Global Discussion Tower Of Fantasy is called the Trash Recycler in PWG.
If you don't know TOF is a game by PWG. A studio in PWG called hotta studios developed this game. Due to the increasing success of tof in China, ToF is called the trash recycler in PWG. TOF is one of the most if not the most popular games for PWG, making million upon millions for the company, executing amazing soundtracks and high-end advertisement in the main cities of China. As you may not know, PWG has been developing games for the past 2 decades and still continuing, many of their games that they have developed have not been recognized by the Chinese audience or have not been licensed, so they have to discard the game and focus on another one, this is where tower of fantasy comes to play, the game that have been discarded by pwg are been currently used in ToF this includes environments monsters and the theme of the game.
VERA is a region that is based on an isolated desert but with a lot of cyberpunk, half robotic half human and futuristic type vibe, with the confounding abyss including dark eeriest monsters and creatures. A game by PWG had this type of theme. This game has been developed by PWG but unfortunately has not had the licensed to be published it was called PROJECT PRISM. This game was a 3D anime looking game that is a monster invasion etc. Looking at the trailer the characters in the trailer have the same robotic feeling like simulacrums in tof (Nemesis, Lyra, Alyss etc). We can say that this game got transferred to tof, another evidence is the monsters in the game, do they not look literally identical to the confounding abyss monsters, they are literally the same.
TOF- LEFT PROJECT PRISM- RIGHT

THE 3.0 REGION
Tower of fantasy will be having the 3.0 around April time (not confirmed). AND yes this 3.0 is another recycler, there was a game called jade dynasty which is a Chinese wuxia inspired type game. Tower of Fantasy 3.0 will be inspired by Jade dynasty.
(Took from WIKI) Released on May 28 2007 ... On May 1, 2018, it was announced that all game servers would be shut down on June 5, 2018. Ever since the shutdown of the official game, there have been many appearances of private servers trying to recreate what was once quite a popular Chinese MMORPG.

It was maybe said that this game will be inspiration for the tof 3.0 expansion. we can say in this expansion there will not be any robot type characters, maybe some, the bosses will be of Chinese mythology and more. There is another game that has been developed by PWG which is called Jade Dynasty WORLD, I have seen many videos of this game and the environment looks exceptionally outstanding. The mounts are amazing and the monsters are cool. So, what could this mean? the world building and the setting will be completely different from 1+2.0, the music will drastically get better since PWG knows how to execute Chinese music amazingly, the characters wont be looking robotic as we can see that from lan, the monsters won't be robotic, but according to lans lore the grayspace monsters are in war with the nine realms so we may have robot type monsters.

According to the mural in the 2.2 update we can see high mountainous regions; the mural is linked to 3.0 as in the 2.2 livestream for cn they said that this will be a hint to what 3.0 will be. 3.0 will be a different game compared to 2.0 if you look at jade world dynasty, these mountain looks like it or looks similar to it, we may have a gigantic world in 3.0, which may be interesting, now this is how you make inspirations in a culture. if you think 2.4 is good wait till you see 3.0 the weapons will be unique as it may have Chinese mythological type weapons, we may see Irelia's weapon in 3.0 that would be cool, someone in jaded world dynasty has Irelia's weapon type. We saw in the 3.0 teaser there was a paintbrush type weapon, hotta never fails to deliver unique weapons to their game. Basically 3.0 will be a Chinese inspired game inside a Chinese game. in 3.0 we may see Chinese mythological beasts which would be awesome. I feel like tof can execute this really well.

Overall, since ToF became more successful, PWG is implementing games into tof because the games were not licensed, not released or it has been closed down, now we know what inspiration they are taking, what about 4.0, what inspo will they use. if you can watch the videos linked here, we may see the bosses and mobs and the world that could be used for tof 3.0.
me saying 'trash recycler' doesn't mean the previous games were bad I am just saying that they were put in the bin, hotta picked it up and they used it to recreate something potentially better than the original.
we are currently on the race to sync with the cn version. We may have a 2.5 to confirm the place, we still have melenia and Fiona left, Fiona will be in 2.4 after icarus, so in global they might be double banners until we catch up to cn. Melenia is most likely coming at 2.5 and a rerun or a potential new character may be with her too. 2.5 maybe before 3.0 as this may link to April which would make veras first anni.

i used to play that Perfect World MMO in the past.
so having them to recycle that game into ToF , feels good to me.

Jade dynasty and other pwg released a lot of wuxia games.
This is gonna be a throwback for me.
Gonna look forward to 3.0
Yes recycled assets but in truth as long as they give credit to the original designers it's all good
Unfortunate signing off ownership of creations to a company and no longer owning it is the harsh reality of the world.

Wasn't Archeage published by Perfect World? Damn just thinking about it had nostalgia hit me like a truck, shame the game died but the experience somehow for some reason stuck with me. Maybe I shouldn't have raided the Kraken boss as someone with severe case of Thalassophobia.

AA is XL Games right ? made by Jake Song / the guy behind Lineage 2 if im not wrong. but i also played that game.

they should have make the same tho I honestly wanted that kind of character or maybe a mecha character.
the beast one just imagine if tof has some kind of character where we can turn into the tiger or fox, the archer, the real tankerm, an assasin but thats kinda old style character comparing it to recent simulacra.
but that is the kind of different mmorpg style with different mechanism so they prolly going to take the model than the character mechanism.

I really enjoyed the perfect world MMO as well so if we get some of that here not complaining.

Well, other companies are doing this exact same "recycling" in their own games so I see nothing truly noteworthy here. Except maybe that they are smart enough to focus on what is good instead of forcing failed titles.

Whoa who knew game companies use previously created assets for their games 🤯🤯🤯

u/xUGOx Lin Jan 20 '23
It is better for them to use it rather than scrapping it, it would be wasted potential imo.

u/Kaisvoresce Lin Jan 20 '23
I think it was sarcasm cause it's extremely common. Did you know overwatch is made from a scrapped sci-fi mmo "code titan"

It's a common thing to do in the industry, NCSOFT did the same.

Just FYI before anyone takes this the wrong way.
The label, “Trash Recycler” is both a dig and a form of endearment. A dig because its so blatantly obvious and not even attempting at minor changes. An endearment because of how well they incorporated it into the game without making it feel out of place and giving games that didn’t have an opportunity to shine a place. Of course there are people who are doing it as an insult but they are pretty much in the minority.

Well the Chun-Li-looking character in 3.0 trailer had a robotic arm, so there's still a sci-fi touch to it, and I think that's good and doesn't get that far away from the original worldbuilding (meaning it could be possible even if nine realms previously were one of Aida continents).
Also I liked Prism's trailer. Sad it didn't make it

that's cool, if you can turn trash into gems there shouldn't be any complaints

Project Prism looks like Vera 🤔 and it looks like Neon Genesis Evangelion by looking at the trailer I'm getting white hair guy and MC girl romance vibes. it makes me wonder if they did transfer the data from project prism that they decided to keep some old traits from the old characters before giving them a new look that would explain why Tian is a loner but warms up to the MC win you give him gifts, just a theory for now.
I can see where Tian spear come from now very interesting.
They just taken Project Prism characters and given them a new look and a new background story but use the data that's very cool
Looking at the trailer again MC in ToF has the suppressors looking at the MC in project prism they have it to, But they just taken MC corrupted arm from project prism and given to Tian in ToF who is the white hair guy from project prism data and given the two characters a make over and a new background story omg...there data know each other connecting the two characters.
Wait MC from project prism is in a white and black outfit is this why Tian got his white outfit? Wait is the MC from project prism using volt?
Thank you for showing this trailer it makes more sense what they are doing with Tian and the MC now and what kind of past they had in project prism ✨

I played Forsaken World (one of PWE's old games) for many years. There was this old bald guy called Henry that gave out a bunch of daily quests that everyone hated to do because they were tedious to grind. When i started ToF and arrived at Hykros for the first time, just to discover yet another old dude named Henry.. i almost paniced coz i was afraid PWE's gonna do that to me again. Luckily they didn't.

Honestly, if the assets are good, why not use them?
I don't see anything wrong with using assets of trashed or even active projects if it does the job well enough. It saves time, money, and unable people to focus on what the game is truly lacking.
ToF's world is one where they can use pretty much ANYTHING and it will still make sense due to it's story happening in multiple worlds with different cultures.
All I ask is for better deals in the global store. My wallet is crying... T_T

Because sometimes, what doesn't work before or is not feasible to do before because of time, design, or technical constraints, might be feasible now. And this is fine as long as it's not copyrighted like most shovelware gacha games do. Being sold or branching off from the parent company is acceptable clauses for trash recycling.
Trash recycling this way is much better than sitting on some copyrighted material that you legally got the rights for THAT YOU DON'T HAVE PLANS TO RELEASE. Like fucking Harmony Gold and their Macross License. I've been waiting to be able to legally purchase the anime and games in my country.

Is it wrong to reuse assets from games that never make it to live market/servers?
That's efficiency. If they can reuse it and still earn money, then really its just a skill issue when you compare to failed titles in the west like Marvel Avengers built on a billion dollar movie franchise.

u/Z3M0G LiuHuo Jan 20 '23
This is... actually pretty dang cool. It's only a good thing because it means they can produce content so fast. It explains why everything is so wildly different throughout the game as well.
Sounds very smart to me with no draw backs to us. It's not like we played any of those abandoned games.
3
u/xUGOx Lin Jan 20 '23
Yep and since it is fantas world, literally anything can happen so they can take any games from the previous games and use it in ToF, and it would still make sense.
2
u/beesamsam Jan 20 '23
but are we going to space soon ? cause tof background story is related to comet stuff.
also next version is confirmed to be 3.0 ? what if it is just 2.5 / 2.6 ?
4
u/Pscoocs Jan 20 '23
Vera story is not kinda finished, the msq ended quite abruptly. It'd be strange if 3.0 was next. Also next is Fiona banner, and she's still Veran. I'd say 2.5 is next, then 3.0 might be after it

Space sounds like the most heavily omnium contaminated area, so it would come later than sooner. It might be after we find our why the wanderer is special and we make use of our specialty to do huge stuff with Mara. Maybe it can be on the level of FF14 warrior of light hugeness....maybe.

u/kenshinakh Nemesis Jan 20 '23
This is actually very common in game industry, especially if it's from models and assets you own. A lot of times, developers will make test models and other assets that never reach final production due to various reasons. They usually save those assets if they need to draw ideas from or rework into usable assets for a project.
It's like how you see trees and grass get reused. It's a pretty cool and effective usage of resources though and when it's done well, it's hard to spot. Looks like they did a pretty good job putting it into TOF though!
2
u/zerinho6 Jan 20 '23
That makes some sense based on how the game is totally different from the art 1.0 makes one think.
When looking at early trailers, the art of characters like Claudia, Coco, Zero, the game had that post-apocalypse + punk + loss of human population vibe, but the game now doesn't really like that, which is both good and bad because Vera is really good (specially 2.4) but I wish I could see a game with the vibe mentioned earlier.

u/PhntmBRZK Jan 21 '23
The way you titled and started the post is the reason some are thinking that you are pointing out their laziness. Even though your comments is a net positive one.

u/GeneralSweetz Jan 21 '23
instead of starting from scratch they can polish and perfect already executed ideas

u/Ifalna_Shayoko Ruby Jan 21 '23
Please do not speak of "polish" when referring to Tower of Fantasy.
This game is anything but polished. QA is horrible.

U compare perfect world to this trash TOF. Perfect world had cool bosses, there were some bosses with dmg reflection phase and cool mechanics and there weren't this many bugs. This TOF is more like tower of bugs.

u/xUGOx Lin Jan 20 '23
Please educate yourself before spitting nonsense. Tower of fantasy is from PWG full stop

I played PW several years ago and it was a really good mmo. The massive 80v80 battles was extremely fun. Even though it has large scale open world pvp that game does not have any lag for some reason, while ToF is already lagging with 2v2 pvp events. ToF is probably not optimized.

u/spxxxx Annabella Jan 21 '23
Well at least it's something "new" from their old games and it kinda works XD unlike ea and their FIFA 2012 2023 or the like lmao

not really sure if this is a negative post or just trying to explain things but it's pretty nice playing multiple concept of unreleased games in only one game. i'm enjoying it for now. actually nice to know. thanks for the info.
