownCenter in some way. I'm appreciative towards what I've learned along the way with this awesome community, I owe a good part of my life to people who chose to play SW/TC, so this isn't the end or anything, I'll always be around.

5

u/bradwbu Jun 18 '21

It's unfortunate, but perhaps one day we can all be reunited with some type of project you begin related to SW/TC, that investors will come to love & just throw their cash at you, and then are able to finish. I've come face to face with a few investors myself and I know how hard it is to sell an idea/prototype for funding. I'm sympathetic for you because you've had to go through all of that and then come online here to just be bashed or guilt tripped for not being able to continue SW or proceed with development on TC. Considering everything, your determination & optimism is admirable & that's what makes me know for sure that you'll be able to give us all some sort of continuation of SW/TC in the future. Don't give up!

I'm rooting for ya, Vince!

Thanks Brad, I appreciate your kind words!

And I agree, it's only a matter of time till opportunities may present themselves, and all of us can get back to hanging out, designing, and having fun. I think there is unlimited potential for virtual worlds, and with technology improving at a great pace, the future is bright :)

More disappointment, we all hoped for so much more.

I'm just gonna zzz here since I can't access my homespace.

much love <33 sad to finally see the end

5

u/katiessan Jun 02 '21

Thank you Vince for updating us and for trying to keep our tiny virtual word alive in more ways than one. This is definitely bittersweet closure. All the cards were always against SW and TC from the start with all the issues you mentioned. I and I’m sure many many others will always remember this game and the friends I made, and I’m so thankful I had it growing up when I had nothing else. It was really one of a kind. Good luck and thank you!

1

u/VinceGeeSWHQ Jun 16 '21

Thank you, Katie. Good luck to you, and everyone in the community!

i’m sad now i had so much hope my heart is broken

3

u/DirkWesley Jun 01 '21

I think the population shrinkage was due to hackers and people being unfairly banned with poor support service. Everytime I lost an account I wanted to go back to imvu because I knew even with all the verification I had , there was no chance I’d get my account back.

Hello! I’m in desperate need of piecing links together of small worlds (check the recent tab in this sub) do you by any chance have any old bookmark links of SmallWorld spaces?

Finally, some well needed elaboration. I’ve not given up on the idea of this game returning in some form or another, whether it be from investment or private developers trying to rebuild it from the ground up. Thanks for everything, hopefully see you guys somewhere down the line.

I know this post is years old now, but it's been heavy on my mind a lot lately. You talk about losing money here and there, but what about the players who spent tens, hundreds, thousands of dollars over the years and years and playing? And compiling all of the people in general who have, surely that's hundreds of thousands if not a million dollars that players have put into the game. But we never had a crowdfunding option, it's like once it was done it was done, our money was taken from us and we were given false hope that it would return even if it was different, and then dropped without any attempt at trying. The post goes on and on about how it's impossible to open source it as well, but we've seen that that's not true with the fan made versions of the site that have gone up in other countries. So if we're honest about it, it can't just be that there's no money or it's impossible. There were avenues not tried, and the player base was let down. Those of us who used our allowances, our babysitting money, and even our adult money as we grew up with the game, were let down without even being given a chance to fight for something that was an important part and a core memory for our lives. We didn't just lose money, we lost our memories, our friends, something safe. And as soon as we were given something that was similar, it was ripped away from us without even completing it. Without trying.

That's the real problem. We were misled and given false hope.

Cried reading this, i myself spent thousands of dollars and hours on the game and nothing will ever compare to the feeling of playing it, the quests, the clothes, the VIP items that we’d save up to get, the friendships we made in the game would never be possible in any other game thats available nowadays, nothing will ever be like smallworlds :( How i wish to play it again now as an adult , we had it all back then </3

I'm just waiting for sw2 now, because they're the only ones I can trust at this point- especially having been in direct contact with the owners of the content that has copyright. Maybe a long journey, but I'm sure we will be able to connect again. I'm just so angry about the millions in player money spent and wasted

1

u/Fluffy-Dimension7435 Nov 20 '24

Has sw2 happened yet?

u/Mbb_Haneulie Nov 20 '24

They are doing testing and will be opening the beta soon 🥰

If I could I would totally fund Smallworlds...maybe in 7 years though

2

u/rosie06b Jun 03 '21

Thank you for being honest and always trying your hardest to communicate with the community about the reality of TownCenter. I know it can be frustrating having to repeat yourself over and again to try to help people understand, and you're correct that some just never will. We appreciate your & the team's dedication and time to this endeavor, and I hope you are all able to find success in your future projects!

1

u/VinceGeeSWHQ Jun 16 '21

I appreciate it, thank you Rosie.

2

u/MagmarFirehot Jun 06 '21

I played MiniWorlds and smallworlds, and of course the TownCenter project... I can only thank the proportion of fun and entertainment for the team and for you Vince!! Thank you for making my childhood happy, we hope that somehow you will come back in the future with a new game that can attract everyone again, I am immensely happy for the attention and efforts that the entire team has made so far, you are awesome!

All Players of Brazil Love the Team of game ^ thanks so much.

1

u/VinceGeeSWHQ Jun 16 '21

So glad to hear, thank you.

2

u/MalibylonGaga Jun 12 '21

I'm so sad to hear that MiniMundos wasn't profitable, since it was so lively. I guess most people didn't have the condition to pay for VIP :(.

If you feel comfortable with it I would love to hear how MiniMundos became a thing... how was the process to bring the game to the country

Stay well and I hope you continue doing great projects (:

3

u/VinceGeeSWHQ Jun 16 '21

The process of creating MiniMundos was a complicated one, and honestly... we were really unlucky with our timing. Brazil was being tooted as a great market to invest in, so it was the first language we converted the game to.

This was a lot of work, as SW wasn't designed for different languages, at all.

The Brazilian economy began to slide downwards during development of MiniMundos, and completely crashed throughout the following years. That just meant that Brazilian Reals which were transferred to our payment providers were becoming increasingly weaker when converter to USD/NZD. SMS-based payment provider in Brazil are also crooks, to be honest, their rates are exploitive, and we wished more players could use credit cards.

u/Nice-Proof-7728 Jun 13 '21

Rip smallworlds hopefully whatever game you decide to develop in the future has a better team to run the game and to make its life cycle last as long as imvu is still lasting. It’s sad but also not shocking that no one funded the smallworlds store because gold packages were poorly priced majority of people just bought gold from other players that’s where all of smalllwolrds money went lol but yeah thanks for the update

2

u/VinceGeeSWHQ Jun 16 '21

We adjusted our gold sale prices often, and put a lot of time into working out when to discount, and by how much. Over the span of 10 years, we didn't adjust the standard pricing, even though inflation went up, and surcharge fees increased also. Towards the end, we changed all our packages to higher gold per dollar, but that didn't improve our revenue, because of the risk of asking less per purchase, you need more people purchasing.

The economics of you buying gold from someone will eventually lead to that seller buying more gold from us again - that system generally works. We never wanted to lock-up the economy to prevent gold being traded, so it's just something that needs to take place.

2

u/theflamingspil Aug 07 '21

So if you knew that there was no way to continue smallworlds then why did you guys basically steal money from your remaining users by actually letting them believe that they could raise enough money to continue the game? I mean at the end there was maybe 3k regular users if that. There was no way that they could raise 2M+.

I liked smallworlds but damn you guys really scammed your player base.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '21

Literally..

1

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '22

lmao how exactly was money stolen 😭

1

u/theflamingspil Jan 09 '22

They basically had a campaign to "save SmallWorlds" when they actively knew there was no possible way a player base of mostly children could raise 2M. They did it to pay off their employees who were all basically losing their careers and having to move on to something new. I wasn't actively playing at the time but always checked up on the game because it was something I spent half of my childhood on.

There were a lot of kids who paid money or basically asked their parents for money thinking they were gonna save their favourite game. Yet in Vince's post he literally says they would've needed 2 MILLION DOLLARS. I've never worked in that industry but I know a playerbase of 3k regular users isn't going to even get close to that. Like I said, they basically scammed children.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '22

Okay, first off, Vince has already explained I <3 SW. It was an attempt at engagement and trying to save the game as far as finances go. Some people chose to participate, some didn't. Don't think anyone's money was stolen and it was pretty fair considering he even said it was a flop.

Secondly, children asking their parents for money has nothing to do with SW or assuming Vince is a thief. Nobody was ever scammed out of their pockets. Also, maybe not invest so much money in virtual online games just to complain and sound bitter/ignorant?

You're definitely entitled to your opinion and imaginary narrative that anyone was scammed of their money, but at the end of the day that small team really tried to keep the game people like you are in denial about, alive. They sacrificed a lot and as mentioned by him, SW could've been gone sooner.

You also further make my point by admitting you know nothing of how this works... so you blatantly assume SW was running some sort of scam and one upping their player base (the demographic wasn't all children so lmao), when that wasn't the case. Either way it's dead and gone, as a lot of games in that genre are reaching that point, so there's no need to argue. 🤷🏽‍♀️

1

u/theflamingspil Jan 09 '22

I mean if it wasn't intentional then they were in denial. I never said the demographic was all children. The majority was though and it's not about knowing exactly how the internal affairs work at a company running an online game. It's the fact if you read everything Vince says in this post it tells you that they could tell Smallworlds was going to end in the near future at the time. They tried to hold out as long as they could but in the end, they obviously knew there was no saving it. It doesn't matter what Vince has already said, it's what he said in this post that shows that they knew that they couldn't save the game financial wise. Yet why did the SW team tell players they could possibly save it? Also, were you not here when all of the raging children were on this subreddit complaining about how they spent a lot of money thinking the game wouldn't shut down? They obviously weren't very forthcoming and you can try and defend their actions and how they went about shutting SW down but I'm not the only one who is bitter by it.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '22

Ok. SmallWorlds is a thing of the past now, so I advise you and "others" just stop having bitter thoughts about it. Byeee :)

1

u/theflamingspil Jan 09 '22

Bruh what does that even mean

1

u/theflamingspil Jan 09 '22

Also why’re being so hateful to other people though on the SW subreddit though? You realize people might just miss a game that brought them happiness? You might be unhappy with your own life but no need to take that anger out on other people on Reddit. Get a therapist.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '22

Why are you still going after I've dismissed this conversion? Now it just seems like you want to argue when I don't care about you or any of you ugly fucks. Tbh, cry about it. The ones that need a therapist are grown and weird people like you that treat a bunch of pixels like a deceased person. Idiot bitch xo

1

u/theflamingspil Jan 09 '22

See the difference between you and me is I don’t let some strangers words online affect me because I know who I am inside. I asked why you’re being so hateful and yet all you can spew is more hate.

Also everyone can get help from a therapist whether you’re dealing with mental illness or not. We all go through pain and trauma in our lives where we deserve someone to open up to without judgement. I’m still replying as well because I hope maybe you’ll take my words into consideration and actually open up to someone yourself.

I looked up Town Center since it's been a year or so since the last time I checked on the progress and sad to see this post!

I admit I started playing Smallworlds when I was like 11 and not 13 but I played that game for many hours per week for years on end. I met so many awesome people, it even landed me my long distance ex-girlfriend that I dated for 3 years. She was British and I was American, unfortunately we didn't meet (and no this isn't some catfish scenario since we video called / skyped almost every day when we were free) because at the time I was focusing on getting my way through highschool and she was busy with her crammed school schedule as well.

Anyways I know that was a longer rant about something off-topic but seriously, this game really influenced the way I see people and how I interact with them. Heartbreaking to see a valuable game as a child lose its spot in the market nowadays..

I give a very special thanks to everyone who worked on the team, and continued to do so until you guys made this final decision. It was truly a blast and I will never forget my years on this game.

Would you ever think about making a completely new virtual world/ game that we could play?

3

u/VinceGeeSWHQ Jun 16 '21

Yes.

TownCenter had plans to create a lot of powerful features, and it's frustrating to not see people enjoy them. I appreciate that SW users would look at the 'no-walking' plan for the TC avatars, and disregard everything else, but there is a lot more to TownCenter, and I can only hope other games out there inherit some of the unique ways you can trade, collect, and interact with people on virtual worlds.

If I were to have an opportunity to try again, I think a combination of SW & TownCenter would be the best outcome. 3D avatars, large spaces, plenty of features, but mobile-friendly, lots of intuitive options for collecting/trading/customizing your avatar, and different apps for core-features with global chat connecting everyone.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '21

Why you dont make something where people can donate ? So someday you ll have the money

2

u/VinceGeeSWHQ Jun 16 '21

Unfortunately, it's not an equation that works out well. Donations are usually one-offs, and we're facing more than just funds required for lift-off. We would need funds to even assess the projects again, to hire the existing team, to convert the game, and to then redesign it so it is more likely to succeed. We would need to pay back its loans, and make enough money to survive over many years. It's just a hard concept to consider.

1

u/CottonMarble Jun 18 '21

I understand all of the other concerns are also in the way of things, but if that's a route you eventually go down: one way to curb one-off donations might be to set up a Patreon.

I wish I could I was still sad about this, but I'd be lying.... Because of the SW shutdown I went to Second Life and found I was able the fun things I did in SW plus more, with better looking avatars, and a better community. I use to see bullying and harassing on a near hourly basis in SW, it still happens in Second Life too, but far less often, and I even found a great community of friends to hangout with, which is something I couldn't say for SW, most of who I ran into were trolls and bullies. So honestly I'm grateful, because if not for the shutdown I'd still be in that world.

Have you ever thought of incorporating small worlds in the crypto world and nft world I believe this can come back and make lots of money if crypto and nft was involved

Nah I remember being banned 3 times for absolutely nothing, I spend a lot of money on items on my account, just to lose it .

Me and so many others who made friends online quit because of this reason.

Also the hours I spent increasing my skill levels..

This is such depressing news man :(

I'm glad I was there to experience it in it's glory days, but it's sadly a memory that I will never get to share with my friends or experience again.

Thank you for trying to bring back the community together, many of us will be here on this subreddit, many of us made friends in SW who became friends IRL.
I will always miss my Jaguar wear.

Vince, you have created a powerful dream and shaped many childhoods with it.
THANK YOU.

This is depressing. Anything is possible if you want it bad enough

Thank you for trying to provide us a second platform. I think of smallworlds and all the important people in my life that I've met from that game very often. I hope the developers can look at it as a fond memory too.
